CATV & convertor boxes! What fun!!!

Hi. I'm baaaaaack!
O.K. Here's the deal. My roommate just can't seem to understand
that the box on the top of the T.V. with all the buttons on it
is how we get out cable service.
He can't figure out that when one needs to record something with
the VCR, it's imperative that the convertor be ON THE CHANNEL I want
to record. (Unless I wire up about 50 million patch cords/splitters.)
He also does not understand the volume control idea. The box
only controls the volume from the CATV company! It adjusts the
output level to the TV (& VCR) and it needs to be all the way
at max. to record sound/stereo signals clearly.
He insists on flipping channels and adj. the volume while recording.
When he plays the tape back, he gets a play-by-play of everything
he did. WHAT AN IDIOT!
The thing is, I could try to explain to him the ideas, but he'd
NEVER understand them.
Anyone else have roommates as stupid? Please, tell me someone
does! We could put them together in a room, and see who's stupidity
kills them first!

Back in those glorious days when I did not live in a building too screwed
up to get cable I was able to program the cable box when I wanted to
record something, so that it would click on at the appropriate time -- or,
I think flip to that channel if the box was on, I can't recall though --
and no power in the universe short of disconnecting the box would change
it. Maybe your cable converter box has a similar function.
