Friends of mine had sent me DVD's of a show called Most Haunted. This
show had what appeared to be a group of paranormal investigators going
around the UK searching for ghosts, spooks and spectres. Watching the
first series, I was impressed with their presentation style, with the
show running at about 25 mins. The show was fast moving with slick
effects and reenactments and some sort of conclusion at the end. Being
an american, I obviously thought that these guys had always done this.
However, I later found out that Yvette Fielding was a childrens tv
presenter and their medium Derek was an ex footballer. As I continued
to watch the show on to series two, they went to a place called
Brannigans in Manchester. This was a case done by a previous
paranormal investigation group, way back in 1999 with an interview with
one of the investigators, Geoff Stanley. I later found out that he
belonged to a group called Phoenix (not Arizona) Paranormal
Investigations. On closer inspection, the Phoenix team went there
after stuff going on was getting out of hand. Minor poltergeist
activity and strange cold spots were proving to be too much for the
staff working there. From bar staff to bouncers, no one seemed to be
staying. The group went in a total of seven times to not only try and
document the phenomena, but to 'quieten down' the aggrieved spooks, who
we possibly connected to a High Methodist branch of the church. With a
bar downstairs and a church that had at one time housed 16000 people,
there was a lot of work to do. Further digging found that the
paranormal investigators had to create a perimeter of containment, as
there were a couple of nasty guys upstairs. One was a caretaker and
the other was a Reverend. After repeated visits, the activity had
lessened and was few and far between. Phoenix Paranormal Investigators
had been in, done some clearance work, starred in a segment for
'Psychic Livetime', a satelite tv show in the UK where a glass had been
thrown by an invisible force and the crew captured a spirit light
zooming away at high speed. No one heard about it, nothing was done.
2002 saw them talking about Brannigans on a documentary called Haunted
Britain (currently being shown on Discovery Travel. A very believeable
piece, with genuine tension and apprehension. Brannigans became quiet.
Perhaps, a little too quiet!
Fast forward to 2003. A relatively new show on British Satellite and
cable called Most Haunted began its second series with a trip to
Brannigans Manchester. This was first aired on 4/8/2003. The format
was now an hour long with more slick video fx, color to black and white
and new music. The highlight of this program was the apparent
possession of Derek Acorah (real name Johnson, ex footballer) So
vigorous this possession was, the crew found it difficult to bring him
out of it. A pen friend in the UK, met Geoff Stanley shortly after
this show went out at a Pagan festival. He relayed the story that due
to insurance problems, Geoff was unable to be in the show, other than
for the interview, however he asked the manager of Brannigans to stay
and he let him, provided that he would stay behind the cameras. When
the possession happened with DA, Geoff had to administer healing to
Derek, as he was finding it dificult to move his legs. Eventually, DA
recovered and on camera vowed never to go back again. On further
talking to staff members, it seems they sat in circle (which was
briefly filmed). According to Geoff, the circle cast, was not closed
down, acting as a doorway to the spirit plain. There were rumors of
staff playing with makeshift ouija boards down in the basement staff
room, opening more portals. The place was getting a little more
active."
Geoff also related a story that in early 2004, Phoenix was contacted by
the screenwriter for White Noise, Niall Johnson. His meeting with them
was at........................Brannigans. Geoff said he was interested
in investigation methods for a possible future film. Niall was given a
small tour of the upstairs of Brannigans and spoke to some staff.
Staff members said that many people had stopped overnight in the wake
of the Most Haunted program and a charity sleepover was planned in a
couple of weeks time. I found the article at a website called Ghosts
UK, (http://www.ghosts-uk.net/modules/news/article.php?storyid=340)
called "Lifes a Gas for Teetotal Vicars Spirit". Geoff later found out
that the night had not gone to plan, with hi jinx turning to sheer
terror, as a large block of brickwork was thrown and came through a
false floor, landing in the foyer. Things were starting to
stir...............
Fast forward to October 31st 2003. Radio station Galaxy 102 decided to
hold a live radio show from upstairs in Brannigans. The show was
supposed to last three or four hours. it lasted just over one hour
citing communication problems with equipment. According to Brannigans
staff, the young radio show staff and technicians were picking up
strange noises, footsteps and then a pane of glass was smashed
seemingly by an unknown hand. Subsequent stopovers and live shows
were halted, with a number of padlocks keeping unwanted people out.
However, spooks do not need keys to leave their prison. Geoff had kept
on eye on Brannigans, making sure that the crystals were kept 'topped
up'. Only problem was, the protection was partially destroyed,
culminating with a home visit from the reverend. The thing was, the
reverend had evolved. On doing a Google search for brnnigans
experiences, through various forums, people visiting the bar had a
feeling of being watched when it was quiet to feeling drained. My
friend asked 'You say the rev had evolved?, but into what? Geoff
replied that the rev now had vampiric properties, his spirit was
actively draining the life energy from the young people 'drinking
dancing and cavorting' downstairs, retreating back into the bell tower
until the next night. Early December, Geoff was woken by a phone call
from Jacky, another psychic in Phoenix asking if anything strange had
happened to him tonight. Yes, I will count to three and we'll say what
we experienced in one word. Jacky said demon, Geoff said Reverend.
Seems that the psychics who went in initially to Brannigans got a visit
from a 'foot soldier' demon sent by the reverend. Jacky reckoned the
demon was none too bright, trying to chew on her head to see if she was
tasty. Jacky called H, the other psychic and she had been in the woods
with her coven and felt she was being watched from close quarters by a
demon, lurking behind the trees. She then said, this has come from the
church, the thing is getting stronger..................................

