"The Islamic apologists promote the view that no one would dislike us if we simply rid ourselves of right-wing scaremongers and stopped occupying Islamic lands. And the folks on the far right are just as convinced that things would go much better for America if we could only rid ourselves of liberals, the politically correct, and the “left-leaning media.” Not to mention homosexual plotters, abortion supporters, promoters of evolution, and godless secularists. Then there are the 9/ 11 conspiracy theorists, who want us to sic our dogs on rogue CIA agents and the Mossad. And there are the folks who believe that ISIS was created by the very same villains— the CIA and the Mossad. Both the right and the left push the notion that we can solve our problems and eliminate all threats by purging ourselves of despicable internal cancers. Both the right and the left promote the illusion that we have a button at our fingertips with which we can turn off our punishment. Both the left and right use the primitive and profoundly foul instinct that hits seven rats on a hot plate. An instinct to solve the problem of the moment by picking on someone weak and beating the bejeezus out of him. Someone in our own community.
Charlie Wilson’s War, the book that George Crile of 60 Minutes wrote after his dinner with me in 1988, says that we created al Qaeda. Yes, our politicians and our CIA, Crile implies, made al Qaeda the way that Jehovah made man out of mud. And he’s partly right. But only partly. To repeat, he neglects Islam’s nearly 1,400-year tradition of multi-continental jihad. He neglects 1,388 years of jihadism against the West. And against the rest. The rest of the world. He neglects jihadism’s nearly 1,400-year-long war against us unbelievers. And he neglects the way in which Muhammad laid jihad as a cornerstone in the architecture of worldwide Islam. He overlooks the fact that, in the words of Usama bin Abdullah al Khayyat, Imam of the Sacred Mosque in Mecca, 'The Prophet exerted maximum effort to instill the concept of Jihad deep into the hearts of his companions and his followers who were to come after him.'
Why do persistent claims that our enemies are within reveal a peculiar form of racism? Because these beliefs assume that only we omnipotent Westerners can do evil deeds. Worse, these beliefs assume that those outside of our own society are primitive pygmies, too weak to endanger us, too weak to make and to change history. This is racism in reverse! And it’s wrong. Profoundly wrong.
Militant Islam has been making history for close to 1,400 years. It has been girdling the globe and imposing its rule for six times as long as the United States has existed. And it wants to fulfill a mission— to rule the Earth. All of it. Where did militant Islam get that mission? From Muhammad. Now how we confront Muhammad’s legacy is up to you and me."
