Greetings All!
Just thought I would add my thoughts on this "spider thread".
Did you know that the spider carries potent spirit medicine to those
who follow the shaman's path? For them, a spider can be their totem
(spirit guide). Can you imagine squashing a spider that was sent to
you by the spirits in hopes of giving you it's symbolic message?!
Yikes!

The spider's medicine is one in which they are eithier trying to get
you to think and act on your goals, dreams and living your joy.
Perhaps that is how the superstition of "bad luck" came about.
The spider teaches you how to take your dreams and weave them into
reality. To teach you that the mind and spirit is so powerful, that
that which you invision can become a reality. Everything begins in the
energetic world before it manifests in the physical world.
From experience I know, that you can make your dreams come true.
Remember that old saying "Whatch what you dream or ask for, you just
might get it?" Same applys to negative dreaming or thoughts. You do
not want them to manifest into reality. I'm sure everyone has
experienced or known someone who's greatest fear came true.

So, if a spider has come into your life, perhaps it was sent to remind
you to pay attention to those negative thoughts and fantasies, or to
perhaps start doing creative visualization to achieve abundance in
your life.

As one who practices shamanism, I pay attention when a spider makes an
appearance.
I will admit, I do not like them crawling on me, but to me it is a
gift to have them do so, that I walk and radiate a non threatening
energy to them so that they can remind me of my thoughts and dreams. I
must honor and respect that. I thank the spider and take paper and put
it outside or off me.

Besides, I'm sure they think we are pretty creepy too...I mean they
are only trying to make a livin' also ;-p

To kill something, with no thought, pause or reaction, no matter how
small, to shaman this is a sign of one who is walking out of balance
and caught up within themselves.

Also, if one knows of the medicine of the spider, and still wishes it
away, well then, that might tell you a bit about whats really going on
within you. A buried feeling of being unworthy of happiness? A fear of
achieving? Get out of your own way, start digging and find out.

Peace and blessings to all,

Eileen Smith

This is really fascinating!

This reminds me of this really HUGE brown and hairy spider that made
it's appearance right next to me out of nowhere. Needless to say
I was really spooked (I'm arachnophobic) and I ran out of my
room looking for something to "gently guide him out" of my room.
I came back a few seconds later and it was *GONE*. Just gone. Looked
under my notice board, under my table, everywhere.. it was just
simply gone.

And anyone who's seen these huge spiders know that the crawl
really sl-o-o-wly. I've assumed that the spider just simply
escaped thru some route I don't know about.. but after
reading your post.. well.. maybe not.

Thanks again for this fascinating tidbit!

Colin.

On that note , I'd like to remind everyone to PLEASE watch where you are
walking at all times , and save our little snail friends the misery of being
crunched !
I am very concerned for the snails , I walk ahead of my hubby and point them
out in case he doesn't see them. And the very few times I do crunch one , I
feel like the awfulest , most horrible person in the world.
So , please , just be careful , ok ?

Oooohh.. bad girl. Bad bad girl!

I also had a friend who was happily tucking into his meal, at lunchtime,
*during* Ramadan...

I can't imagine what the hawkers (who are Muslim) must've been
thinking of while serving him.

BTW he also attends Novena (a Catholic prayer service usually devoted
to the Virgin Mary) to spot "cute gals"..

What it all boils down to is that we are all humans, with our own
human weaknesses...

There was once a poem in "The Wizard of Id" comic strip- I think the
Bard was singing it:

"Listen to me, and I'm sure you'll agree
That the bravest man in history
Was neither a soldier nor a champion of law,
But the first to devour an oyster raw!"

Ew! Snot on the half-shell!

Me too.  I had a HUGE one come and knock on my back door a while back.  It was a variety that doesn't live wild in our area and I mean it was BIG!!  I set it up in my bathtub.  It stayed a while til i arranged with a local petstore for it to come live there in a big tank they have in their front windows (had rescued crocs in it, but they got big enough to be released in a sanctuary)  Then within the next two weeks my husband and his boss both came across large turtles of the same variety trying to cross the road in two distant areas of our county (360 some sq. miles).  The pet store has a collection now!  I think a lot of you would appriciate this place.  Instead of cages they keep the animals for sale in open enclosures so people can go in and interact with them, they have a very large staff to moniter the people and make sure they behave.  They perform rescuses -never turn away an animal, I mean they knew where to find a little lost crocodiles home, for goodness sakes!  Actually learn how to take care of any exoctics that come their way, allow people to put up their "free kittens" signs in their front window...Wether or not you agree with the idea of pet stores or not, you have to agree that this is a far cry from your average strip mall pet store and maybe more of those guys should be following this stores example.  Sorry, thought I'd just finish spinning us totally OT!   Uh, did I mention the legend of the turtle that ate the world....

We have a number of places in Baltimore who help wild and misplaced
animals. Their is a lady who will take care of any baby bird you find
(I've taken her a couple). She just sits there and they act as though
she's been hanling them since they hatched. A number of animal rescue
habitats exist around the area also. Thank goodness for them. These
poor animals are often headed toward their mating grounds which no
longre exist except under a few inces of concrete.

I like turtles too. I have two. One is a box turtle and he loves to sit
on my shoulder and look out the window while driving to our vacation
destination and appreciates a nice under the chin massage. The other is
a female red slider who would much rather bite my finger than eat food.
Really, she tries to bite me any chance she gets.

We had a turtle in my family home when I grew up, but it just
disappeared one day! Never saw him again. Same thing happened to my
tadpoles! and the little bird I nursed to health! I think they were
spirited away. (and the spirit was a 5'4", blonde haired lady who told
me they just vanished!)

Also, that train of thought is for who discovered what plants tasted

I read somewhere that these original ideas come to people in dreams or
visions, which are taken as messages from the spiritual realm. Now, a
person would have to have stong believe in the power of their dream/vision
to eat a snail. But the plants and herbs, supposedly come from spiritual
visions that healers sought through divination/prayer/vision quests

I , too , have wondered that , but my biggest question has always been , who
was it that was out for a nice stroll , came across a random plant and said
"hmmm... I bet if I dried this out , crumbled it up , rolled it in a leaf , lit
it with fire and smoked it , it would feel mighty good !!"

I heard somewhere that there's a treatise out by Terrence McKenna stating that it
was the psychotropic plants that gave us our "god consciousness" in the first place
way back when the first guy came across a random mushroom or cactus. I think that
stuff is always there and these things just open the doors or windows and let us see
what's going on on other planes.

----------------------------------------------------------------------
The Learning Kingdom's Cool Fact of the Day for July 8, 1998
----------------------------------------------------------------------

What kind of spiders have the best vision?

----------------------------------------------------------------------

The best-seeing spiders are the Salticids, or jumping spiders. They
are the ones that seem to be looking back at you!

Jumping spiders have four large eyes in the front of their face, and
four more on top. The eyes in front are highly developed, with
special internal muscles that can move the retina. By moving the
retina, the spider can change its direction of sight without moving
its head, just as humans do when we move our eyes.

body size.

You are most welcome...jumping spiders scare me, too. I'm not scared by

a spider appeared crawling up my right leg. while a fly was buzzing around my head. i warded it off me. as it was crawling on the ground under one of the little legs of my seat it just disappeared infront of my eyes. just gone . it wasn't able to climb up anywhere because i checked the seat.
