It was a shock a few minutes ago to visit Hacker News and read

https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=20482768 -- Patrick Winston of MIT CSAIL has died (mit.edu)

As an AI enthusiast, I have been at a lecture by his predecessor Marvin Minsky and at a book-signing by his successor Rodney Brooks, but I never had the opportunity to come face-to-face with Patrick Winston.

One commenter on Hacker News wrote:
"But he said one thing that I immediately agreed with (conceptually) and have recalled at many hard times in my life: "Perhaps we will look back on even this with fondness." (But in Latin, because Pat Winston)"

"Forsan et haec olim meminisse juvabit" is the original quote -- which every classicist knows by heart -- from Vergil's Aeneid.

All the greats of AI have been passing away -- Marvin Minsky; John McCarthy et al., and now Patrick Winston. So we who toil on are standing on the shoulders of giants.

I had dinner one evening with Pat Winston at O'Hare Airport in the late autumn
of 1983. He was on a stopover for a connecting flight to Champaign-Urbana from
Boston, and I had applied for the system mamager position at the AI Lab. We
had a nice chat, and that was that.

I met him again at the 1984 NCAI in Austin, where we talked about the fact that
I had just interviewed at Stanford (the job that brought me to where I am today).

A true gentleman and scholar.
