I have the Battenkill 8/9 and have found it perfectly adequate -- perhaps a
testimony to my recent failure to tie into big fish more than a endorsement
of Orvis quality. It is solid, but reels (maybe more than rods) are an
area where price reflects quality more than taste -- good reels are
expensive, but if it saves you one nice steelhead, what's it worth?
Your only chance to get one of these reels (and most other big-name fly
equipment) below list cost is to buy it used (as I did mine, out of the
Chicago Reader classifieds). They are never discounted.