AUGUST 2005 - My friends, friend of a girl friend (confused?) has
spoken to Geoff today. Seems that Most Haunted, the possible catalyst
for the increase in activity is looking in broadcasting LIVE FROM
BRANNIGANS ON SEPTEMBER 4TH. Geoff added, 'this is not wise as I have
been having dreams of something like this happening. If a psychic gets
taken over by the rev, it could be fatal............... Geoff went in
to Brannigans last week and sat there, and took notes. Various
containment spells around the building had been DECONSTRUCTED meaning
someone has high knowledge of craft and/or mediumship. There is a
vortex of energy emanating from the VIP bar, all the way to the bell
tower. The rev is aware of Most Haunted returning, as Antix
productions have already been in scouting for places for static
cameras. Geoff also sensed that someone (antix?) had been searching
for crystals and talismans for removal. There are several portals
around the building that have been opened through ouija board abuse.
Friends of mine in the UK have sent me new episodes of Most Haunted and
I have noticed they are using a technique they call 'Glass Divination'
This is called in my country a ouija board session. Ouija boards are
still actively sold here in toy shops, although not recommended for
your little boy/girl. You don't want a visit from Captain Howdy (The
Exorcist) I always thought that using Ouija board in the UK was
illegal. If this is so, are they not breaking the law? Also if they
are repsonsible for removing protections for the sake of making a live
show more interesting they are morally wrong!!!

Geoff is trying to contact the psychics in Most Haunted to warn them of
the dangers they may face. If ouija board, glass divination, whatever
you want to call it is done, coupled with Yvette Fieldings taunting
('come and have a go if you think you're hard enough') coupled with
being a live event, someone could get hurt.

Kahunaking,

A great recap on a series that is now showing in the U.S. if you have
cable tv. I'm not sure if it's on A&E or the Sci Fi Channel, but it is on
every Friday night here in Chicago land. So you may be able to check it
out on your own now.

I have a problem with the team. First I think Derek . . . or whatever
the "alleged" psychic's name is . . . is a pure Charleton. If you watch the
show carefully (with the exception of the female host) I think many of the
other team members think so too. He seems to NEVER go into a place where
there isn't some strange, horrible spirit there. And he talks to them as if
they are Aunt Mable sitting behind the bar. He's often very general and
comes up with some of the most outlandish things. I think the female members
of the team adore him and believe him unquestioningly. As for me I think
he's boinking the hostess who hangs on his every incredible word seemingly
withoug question. I thought the whole possession thing was laughable.

