I recently read about the haunted ebay painting, have you all ever heard
about it and if you do, do you have any bad feelings about the painting?
Tell me about it!

It was a fascinating, if unsettling, painting. There was an
angry-looking little boy, with a girl standing beside him, facing him.
She looked more like a marionette, with jointed limbs, and was holding
some piece of machinery. Behind them was a window on which hands were
tapping. The first thing I thought on seeing it was that it was
holding some thing inside it. Very creepy.

Here's the auction posting in its entirety:

Personally, I think it's a cute story, but an obvious hoax. I mean, look at
the pictures without reading the little tale they've written to go with it. I
don't disagree that it's an unsettling painting, though. Someone was a couple
clicks off center, for sure.

I don't care about what the tale says, I don't like it, period.... You

LOL, one of the guys on one of hubby's mailing lists keeps sending the picture
out to the group as tongue-in-cheek "punishment" for saying things he doesn't
like. Weirds hubby out every time he sees it.

I do NOT intend to slight or offend anyone here who gets different feelings
about the painting, but I believe this is a hoax. This is someone who wants to
be responsible for creating a famous urban legend.

The painting is trippy, no doubt, but "disturbing" and "haunted" are two
completely different things.

Dear Ayleth,

I don't believe the legend, I just think that picture is horrid. I am an
artist, and I love to draw the macabre myself, and yes, my work is scary, but
there's something about this painting that just gives me the jeebies. Is it
haunted? I don't know... All I DO know is I don't like it.

<perk> You draw macabre stuff? Scary stuff? COOL! Do you have any of it on a
web page so I can see? :)

You know what I have always wanted? A painting of a haunted castle on a "dark
and stormy night" ... all in blacks and dark blues. I have been seeing the
exact right picture in my mind for as long as I can remember, but I've never
seen it done.

I can see why Steph... It is horrid.. I don't buy the story that the painting
actually "changed", but I seriously sense something horrible about that
painting.

Those children are the same ages as my son and daughter, and it really freaked
me out... I don't think that's the reason I feel this way though.. Maybe the
vibes come from the person who painted it?

Lance, there's something more here...

And I disregarded the story all together...

There's something evil about this one, like I said before, I paint spooky

from the macabre to something that is inertly (sp?) evil.

This painting reminds me of a batch of paintings we found at a farm my
sister was renting. We had to clean up a lot, (someday I might go into

creepy. We chalked it up to a poorly skilled art student on acid. Maybe
it's more of this cat's work surfacing.

Dear Smoque....

You have GOT to read this short story by Stephen King, "The Road Virus Heads

It fits the "tale" of this painting, and your post so much it is weird..

I think the boy died, and the girl was his only playmate, but was just
imaginary.
If I were a bettin' man, I would say he died of TB just after a new moon.
But that's ust my .02 I could be wrong. :)

The pics of the children "exiting" the painting is obviously fake, and very

The truth or honest opinion? My own wish is to be able to see the truth

Since you've never heard it or seen the musical, I'll give you a little
bit of background on it.
"Jesus Christ: Superstar", written and composed by Tim Rice and Andrew
Lloyd Webber, first exploded onto the scene in 1971. It is a Rock Opera
which chronicles the last week of the life of Jesus. Some INCREDIBLE talent
was gathered for the production of the album. Chief among them were Ian
Gillan of Deep Purple as Jesus, Yvonne Elliman as Mary Magdelene, who did
some great work with Eric Clapton, and Murray Head as Judas Iscariot.
Several #1 songs came from this Rock Opera, one of which was "I Don't Know
How To Love Him". It was made into a film in 1973 and starred Ted Healy as
Jesus. Depending on who you speak to, the movie was either spectacular or a
monumental flop. However, it brought Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber into
the spotlight as major writing and compsing talents. I recommend that you
get the Original CD with the original cast and that you give it a listen.

I'm not a psychologist or anything, but my impression of the painting is
this: that it was possibly painted by an adult with child abuse in their
history...possibly as a perpetrator and a formerly abused child.

I see the following (possible) symbolism:

A man's face with a boy's body -
This may represent a man who was sexually abused as a child, and
therefore who has problems with feelings of inadequacy as a man.
Abuse endured as a child may have led the artist to the
same tendencies as an adult.

