I have long been a fan of KoKo, the gorilla who has learned sign
language. Well, just today, I received permission to paint a water
color of her to send to her and the gorilla foundation! I am so
excited. She is an amazing animal!

Janie,

I'm so excited for you I'm just going ape over your assignment. Could you
take a picture when it's done and let us see it?

COMMENT#1:

I think it would be *more* exciting if Koko took a picture of Janie posing in
front of the easel.

COMMENT#2: (Actually a question):

Don, isn't it difficult eating a banana while prone?

COMMENT#3:

Seriously Janie, congratulations!

I'll be doing this painting from a picture. I would love to meet KoKo
but, even if I flew to California, they don't let many people see her.
Gorillas are prone to all our cold and viruses and I consider Koko a
national and world treasure. I wouldn't ever want to see her get sick.
But, who knows, maybe someday I will get to meet her. In the future,
Koko, Michael and Ndume, the two male gorillas in the project, will be
to to Hawaii where 70 acres of land has been donated to them. I think
her friend and researcher, Penny Harrington, has such a wonderful job.
KoKo is amazing. She's so smart and funny. I watched a video of her
asking her what she thought about Michael, the beautiful male gorilla
that lives with her an Ndume. She signed,
"Michel...devil...Koko...good." She plays hide and seek with her
gorilla friends, hiding under a blanket or sticking her head in a
wastebasket, like no one can see her. She has such a variety of
emotions. And she looks so wise. I just think she's wonderful!

Hi Janie,
What a wonderful order you got. Seems to me very difficult to paint in
watercolour. Never done this, however always intending to learn it.
Never see KOKO. Can I look on the Web for KOKO ?
I hope you'll succeed in it and maybe a picture of him we can see how
you did this.

Hi RLloyd,

Nope, no sarcasm intended at all. Just monkeying around a little. Notice
Janie' later post where she said that Gorilla's are PRONE to human
illness's.

I also didn't know Janie was an artist. To do something like this in
watercolor is most difficult. It is one medium I love, but stay away from
when I paint.

I'm sorry that you think I "slip in" sublime sarcasm. I try to make it
quite apparent.

I wish I could meet KoKo but it isn't possible. But, Toddy had an
interesting point. As accident prone as I am, maybe it's a good idea I don't
get around gorillas! hahaha
