hi folks,

i sent the following to about 40 users of puff.wisc.edu :

****************************************************************************

to whom it may concern,

the following is one of many usenet postings allegedly from a student
at the University of Wisconsin. there has been some question as to
the authenticity of these postings. if the whole Mading affair is
some kind of joke, there aren't many who are finding it funny. in
any case, the postings are offensive.

this message is being sent to many users of puff.wisc.edu.
please speak to the person who is posting these messages and
ask him to stop. thank you.

So Doug Ginsburg likes his reefer. That doesn't suprise me, he is a
Jew. I think Ronnie should tell this pot-smoking Jew to get his ass
out of the country and deport him to Israel, where he belongs.

Eric Mading.

These views definitely don't represent the University's.

one of the people i sent my email to was a sysadmin at wisconsin.
apparently, eric mading is a real person -- his accounts have
been removed and we won't be hearing from him for quite some
time, i think.

Could some kindly user on puff run Eric's new shell "/usr/adm/admonish/mading"
and post the results here?

Steve,

Although I strongly dislike the view Eric Mading posted
and think it was rather stupid and offensive. But the action you
took is definitely gone too far. If you don't like someone's view
it does not justify your action to shut him down. It seems to me
that you were suggesting that UW CS dept. should sensorship the post
made by their student just because it was not agree with yours.
If you find somebody's posting in alt.drugs ,or any other group which
is not accepted by the most of the society, rather offensive does it
give you the right to collect his/her posting and send it to his/her
boss and say "Hey, stop this guy posting stuff like that" ???
Your action has a very bad implication against the basic freedom we
have in this society. BTW, who made you the policeman of the net?

hi F.,

i admit that my action may have been a bit overboard, but i would probably
do it again. my intention was not to tell any sysadmins about eric's
bullshit. they already knew about the eric problem. they had been
getting 400 email complaints per day.

my intent was to inform eric's peers about his postings, so that
one (or many) of them could talk to him in person.

usenet postings are in the public domain. i simply forwarded a posting
to more public people. anyone writing something that will go in the
public domain should be prepared to see his posting end up anywhere in
that domain.

i sure don't consider myself a 'net cop' -- eric mading busted himself.
