A New Study Argues For Concealed Weapons
Carrying a gun is a danger to yourself and the general society as a
whole. Firearms have become very popular in the United States.
Firearms have also become a serious problem in the United States as
well. People carry firearms for basically three reasons, protection,
to commit a crime or for recreation. Over half of the crimes
committed that people were sent to prison for were committed with a

The average citizen carries a firearm for protection "BJS Firearms &
Crime Statistics". There is so much crime in the United States today
people fill safer with a concealed gun. They feel carrying a
concealed firearm will keep them safe from rapist, thieves, murders
and psychos. Even though this is not always the case. A lot of times
both the criminal and the victim have a gun, this leads no where.
Some studies show that the average citizen using a firearm to protect
themselves feel that if they had not had a gun someone would have
died. "Victimization involving a firearm represented 8% of the 6.3
million violent crimes of rape and sexual assault, robbery and
aggravated and simple assault." This study was very limited.
On the other hand criminals are firearm holders also. The FBI's Crime
in the United States estimated that 66% of the 15,517 murders in the
year 2000 were committed with firearms "BJS Firearms & Crime

a crime with a firearm present represented 40% of the prisoners. In
the Federal prisons inmates represents 56% prisoners committed a crime
with a firearm present. There are more criminals carrying guns then
the average law abiding citizen. I think allowing people to carry a
concealed firearm perpetuates criminal activity. Guns should be
outlawed except for the use of recreation and to use a firearm
recreationally should require some sort of rental or borrowing
program. The gun should be returned to the authorities after a
certain amount of time.
According to the National Crime Victimization Survey in the year
2000, 533,470 victims of serious violent crimes (rape, sexual assault,
robbery, and aggravated assault) stated that they faced an offender
with a firearm. There are more criminals using guns for the wrong
reason than there are law abiding citizens carrying guns to protect
themselves. Since the number of criminals outweigh the number of
citizens carrying guns for protection, it seems that carrying a
firearm for protection is really not protection at all. It is most
likely that the criminal with the gun has more experience using a
firearm than the average citizen.
