Today I took a look at _More Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark_ and its
version
of the Bloody Mary story, and found that the author claimed that Mary
Worth and Bloody Mary are the same. Perhaps I am reading too much into
this
assertion -- he may merely mean that the two versions reflect the same
fundamental story -- but I inferred from the manner in which it was put
that
the "identity" of Mary Worth and that of Bloody Mary are the same. It was
also
asserted that this Mary may have been a witch hanged at Salem.
I would like to know if anyone out there can a) substantiate that
Bloody Mary is precisely Mary Worth carried over into the current
generation,
and not merely a similar story, or b) can trace the significance of the
name Mary as applied to this family of stories. The book lists three
possible
names, all of which involve Mary; all versions told on the net also
involved
some variation of Mary. There are surely exceptions -- a friend of mine
from
Alabama tells me that the version of this story told in her home town is
centered instead upon an axe-murderess from local history -- but the trend
seems to be that the ghost, whoever she might be, is named Mary. Have any
of the researchers of this game traced this thread?

I'm really sorry to aask this, but..............
Who's Mary Worth? The only Mary worth I know of is in the comics and I've
never read the comic.

In a sense, this is my question as well, although I doubt the figure
has
anything to do with the comic book character, unless the name of the
comic figure was an inside joke playing off the folklore.
