In West Virginia, the country backroads can be dark and lonely. On those
nights in early summer when the moon is waning and the sky is dull with fog,
it is said that the restless spirit of Mary Taylor walks among us. Mary
Taylor died in a car crash many years ago on the switchback curves of
Taylorville mountain. It was never determined what caused the accident.
Some thought that a deer or a small mountain lion or bear ran in front of
her. It was only after several days of searching the rough terrain that her
ravaged remains were found. You may scoff at what I may say next but it is
the gospel truth for I have seen it myself. Driving home from work after
working the evening shift last week, I drove through Delbarton and across
Mary Taylor Mountain (Taylorville Mountain). A young pretty woman was
hitchinghiking. She was dressed in a fresh pressed paisley print dress.
Knowing I didn"t want her walking that mountain after dark, I was happy to
give her a ride. She didn't say much, as she climbed into the back seat.
Thanking me for the ride, she sat so quietly I forgot she was back there.
The radio was playing quite loud and I was just singing along like I always
do. It takes about fiteen minutes to get over the mountain, especially on a
foggy night. At the bottom of the mountain the road forked in two
directions, one toward Matewan and the other toward Red Jacket. I turned
around to ask the young lady which direction and she wasn't there. My
Father-in-law later told me that this was Mary Taylor and the night I saw
her was the anniversary of her death.

Fascinating story. With so many people posting ghost stories from
other sources; the ghost of Mary actually appeared to you, Big Red?
You are not quoting another source? Just to make it clear here! :)

Most hitch-hikers get into the passenger side seat, any idea why she
got into the back?