On to the hostess. She's an idiot. She sits on beds, wanders around
cellars, up and down the castle stairs DARING entities to manifiest their
presence, and then inevitably runs or cries or screams if they do ! ! !
(also a demonstratable reaction often exhibited by other members of the
team.) For instance in last weeks episode . .. and I'm not sure where it was
from now except an old castle looking place . . . Three guys in a room
daring the entity, one saying "I'm not afraid of you, you can't scare me."
All of a sudden the tv comes on by itself and these three he-men are running
around crying and holding their heads and screaming. What tha ? . . . !

My opinion of this group with a few exceptions is that they are
insufferable bunch of amatures who have no idea what they're doing and are
being led around the country side by this Derek clown and a hostess who's
getting paid to do something she has no knowledge about nor stomach for.

There a couple of members of the cast (but they have background roles)
who seem genuine and look for plausible explanations (this can most often be
seen in the summation which you seem to have picked up upon as well). But as
a whole, we watch them for what we call "The Boob Factor". Mostly laughable
and I think crews like this who stumble upon enough luck to get their own
show do so much to discredit competent, reasonable investigators. Do they
run into things that go bump in the night? Yes, occasionally they do, but
when they do they are so busying running away, screaming, crying that they
can make no common sense or assessment of the event. Truly the Beverly
Hillbillies of Ghost Hunting. Often when "anything" goes bump, no matter how
small they always attribute it to paranormal. Anyone who knows anythinga
bout this phenom knows a million things go bump in the night with a
perfectly logical explanation. We live in a nearly brand new home. That its
haunted there is no doubt though activity has slowed considerably. But
whenever something odd happens we always look for the logical before we
scream, poo poo and hide under the covers <g>. This group is just the
opposite.

I found the Phoenix group to be even more amatuerish.

Hope you don't mind my 2 cents worth. I much prefer the Ghost Hunters
from Rhode Island who approach everything with a skeptical bent. Of course
they have thier own idiot, Brian who sees a ghost in his pants if he farts
loud enough. But generally speaking these people seem to be honest, non
hysterical and debunk many of the things they are called to investigate.
Having watched on of their sound men get knocked solid on his butt on camera
was a great piece of film and follow up analysis was great, professionally
done.

Thanks for your thoughts and have a great week . Boo !

Sad to hear that you folk who are secondary viewers to this series feel that
the show is staged somewhat. Of course, we first timers (and in a good few
cases, second, third and fourth timers) have had more of a chance to
re-assess the validity of some of the events.

If you feel that DA's (Derek Acorah) methods and sometimes, evidential
material is questionable then the is a right you so truly deserve to voice.
Some of us here in the UK also feel that some of his statements are wide of
the mark, but in truth, the very nature of spiritualism is not an exact
science - yes, things are not always as clear as is often protrayed. Most
material divulged by spiritualists is vague because the historical facts
have been vague to begin with. For instance Ed III was proclaimed the true
and rightful king of England but only recently has it come to bear that he
userped the thrown and a rather pleasant chap from Australia is the rightful
monarch of these great isles - evidenced blood lines.

In respect of the Brannigan's nightclub episode, it was more the evidence
supplied on camera that raises issue, not the apparent posession of DA.
Again, we hear a wind whistling up rapidly during one seance yet there was
no atmospheric justification for such; Evidential smells of children's
vomit; light anomalies etc.

I think most of us here in the UK now look upon DA as a mere historical
record of possible events and we are appreciative of his talent being
questionable on occasion but also factual on others.

