Today was the shutdown of wsmr-simtel20.army.mil, one of
the few (if any?) remaining DECsystem 2060s on the net. This was
my favorite site for CP/M software, and I found a few MS-DOS
items of interest as well. Out of curiosity and as a tribute, I
had an open anonymous ftp session when the machine was disconnected.
Here is the session log; thank you, simtel20.

Here in Uppsala, Sweden we still have a 2060 running.
Not with anonymous ftp, though...

I'd like to thank all the mainatainers of Simtel for their work over the
years. I guess I think of it as the original ftp site.

When I started using the Internet Simtel was one of the first machines I
learned to FTP things from. It is also the machine that I associate the most
with what was arpanet. To this day I was typing its address ( occasionally)
as simtel20.army.mil.

A question: What exactly is going to happen to the hardware that was
simtel20?

Well, we still have the primary mirror site at oak.oakland.edu:/pub/cpm

I do hope that whatever system is set up to replace the MSDOS archives
can find time to support the very infrequent uploads of CP/M software.

I too have fond memories of first learning to FTP from SIMTEL ... *sigh*

If they are "upgrading" thier computer resources, the process will be as
follows:

A) They are required (by public law) to screen for anyone in the Army
that has submitted a request for computer resources. If this machine
will meet the request, it will be transferred and Uncle Sam will not
have to spend any more of our tax dollars.

B) If there are no matches, then the computer gets turned into the Defense
Reclamation Management Office, who will screen the other services.

C) If the other services don't want it, the screening process continues
through Federal and Civil agencies.

D) If noone is still interested, consideration is given to donation to
charitable orginizations or loaning it to museums.

E) Finally, if nothing else, they will auction it off to the highest
(public) bidder.

As a quick aside, this auction is announced in the Commerce Business Daily,
but the screening cycle has to be 90 days. So, be looking for a New Year's
sale!

I agree, I got a lot of mileage out of ole' simtel20, especially
before the ARPA split and its resultant renaming. Thanks guys.