The girl as a wooden, jointed figure, rather than human -
If the artist is a child abuser, this may indicate a need to deny
that little children - maybe only girls - are human. In order
to be able to carry out - or fantasize carrying out - the
deeds of abuse on the child, he cannot allow himself to
see the child as human and feeling.

Her hollow eyes may symbolize her inability to identify
him, or possibly be another part of the wish for her
to be inanimate. A person's eyes are the windows
to their souls, they say. And the artist doesn't wish to
see the girl as having a soul, feeling...etc.

The piece of 'machinery' held by the girl -
Very strange. May represent (in an abstract way),
something that was used in abuse against the artist
as a child, or that he/she may have used on a child.
It may also represent a "weapon" the child has to
use against the abuser, such as telling someone
of the abuse.

The children's hands in the window -
The hands are disembodied, which may again represent
a wish to see children as inanimate or not whole or human.
May also represent the isolation the artist felt during
his/her own abuse as a child, or be symbolic of
children in the artist's history that were abused.

The "ambience" of the picture.
Dark and brooding pictoral environments are notorious
in paintings representing tremendous negative emotions
and depression.

Wow...that's a pretty depressing and sad interpretation,
but I felt this the first time I saw this...and feel the same
way now - months later.

Kandle reflected:

>I'm not a psychologist or anything, but my impression of the painting is
>this: that it was possibly painted by an adult with child abuse in their
>history...possibly as a perpetrator and a formerly abused child.

It's interesting that everyone who's commented on it so far seems to have a
sense that the painter is/was male.

The hands remind me of VC Andrews' "Flowers in the Attic". As Kandle points
out, they are small hands -- not adult hands.

What exactly is it the girl is holding? A carburator? A canister bomb?
Everything else in the painting can be associated with children or a child's
perspective except this.

The painting disturbs a lot of people. As Kandle also pointed out, it reflects
dark symbolism that suggests the artist had major issues.

I personally find it predatory to put a painting like this up for auction as a
"haunted" painting. If the seller of this picture is also the artist, the
motivation is clearly to gain attention by spreading a hoax. If they acquired
the painting as they say they did, it takes the worst kind of opportunist to
prey upon the emotions of the artist as well as those who see the painting by
"misdirecting" that energy toward the supernatural for a quick buck.

Supposing it was painted by a terribly disturbed person, it may well
BE haunted, and marketable as such.

Hello all...

Well... I am happy to say this has been a very interesting and intelligent
thread. :o) I do agree with everyone on this.. (amazing, isn't it?)

I have never, in my life, seen a painting that has given me such yucky vibes
before. Someone needs to burn that thing.

This is a GREAT comment, and really made me think. Here's a theory to
consider:

I don't paint; my outlet is writing. They are both forms of expression, and a
means of "exorcizing" inner conflicts/feelings. I've never heard of an
original manuscript being haunted, but I have heard of haunted paintings.

I'm thinking that if I were tortured enough to create such a painting, I would
probably "haunt" the source of my torture, rather than the outlet. That
doesn't explain how objects like paintings and coatracks can seemingly house
spiritual energy, so I considered my favorite painting ... hanging on the wall
in my parlor.

I have invested considerable time meditating on the painting over the years.
Nearly everyone has had a painting "speak to them" at some point in their life
-- it just grabs their attention, and they "get" it. I like this painting
because I can imagine myself standing there next to the subject, overlooking
this peaceful place. This isn't supernatural at all -- it's just a painting I
really dig, and I spend a lot of time contemplating it.

So am I "charging" it with (for lack of better words) positive vibes? Some
here have suggested that negative energy directed toward a certain place or
thing over a period of time can cause a negative "charge". The interesting
question becomes, is the object itself so negatively charged that it ATTRACTS
negativity? Feeds on it?

Wouldn't we, then, be speaking of an object that would attract those things we
describe as "never human"? I'm speculating that if an object is haunted, it
perhaps isn't by anything that was ever human, but rather, by something that
feeds on the negative energy the object evokes.

Just a theory.

You may be right. I've often thought that there are places that attract
spirits that were never human, no theories on why.
