This however was ignored by the hierarchy and it was later developed into a
heavy bomber station. There were many crashes and catastrophe`s resulting
from this and it was later known as the "White Elephant" airfield.
The airfield finally closed in early 1946 but the site was continued in use
until the early 1950`s. However there have been many rumours that the
Decontamination Centre was haunted by aircrew in flying gear. One airman
who served there said he saw an airman in flying gear "step out of the mist
and then disappear before my eyes". Another officer said "it was always
when there was a mist, a slight drone can be heard sometimes and many people
have seen phantom figures in the mist".
In the early 1970`s, David Rimmer was working near the airfield and being
interested in aviation he decixded to take a look around the old runways, he
says, "the day was bright and sunny without the sign of even a breeze, I
was looking firstly at the old Watch Tower when I distinctly heard the sound
of radial engines being run-up. Looking upwards and around for the sign of
aircraft there was none to be seen. I also looked in an adjacent field for
evidence of any other type of machinery but there was nothing to be seen.
The experience lasted for about 10 to 15 minutes.
RAF Barkston Heath, Lincolnshire.
RAF Barkston Heath was brought into use in April 1941 and in January 1944
came under American control.
On New Years Eve in 1973, Mr Edward Bailey was driving his mother along the
B6403 road in his car, when through the darkness he saw a small red light
ahead in front of him. He slowed his car down as he approached to see a man
on a bicycle in front. As the road was quite narrow he slowed down and
stayed a safe distance behind waiting for road to widen to drive past. As
he crawled along the road his mother asked him why he was going so slow.
"I`m waiting until we get past that bike" he answered. "What bike"? his
mother remarked.
His mother could see no bicycle or anything else on the road ahead. Mr
Bailey could not believe it when he heard this. Then as he watched he saw
the man on the bicycle simply disappear before his eyes. Mr Bailey stopped
his car and got out to investigate but there was nothing to be seen.
In October 1990 another member of the public was driving his car along the
same road when he was shocked to suddenly see a figure appear in front of
his vehicle riding a bicycle, he swerved to avoid a collision. Stopping his
vehicle he also got out to investigate only to find an empty road and no
tangible explanation for the cyclist.
Many people that have driven past the old airfield on the B6403 have
reported lights and heard strange sounds coming from where the old hangers
used to be.
