The company was Digital Equipment Corporation. It was an imitation
New Hampshire plate (their motto is "Live free or die"). It actually
said:

LIVE FREE OR DIE
*
U U NN N III X X
U U N N N I X X
U U N N N I X
U U N N N I X X
UUUU N NN III X X

TRADEMARK OF BELL LABS *

The large UNIX was, of course, solid green, not lots of little characters
as I have drawn. And yes, the asterisk on the bottom line was in the
position shown.

I remember the DECUS symposium many years ago when Armando Stetnor stood
up and said, "You have been asking when you could get a Unix license from
DEC. The answer is now.", holding up one of these plates.

I managed to get one and taped it to the inside of the rear window of
my car, which already had the personalized plate RSX GURU.

I left it parked at the airport when I went to the next symposium.
When I returned, someone had written in the dust on the window, "RSX is
a trademark of DEC".

Sorry, but I intend to keep mine, along with the similar ULTRIX plate.

Several years ago, a company was using a license plate to promote it's
product. It was greenish, and said "UNIX - Live Free or Die".

If you have one of these, in decent shape, and would like to trade it

for some "Sex, Drugs and Unix" buttons, send me some e-mail.

Thanks,
Andy

Last year I saw someone with vanity plates that said "UNIX V".
Standard issue AZ plates, tho.

It was also real.

The New Hampshire state motto, which appears on the bottom of all of their
license plates, says "Lives Free or Die." Leor Zolman, who wrote BDS C
(yes, it stood for Brain-Damaged Software), had his car registered there,
and he had UNIX as his vanity plate.

(Leor wrote BDS C on a dare during the semester break of his sophmore
(junior?) year from MIT. He saw the profit potential, and never went
back.)

I bought Leor's motorcyle from him, and since I didn't have my license yet
I drove his car back while he rode the bike over to my apartment.

I saw, two years ago, the real ones: those that are issued by the Department
of State (the red, white and blue ones) "UNIX V" on a dark big American 2 doors
car in Summit, N.J. (park in front of a singles bar, around midnight) I wonder
who was the driver?

Bye, folks

Speaking of all these Live Free or Die UNIX plates, I wonder if anyone
from New Hampshire actually has a vanity plate that says UNIX....

I tend to doubt this.
The DOS plates have a letter indicating the grade (D-iplomat,
C-onsul,S-taff), then two for the country (DL = Germany) and
digits to identify the specific car.

However, the District had a red white & blue series of plates
once that looked (to the casual observer) similar. I remember
seeing a Citroin {sp?} SM with "007" as the plate....

Send $5 (I think) to

New Hampshire Department of Safety
Motor Vehicle Division
Hazen Drive
Concord, NH 03301

and you can find out.

BTW: There is a Mass UNIX plate.

The person in the cubicle next to me has a "UNIX" plate from Rhode
Island ... although it says "Ocean State" instead of "Live Free or
Die".

I believe that when Encore started working on their real-time kernel
extensions to their Umax OS that they had license plates printed up
that said "UMAX: Live Fast or Die" ...

My license plate says "UNIXHED." I've seen a few other UNIX plates around
here (Silicon Valley), including "UNIX C" and "EMACS".

About a year ago, I was driving on '280 and was passed by "UNIX C." I gave
him a friendly toot from my horn, and he gave me the finger! These UNIX
types are antisocial.

George Goble, the local UNIX guru at Purdue, has a big white Pontiac
Transport with a plate that reads "UNIX". (Hi ghg!) The same van also has
an air conditioner that runs on his new Freon replacement, which I'M SURE

I've heard a rumour about the ultimate UNIX license plate:

"/DEV/CAR"

Apparently it even had the slashes.

I'm the proud(?) owner of the ND plates "UNIX V7". ND's plate motto is "The
Peace Garden State" (how ironical). I'll sell photocopies :-) Sorry, no hot
babe.

Blayne "chiphead" Puklich <puk...@plains.nodak.edu> beat me to "UNIX" by
2-3 months (he got it in about Feb '91) so his white Chevy Blazer sports
that plate.

Last summer I spotted the Minnesota UNIX plate in the Cray Research
parkinglot one day, but was unable to identify it's owner.

Rick Tett of Tandem Computers in Austin, TX, had the license tags
"UNIX TM".

As the originator of this now-meandering thread, I'd like to announce that
my original intention has been fulfulled - I now possess a genuine
"UNIX - Live Free Or Die" license plate. (The one from the DEC promotion,
not an actual vanity plate).

Thanks! (You know who you are)