When you guys are given the opportuinty to view the current series you will
hear more questionable comment from DA and the occasional mis-factual
comments by another medium (David ...). There is ample reason to suspect
their motives on each and every series - wannabe famous psychics etc. - but
on the whole they appear to turn over more correct information than not
though we here see the show as having more merit than just its two mediums.

I have just watched an episode of a US/Canadian TV show called 'Girly
Ghosthunters', and for questions to be raised about the validity of 'Most
Haunted' when left to compare it with 'Girly Ghosthunters' - more 'squeal'
than 'real', more 'taunt' than 'haunt', more 'switch to another less tedious
channel, like Disney', for something more entertaining.

American spin, no less.

Though the show does state its content to be 'for entertainment purposes
only' how else would you expect them to ascribe the show?

Yet they do push towards the barriers of science in the equipment that they
utilise. Not all of us accept the séance, oui-ja board, table tipping or
glass divination as being scientific but EVP recorders, EMF meters, NEMF
meters, Laser Temperature and thermo camera's do go a long way into backing
up their case.

True, they do not claim to have 'absolute' proof but they have raised an
interest in a subject that otherwise would be consigned to the world of
'kooky. Those of us outside this apparent 'world of kooky take an interest
purely on the grounds of 'entertainment' and an awareness that there is more
to this world than should be accepted.

The description of the cast as 'a bunch of ass clowns' is purely an opinion,
of which, Jeff, you are entirely at will to express but don't let such
comment be hidden behind your real opinions. If you don't understand it's
value just say, don't be shy, though do try to temper opinion with some
fact, it gets more respect.

In today's less than, democratic world, anyone with more than a passing
interest in this subject is described as being 'Kooky or something less
tasteful, therefore a programme purporting to be anything other than a
'entertaining' is often left open to the world of science to 'critically'
tear them apart as not being a correctly applied scientific study using the
full methods of debunking available to them. The term 'entertainment' is
used as a get-out clause in order to protect their position. Heck, you guys
have Judge Judy! Do you take that show seriously? - "The scenes and cases
depicted in this programme are for entertainment purposes only and do not
reflect the true nature of the individual case, nor are they
representational of the American judiciary procedures."

For more traditionally ascribed 'Ass Clowns' see Mr. George W. (Boom, Boom)
Bush and Mr. Tony (Phoney) Blair!

Well . . . lol lol

I wasn't trying to start an international dispute ~! lol lol And I do
respect Tailspin1's opinion. Somewhere in this sometimes nasty world we've
been taught or have been taught to accept the premise that if we disagree
with someone they must be an idiot etc. And then of course that person may
have the same perspective and that makes us an idiot ! Then we just have a
name calling fest instead of being fun reasonable people, enjoying common
interests.

The point I was making about Most Haunted and our family watches a lot of
these types of shows from wherever we can find them, is that the
participants or at least some of the key participants seem to lack a
professional. even reasonable approach. Without repeating the entire
previous post, it's just my opinion that everywhere Dereck goes there's some
fantastic tale either no one's ever heard of or everyone's heard of. Just to
many hits from him. I think even some of the team members feel that way. And
the hostess is a more than a bit weepy at the slightest sign of a real "BOO"
!

All this being said we still enjoy the show. (if I could only figure out how
to edit big D out of there) <grin> And in any event Tailspin1 I want ya to
know there was certainly no offense intended for our cousins across the sea,
of whom, I'm a direct decendant. Have a spooky week all. And apologies if I
did offend.

Then I too should apologise and appreciate the gesture. ;o)

For the comments regarding MH I would go so far to say that yes, there are
some on the show who unintentionally, make something of a mockery of the
content in some eyes but in others they add levity. I can only laugh,
occasionally cringe, at Yvette Fielding's antics when taunting the other
side into reaction - 'Don't mess with what you don't understand!' Mind you,
how many times have we all underestimated our foe only to find that their
armoury is far greater? Though I will admit that this last series has seen
her develop something of a more mature and healthy attitude towards her
subject.

