this is a story that is in a book of true KY ghost stories by the late
Paul Michael Henson.also i have checked into this myself and there are
records on the story and the subjects.i thought it would be interesting
since we were talking about the appalachains the other day.it is kind of
long but i will try to condense it.keep in mind that most of the story
was testimony from someone deemed insane.
in july 1961 2 UK students went on a break in eastern KY.as the story
goes they got lost and ran out of gas after driving through a mysterious
fog.they were walking back to where they thought they passed a gas
station when they came upon an old shack.there lived a man named Devil
Joe Callahan(the hollow's present name is traced back to this man that
really lived there in1879).there was no electric or water and the man
was dressed in clothes from the civil war era.BTW the boys names were
James Taylor & Charles Davis.anyway they befriended the man and
eventually stayed there for several weeks with him and his family.Joe
made the 2 boys tools to help him hunt with and carved their initials on
each tool.the boys went on several hunting trips with the man and never
found any evidence of modern ways.now devil joe like any other 1800's
eastern kentuckian was involed in a family feud with a family called
Deaton.and one night sitting on the porch after dinner he spotted the
deaton's lurking in the woods.and of course a gun fight broke out.here
is where the story gets good.according to Taylor when he was found by
the sheriff of the place in 1961,he and his best friend had just been
involed in a family feud and his frend had been shot and killed.the
sheriff had recognised the boys name from where the boys had been
missing for several weeks and he was taken back to lexington to under go
psychiatric evaluation.he was actually put up on murder charges but they
were dropped because they had no body or murder weapon and he was deemed
insane.about 3 weeks after the trial a group of people took metal
detectors to the alleged feud seen and they found some very interesting
artifacts.besides knowing that the Callahans & Deatons had fought a very
deadly duel here in 1879 they found a knife with the initials
J.S.T.(James Stephen Taylor??)it was analized and dated back to the 1879
era and they said it was positive that it had not been buried there
recently.the body of Davis was never recovered and Taylor eventually
died from his insanity.the courts ruled that the knife could have been
dropped in 1961 but could not explain it's aging or how it got naturally
covered over in a few weeks.
i love this story.it reads like a movie script , but like i said earlier
there are facts on record of all these accounts.also,it is rumored that
one of Taylor's family members has a photo of the boys taken with devil
joe and his family that the police found on him.it was positively
identified as joe callahan by members of the callahan family that
compared it to old photos that they had.
if you read the book you get alot more details although this is taken
from what i found in library archives.i asked them why it is slightly
different from the book.they said the book's author may have dramatized
it a bit.the book is called tragedy at devil's hollow.

I didn't get your original post, Sir Will; luckily PJ was kind enough to
quote it...

How long were the students gone? This kind of story really tweaks
something in me, don't know why, just the thought that you could fall in
a hole any minute, but it's always harder to come back...
