What I would really like is a bluetooth "mid size" version which has a layout
identical to that of the full size keyboard, but which does not include the
numeric keypad, something I never use.
Are there others that feel as I do?

Might be some, but not me. What I want (and have heard many others
request) is the full-size keyboard in a wireless form. Wireless isn't
just for laptops. I don't like the wire snaking across my desk and
getting in the way. In fact, the way I like to position my monitor and
keyboard, the cable is just barely long enough and sometimes gets
stresses put on it.
I use the numeric keypad fairly often - almost never for entering
numbers, as it turns out, but several things use it for navigation. For
example, the newsreader I'm using right now uses it to navigate in the
visible diagram of the thread (and that is one of the best features of
this newsreader).

I frequently use the numeric pad but would happily do without it for a
version of the wireless keyboard that included a trackpad.

make it backlit and i'll buy one right now.

So it has the full size arrow keys under page up/down, etc, and full
size function keys?
Yeah, I'd love that. Though I hate the location of Fn on the bigger
keyboard, so I'd prefer that in the smaller keyboard's location.

Agreed -- wireless _anything_ isn't just for laptops, so the unavailabilty
of a wireless "desktop" version of the keyboard puzzled me from the get-go.

The suspense is killing me. :(

My only grump regarding the "full size" Apple aluminum keyboard is that on
the keys to the side of the "typewriter" keys I'd like the function and
delete keys to be swapped so that the delete backward and the delete forward
keys were side by side instead of, as it is now, being in separate rows.
Apple should make a full-size bluetooth WITH the numeric keypad
which is something I use every day!

And I prefer the placement of the function key on the full size Apple
alulminum keyboard as it currently is. I like the symmetry of the keys to
each side of the space bar.

Count me in for sure. Where do I sign up to pre-order one of those?

Why not use the built-in keyboard on the 17" MacBook Pro?

When I have the MacBook set so that the screen is where I would like it the
built-in keyboard is way to far away for comfort, a problem solved by using
the external keyboards. Also, when I am at home the MacBook is sitting on my
desktop and the keyboard I use in on a slide-out keyboard tray which is about
seven inches lower down, thus the MacBook is in optimal visual position and
the keyboard in optimal typing position.

If you mean the aluminum keyboard in wireless, sorry, can't help -- but
if you just mean a full-size wireless Apple keyboard, I have several of
the following and they work fine with MacBook:

I have the white Apple BT like you posted a URL to in another post.
I like the lightweigh and thin nature of the new Apple keyboard. I
am currently toting about a tethered version but I would prefer to
be able to lose the tethering.
Many people would like to see a bluetooth wireless version of the
full aluminium keyboard so why doesn't Apple want this money?

Oh, at home or office I have my MacBook placed in a dock with
connections to a 24" Apple Cinema Display, a 4-button Kensington
trackball and a proper Apple keyboard. Plus sound and an externan
fw-harddisk for Time Machine.
Otherwise, I just use the built-in keyboard.
Dock:

Connecting the four cables, power, first USB, second USB, and Firewire 800 to
my MacBook Pro takes no more than ten seconds. Almost $300 for a docking
stand seems an almost outrageous price to reduce that connection time from
ten seconds to maybe two or three seconds.

I've been tempted to get one for a while. It would stop the cables
slipping down behind the desk.

Well, it does include dvi-connection to my Apple Cinema Display. Plus
extra usb ports and one vga port.
BTW, it is also connected to such a thing:
<http://www.iogear.com/product/GCS1764/>
which let me share keyboard, display etc with up to four computers.
Indeed, it will. Unfortunately, Apple would not license the MagSafe to
BookendzDocks. But the new 24" Apple Cinema Display comes with a MagSafe
outlet [and built-in iSight camera] reducing the need for an extra
MagSafe. But it had been easier had the dock been equipped with such
one.
> Unfortunately, Apple would not license the MagSafe to

they won't license it to anyone. it's really stupid.
Yes;-(.
Also, it is stupid that they don't allow access to the Calendar and
Clock/Alarm APIs in the SDK for the iPhone ;-(:
Well, I do find iCal beneath contempt, especially the one for iPhone. I
use Pocket Informant instead - but it has to synchronize through Google
Calendar [caledar items] and ToodleDo [tasks]. On Mac BusyCal might
evolve into something similar.
>make it backlit and i'll buy one right now.
I've read others wanting this. It just shows how different we all
are.

I have a Rain Design's mStand. It's a bit expensive for just a
chunk of aluminum, but it's way way cheaper than those bookendz
docks and does exactly what I wanted it to do (MBP in use with
external kbd, mouse, display).