DA should be taken for what he is - a medium - It's all relative guesswork.
The question should be: "Precisely how much info does he have at hand before
the investigation commences?" The show claims none but we in our house feel
that any hunter worth his salt will already have a certain amount of
knowledge before we enter.

Anyways Joshua Bad Bear and all others, a healthy respect is accorded to you
all: ATEOTD - we all follow similar interests in the supernatural so why
should we all bitch about it? ;o)

First there is no such thing as an "EVP" recorder, just a tape or some other
type voice recorder. The other items arent exactly "Scientific" and can be

There is some very serious research being done by legitimate scientists on
things that are thought to be paranormal. These people are the "kooks" your
talking about, there are a zillion of em out there. I know what they are, my

Point of order on the EVP recorder - any recording device, triggered by
voice (voice activated) is by definition a voice activated recorder. Because
it uses either batteries or other electronic means it is therefore
'Electronic'.

They aren't exactly 'not scientific' either but this point may be wasted on
you.

And Kieran O'Keefe is one of those 'serious scientists' who are on the show
to give a sensible viewpoint.

The world of science is still trying to prove the world is flat and without
the kind of teams that MH represents the scientific world wouldn't even give
the subject credence. Because they serve a purpose the scientists have
started to look more closely.

If you don't like the show you know the score - switch channels! Otherwise,
don't complain.

Recently I said on here that I believed him effectively to be a charlatan, and the clincher came a couple of nights
later, when he claimed that the current owner of the house (standing in the room at the time), was the reincarnation of
one of the spirits he was sensing. Now I've heard everything.

Any reputable medium would be driven to make spirits aware of their situation and encourage them to move on, yet we see
nothing of this.

Nobody denies that shows like this are basically the equivalent of Blair

Thanks, Good post, you should moderate. Anyway speaking of Blair Witch I
grew up 2 miles from the filming location. My family and I went to a theatre
in Harford County to watch the opening and it was packed. After it was over
those who didnt walk out of that piece of crap of a movie talking outside
mentioned just about nothing other than how lousy it was. The acting was
atrocious, everything else sucked. The marketing was pure genuis because of
all the gullibility.

I thought Blair. . . Was absolutely terriffic. As did millions of others.
The whole concept was unique and scary imho and I applaud these bright young
film makers. They really sucked me in Jeff and I thought it was great. Don't
blame them for a sequel which I did not see and heard was horrid, but why
would these young people turn down the money. Great job i thought. What
makes the world go round i suppose. Did you catch that goofy thing they did
on A&E about 2-3 months prior to the release.. that was the real grabber I
thought lol.

I copied this from the travel channel site (because sometimes links
don't work that well)
"Travel Channel Fridays at 9 p.m. ET/PT for Most Haunted, a new series
that takes you inside haunted locations around Europe. Host Yvette
Fielding is joined by a ghost-hunting team, which includes medium Derek
Acorah, as well as top experts from the paranormal field. Attempting
different methods and experiments to try and communicate with the dead,
the team is determined to prove the existence of life after death.

