This year is shaping up to be one of the worst flu seasons in history.
Not only did the flu season begin much earlier than usual in most
states, but the strains of flu out there this year seem to be hitting
many people very hard. There are strains that even seem to be
resistant to the vacines that so many of us got.

So what to do about the flu? First of all, there are some common
sense steps we can take to avoid getting the virus in the first place.

#1. During cold and flu season increase your intake of vitamine C to
at least 3000 mg. daily.

One of the most potent sorces of natural vitamine C are rose
hips. Rose hip tea sweetened with a bit of honey is actually
quite pleasing to the taste and is very effective in helping to

fight of viruses.

#2 If you have been directly exposed to the flu virus, increase your
intake of vitamine C to 5000 mg daily for at least two weeks.
Immediately start taking an echinecia tincture or a tea. Also
begin drinking at least four cups of a licorice based tea daily.
*Note: Take echinecea for only two weeks at a time followed
by at least a two week break.

If you come down with the virus, plan to be out of commision for at
least a week. However we suggest the following steps.

#1 Follow the same steps with the echinecia and vitamin C as
if you were exposed. Increase you're dosage of echinecia
by a half.

#2 Begin taking garlic. Use fresh whole garlic cut into pill size
pieces. Take at least two cloves daily. Garlic is one of the
only things out there known to have anti-viral properties, so
as unpleasant as this may be, do it anyway.

#3 The old adage, "feed a cold, starve a fever" is not true. Make
sure you are eating plenty of healthy foods that will support
your body during this process. If nothing else eat soup. Also
drink at least 2 quarts of water. It is imparative to avoid the

dehydration that often accompanies fever and vomiting.

#4 To help releive discomfort take an herbal steam bath with
peppermint, euculiptus, and rosemary. This will help with
congestion, aches, and nausia.

#5 The following is a list of herbs that would be good for a tea.
Take any combination of these herbs and let them steep in hot
water for fifteen minutes. Sweeten with a natural local honey.

*Echinecia
*Peppermint
*Licorice
*Chamomile
*Ginger
*Rosehips
*Lavender
*Blackberry leaf

Correct me if I am wrong, but Garlic is also beneficial if you have heart

already suffering from heart problems, this is doubly beneficial, is it
not?

Thank you Lisa for this most facinating information. I have been looking
for lists of teas and such for certain things. Is there anything besides
Chamomile for sleep? I really do not like Chamomile all that much..:)

Great post. Thanks for that good info. We have read that at the onset of
cold, flu or anything nose and throat related, one should STOP all dairy.
We have done this and truly without the cream, and fats, we had alot less
phlem, therefore less post nasal drip and coughing. It seems that with
the dairy products the 'bad' feeling lingers too. We even eliminated the
2% milk we use. Just my 2 cents worth. :-) Louise

For sleep, I would go with Valerian or Scullcap...possibly Hops.

Peppermint has a quality similar to lemon in aromatherapy, more of
a stimulant, in my experience.

Take care-

According to the "Naturopathic Handbook fo Herbal Formulas", Cat's
Claw Bark is a very strong antiviral herb. I intend to find out just
how good it is. The book says it is a good immune system booster.

According to one of my herb books, peppermint is good for a stimulant
or as a sleep aid. However, I think that depends on the person taking
it. It always seems to wake me up. Spearmint is the same way as
peppermint. What I have used with some success is catnip for a sleep
aid. It has sort of a fishy smell though when turned into a tea.
However, the taste is very mild.

Louise...

I rarely use dairy products either. Once or twice a year I'll have a
craving for some milk and cookies. But any other time, my refrigerator is
bare of milk. I have noticed a dramatic improvement regarding my sinuses
since elminating so much dairy from my diet. I still have cheese on
occasion and some sour cream. But those don't occur on a daily basis.

Why not embrace it - maybe it's for a reason. Is that so very strange ..?

to knock out any cold or flu after the first sniffle, this is what I do...

slice a few tablespoons of fresh ginger, slice one whole lemon, throw it all into a pot of
water, and boil until it's reduced to one shot glass of liquid (watch it at the last
minute, you don't want that last bit to boil away & scorch your cookware!). Pour into a
cup, mix in about 2 teaspoons of honey, and drink fast.

This, with a long hot bath and a good meal, nourish and prepare the body to fight off that
bug. note; I have tried this *while* I was suffering from a bad flu and, in efforts to
make my body fight, it drove my fever up -- not fun. It's definately a great preventative
measure, though.

stay strong & healthy! :)

The following are some other suggestion for helping you relax and
sleep better.

chaperal
licorice root
peppermint
valerian
lady's-slipper
hops

Try any combo of these and see what you can come up with that works
for you.

Good Luck!

Why did no one mention catnip. It is a proven relaxant and sleep
inducer. You can even grow it as a pot herb.

Hi everybody...
Wow...a lot of great advice. The flu is running rampant in this area and
so <knocking on her desk> the family has just had a touch of it! I had
read in a magazine article that when you have a fever, instead of taking
something to get rid of it to let it run it's course....it's the bodies
*natural* was of healing itself and *burning off* the sickness.
My daughter had the sinus kind of flu whereas I had the intestinal.
Everyone told me we would be sick for weeks...maybe even a month! I
followed my usual extra C, garlic, echinachea, liquids only and decided to
let our fevers do the rest. We were both feeling much better in 3 to 4
days!
Hope this helps
