I was lucky enough to find an Allen Wales manual adding machine at a gun
show (in addition to the obvious wares, there's lots of really weird
stuff for sale at gun shows!) last weekend; for the price I couldn't
turn it down. So... I'm finding very little information about the
company on line (just about the only concrete information I'm finding is
that they were bought by National Cash Register in 1943). Does anybody
know anything about them? Any good sites I should be looking at?

The same site has a number of earlier machines branded Wales as well
as several postwar Allen-Wales machines. Apparently NCR kept the brand
alive into the early 1950s.

Thanks for pointing me at that site -- mine has no National branding, so
I'm guessing it's pre-1943, or at least very shortly after.

I think it's probably a Model 9. It appears identical except for
branding (and condition!) to the one in the link below; the description
on that page says the serial number plate on the 9H in the photo starts
with "9H". Mine just starts with "9" (no E or H) hence my guess. I'll
also speculate that it's likely the model 9 became the 9H when they
brought out the 9E (essentially the same machine, except the 9E is
electric while mine and the 9H are both manual).