The crew uses night-vision and thermal-imaging cameras to investigate
the locations and experiments with parapsychology and séances to try and
connect with individuals who have passed on. Under close surveillance,
each member of the team investigates a different area. Experts then
study the footage caught on tape from their journeys to determine
whether the location is, indeed, haunted."
http://travel.discovery.com/fansites/mosthaunted/about.html
It is kind of irritating that they don't back it up scientifically with
facts and follow a set procedure for processing what they do find.
However I feet that this series is far better than the US rip off
entitled "Dead Famous Ghostly Encounters" shown on satellite on the
Biography Channel about 1am Tuesday night.
"Most Haunted" has in it's favor cool graphics of the buildings with a
blue print effect showing what rooms they're going to visit, background
on the rooms hauntings as to what's happened.
When their psychic starts talking and naming spirits and their gripes
they do a bottom left hand corner pop up window that confirms such
people lived there or where not found in records, which is cool and
makes it interesting (everyone loves a good ghost story and his telling
of events is interesting, so credit it them for, entertainment also.)
The taunting of the ghosts by the little blonde host is predictably
going to end in screams and comments of "I want to leave now."
So while I find myself commenting back to the screen and asking them why
do you ask for confirmation and then run off in fear!?!! It's still
better than "Dead Famous Ghostly Encounters".
DFGE goes in search of dead celebrities (Marilyn Monroe, James Dean,
Frank Sinatra) in famous places that the celebrity might have visited
and hope they find anyone on the other side to talk to them.
The main host is a blonde with a Scottish accent (because to Americans,
accents are just so sexy, right?) She claims to be a sceptic, but ends
most encounters by crying or saying "I feel funny and want to leave now"
while in daylight will say she's "not sure" if she believes.
Her co-host is a "sensitive" who claims most often "Honest to God, I've
never felt anything like this before" to most situations. He does some
head rolls, a few moans and later says he has an impression, but mostly
when things lag he hooks up with the blonde and then starts saying
things to freak her out and get a reaction.
What both shows have in common is the freaky looking night vision
shooting that makes eyes glow and look scary in their pursuit of
entertaining ghost tales.

After the movie made a ton of money which everyone in the film industry
rightly attributed to marketing more than the film (I didnt meet ANYONE who
thought it was good) the actors made an appearance on Good Morning America.
They stated, and this was from thier own mouth's, that they earned about
$500 each. That the producers didnt want to pay anything more out to them.
They were sticking by their contract and would not sue for more, which as
far as I know they didnt.

I too, have watched DFGE (Dead Famous in the UK) and Gayle Porter seems to
epitomise the typical view from most skeptics - that is: "They don't exist
but if one frightens me I'm gonna get the hell outta here." We are now at
the second series and neither Chris nor Gayle have shown anything that has
raised hairs on the back of my neck yet.

Contrary to a few other opinions MH does seem to have more scientific value,
through the equipment used and the setting up of each experiment. True,
there are some unreal elements in the form of DA and YF (they are the
entertainment value) but on the whole the rest of the team's efforts are
gaining respect among paranormal groups.

Carl lists himself as being a skeptic; Stewart lists himself as being a
skeptic; John, Rick, Richard, Kieron, Andy and the other John all fall on
the side of skeptics. Infact, the only believers are DA, YF, Kathy (The hair
and make-up artists) and David Wells.

As I recall about 2-3 months before the movie was released in the U.S. they
put together a special on A &E as if it were one of the many cop reality
shows now out. It was done as if it were an ongoing investigation complete
with interviews of local chiefs of police, crime scene experts etc. That was
the hook that got me. The story was these kids turned up missing, an crime
scene expert was interviewed who showed the audience a stone fence wall
claiming it dated back 300 years. While looking around the wall they noticed
what appeared to be a strap of some kind. Turns out they dug up the wall and
under this 300 year wall was the video camera the kids were carrying and as
of the making of the show the film was being analysed and they couldn't
release what was on it.

lol a real smart marketing thing. The whole show was really creepy and I
think may have been even more ingenious than the movie itself. So the movie
and the concept was pretty successful and made some bright young people some
good bucks.

I doubt anyone still looks at this posting, however just in case anyone does I was part of the team who did the radio show from Brannigans. I can state that yes we did have some experiences there that cannot be explained, though the pane of glass smashing we are convinced was a prank. However there were a number if very interesting physical and auditory experiences and some bizarre interference with our broadcast equipment. It had been running fine all day then, as with the lights we started having problems. The reason we shut down early was threefold. First one if the presenters was so scared they left crying, second our psychic had a funny turn (I know because I carried her out) and third our 100% sceptic engineer was so unnerved by the problems he said he wanted to leave. One final point. I was last to leave, as I walked out someone grabbed my forearm and tugged me back. Thinking i had forgotten someone i turned round. There was nobody there. Was my mind playing tricks after an odd night? No idea.
