THE FIRE FIGHTERS OF LONDON
in action

CONCERNING THE PICTURES IN THIS BOOK

The collection of drawings and paintings from which a selection
has been chosen to illustrate this book have been painted in their
entirety by members of the London Fire Service, men and women.
The London Fire Service is drawn from people in all walks of
live before the war, and amongst them are a number of professional
artists, some of them well known. They have now been coordinated,
and in there spare time have placed on record for the future their
experiences in fig hting what may well be described as the greatest
fires of modern times. It is well to remember that in every picture
the fireman-artist was on duty at that particular fire at the time,
and that no picture in the whole collection has been done by anyone
who did not help in his or her way to defeat the particular fire
illustrated.
There are in all 107 paintings and drawings depicting not only
fires but the lives of the men and women in their dull moments,
their jokes, their fun--in fact, every side of the life of a very
large body of men and women who must go down in history as a
service which has at all times done its duty.
The entire collection has been sent over the pond by the British
Government. Despite the Battle of the Atlantic, Britain once again
delivers the goods to give the people of North America an
opportunity not only to see the art of war-time England, but the
work of a heroic civilian poplulation under fire. If this exhibit
does nothing more than show how the horrors of modern warfare have
failed to break the morale of the people of England, it will have
been worth while.
This exhibit of painting is now going on tour throughout the
United States and Canada.
For the benefit of those fortunate enough to view this exhibit
the following pages contain a complete list of the paintings and
their artists. 1941

VIEW OF CITY FROM THE WEST END, 29th DECEMBER, 1940. Pencil
drawing by auxiliary fireman RUDOLF HAYBROOK. This general view
was taken at about 11:30 at night from the roof of a tall building
in the Adelphi. Shown in the distance is St. Paul's and the area
of the City which suffered severely in that night largely due to
incendiary bombs.

RIVER FRONT, SEPTEMBER, 1940. Oil painting by auxiliary fireman
RUDOLF HAYBROOK. This painting shows a large fire on the Thames as
seen from the other side of the river. It shows a fireboat on the
left pumping the water on the conflagration, from which the heat
could be felt on the other side of the river.

IN THE EAST END, NOVEMBER 1940. Oil painting by auxiliary
fireman REGINALD MILLS. At the end of November, 1940, a series of
very large fires occurred in the East End of London, and to one of
thse fires went auxiliary fireman Reginald MIll, who is a member of
the Royal Society of British Artists and a well-know British
illustrator before the war.
This painting depicts a number of firemen standing on barges in
the canal. In the distance, to the right, is a large school where
another fire is starting up. It will be noticed that on the right-
hand side the wall was broken down by the firemen so that they
could get suction into the canal and thereby draw water to distance
fires, maybe two miles away. The officer directing the fire is
standing at the top of the ladder

Does anyone know where the painting of auxiliary fireman George Arthur Roberts, painted around 1941, is?
Many thanks
