ok, i'm clearly dealing with a pro... here's a quiz of drum brakes for
earlier (pre-disc brake) racing motorcycles. i couldn't identify them, but
the engineering on several was awesome... :-))

Right, the guy wants make *and* model but the best I can do is make - in
some cases. The only one hundrd percent guarantee is that number seven is
a Vincent. Since they are all racing machines then there's a good chance
that it's a 500 Comet, but don't quote me on that.
Now lets speculate on a couple of others.
Number four is off of a sidecar outfit. Therefore I'm stabbing at a BMW.
Number six is Japanese and another stab. 125 Honda - from the Hailwood -
ish era.
Number one is almost certainly an MV (colour of fork tubes more than
anything else). I'm betting on an Agostini 500, but hey, they all look the
same from this distance.
Number eight? Maybe a Hailwood 500 Honda. It's definitely Japanese and
that's a big brake so I'll go with that. Unfortunately number nine could
fit that description as well.
Number three looks horribly familiar. I wonder if it's a Greeves
Silverstone. Dunno.
The rest, nowhere.
The engine thing. I did an honest appraisal and I could indentify six
truthfully, but I might have gotten the Porcupine if the picture had been
a bit clearer. Very distinctive engine your Porcupine.

Don' gimme that Senor K. You had an over eager right hand is all <lol>

well, honestly, i hadn't realized how subtle the wrist motion is on a slow
take off from a dead stop. engine seemed to always be several hundred RPM
higher than i expected... of course, there IS that other possibility...
david (who needs to give Bandit a good bathing this afternoon if the
weather holds up. he is plumb filthy.... )

Well the Vincent one is so distinctive. There is no the front end like
the Vinnie. All the rest was really inspired (or not) guesswork.
I started watching at Mallory Park in about 67, went to the Isle of Man
for the first time in 68 or 9. Seen all the greats of that period up till
mid 70s when I got wed - not relevant, just coincidental I guess. Actually
I imagine that we found paying for *two* entry tickets was a bit much in
those early married days. These days I baulk at paying the price of *one*
entry ticket.
Also of course they don't use Castrol R in the engines any more, they use
some godawful synthetic stuff that has no noticable arama. The noise of a
Honda six or an MV four plus the smell of burning R has to be one of the
most intoxicating combinations known to man.

Sadly none of these worked on here. I will fire up a Windoze box and have
another stab later, but for now, have a read of this. It does a good job
of giving the feel of things back then - about eight years before me.

I've been sifting through some old slides looking for some pics that I
took at the island. I think I'm in the right area of the pile. I've found
some. I've posted a couple on picturetrail.
Sadly, one of the things about trannies is the exposure has to be dead
right and the sheer smallness of 35mm slides means that a) scanning them
and enlarging tends to make them lose their sharpness (not sure why since
the idea is to project them onto a huge screen) and b) the dust shows up
like cannonballs. Still if you can see through all that, they're on
http://www.picturetrail.com/mikef in a folder called Bike Slides.
Nice having DSL. I can take the time to label the images.
Incidentally, my comment about exposure was because I think that the
exposure *isn't* right on these, but then it was thirty plus years ago and
it was my first 35mm camera and I had no idea what I was doing. Hey ho!

sensitized me to the beauty of classic drum brakes. this is a photo of a
1951 norton manx and it looks like pure art in steel. beautiful.

ok, ok... it's yours. consider it my early christmas gift to you... but
don't start whining in december when i don't send chocolates... :-))
david (i remember in early '50's when the U.S. was trying to establish
motorcycle racing rules... they were very parochial... one rule for norton
manx's, one for harley 750's and one for brit "thirty fifties" as they were
called at the time. the harley's with 50% more engine size were allowed to
compete with the smaller brit bikes... but the racy norton manx was somehow
'restricted'... seems like (in my opinion) that the intent was for harley
bikes to win. i'm glad we don't have that prejudice today... )
