Marine General's Blunt Comments Draw Fire
Some Audience Members Clap

SAN DIEGO -- At a panel discussion in San Diego Tuesday, a top Marine
general tells an audience that, among other things, it is "fun to shoot some
people."

Are you?

Lorraine

Marine General's Blunt Comments Draw Fire

The comment, made by Lt. Gen. James Mattis, came in reference to fighting
insurgents in Iraq. He went on to say, "Actually, its a lot of fun to fight.
You know, it's a hell of a hoot. I like brawling."

"You go into Afghanistan, you got guys who slap women around for 5 years
because they didn't wear a veil," Mattis continued. "You know, guys like
that ain't got no manhood left anyway. So it's a hell of a lot of fun to
shoot them."

About 200 people gathered for the discussion, held at the San Diego
Convention Center. While many military members laughed at the comments, a
military expert interviewed by NBC 7/39 called the comments "flippant."

"I was a little surprised," said Retired Vice Adm. Edward H. Martin. "I
don't think any of us who have ever fought in wars liked to kill anybody."

Mattis also discussed operational tactics of the war, calling on military
members not to underestimate the capacity of terrorists.

Mattis leads Camp Pendleton's 1st Marine Division in Iraq. He is in charge
of the Marine Corps combat development and is based in Quantico, Va.

It's been on television (CNN) all afternoon. I honestly think that this man
should be court martialed for murder.
And if this is a sample of your generals what are the rest of them like?
I understand that the matter is now closed so he won't even be disciplined
but if this would have happened in another country with another general
making the same remarks about Americans, your president would have already
been dropping bombs on that country!

A tempest in a tea pot, people. It's just bar room braggadocio.

Feb 3, 3:09 PM (ET)

By Will Dunham

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - A senior U.S. Marine Corps general who said it
was "fun to shoot some people" should have chosen his words more
carefully but will not be disciplined, military officials said on Thursday.

Lt. Gen. James Mattis, who led troops in Iraq and Afghanistan, made the
comments at a conference Tuesday in San Diego.

"Actually it's quite fun to fight 'em, you know. It's a hell of a hoot.
It's fun to shoot some people. I'll be right up front with you, I like
brawling," said Mattis.

"You go into Afghanistan, you got guys who slap women around for five
years because they didn't wear a veil," Mattis said during a panel
discussion. "You know, guys like that ain't got no manhood left anyway.

So it's a hell of a lot of fun to shoot them."

In a statement, Gen. Michael Hagee, commander of the Marine Corps,
praised Mattis as "one of this country's bravest and most experienced
military leaders."

"While I understand that some people may take issue with the comments
made by him, I also know he intended to reflect the unfortunate and
harsh realities of war," Hagee said.

"I have counseled him concerning his remarks and he agrees he should
have chosen his words more carefully," Hagee added.

Maj. Jason Johnston, a Marine spokesman at the Pentagon, said Hagee did
not plan any disciplinary action against Mattis. Johnston declined to
provide details of how Hagee had counseled Mattis, calling it a private
matter.

At a Pentagon briefing on Thursday, Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld
said he could not comment on the remarks, but Gen. Peter Pace, vice
chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, praised the general as having set
a stellar example for troops in his service abroad.

Mattis is commander of the Marine Corps Combat Development Command at
Quantico, Virginia, south of Washington.

You gotta be kidding. Do you think we pick male librarians to lead troops

If I had to go to war, I'd want to follow General George S. Patton, a pure

I pinched this from a Marine.
~~~~~~~~~
A Marine as seen by:
Himself:
A handsome, buff, highly trained professional killer and female idol
who carries a finely honed K-Bar, wears a crisp 8-point cammie cover
and is
always on time due to the absolute reliability of his Seiko digital
watch.
His Wife:
A stinking, gross, foul mouthed lovable bum who arrives back at home
every few months with a seabag full of dirty utilities, a huge Seiko
watch, an oversized knife, a filthy hat and hornier then hell.
Headquarters Marine Corps:
A drunken, brawling, HMMWV-stealing, woman-corrupting "cumshaw artist"
who wears a Seiko watch, an unauthorized K-Bar and a squared-away
cover.
His Commanding Officer:
A fine specimen of a drunken, brawling, HMMWV-stealing,
woman-corrupting bullshitter with an incredibly accurate Seiko watch, a
finely honed razor sharp K-Bar and a salty cammie cover.
What others have said:
Congress:
Marines are overpaid, overrated tax burdens who are indispensable since
they volunteer to go anywhere at any time and kill whoever they're told
to kill, as long as they can drink, brawl, steal HMMWVs, corrupt women
and sing dirty songs while wearing cammies, oversized knives, Seiko
watches and really screwed-up 8-point covers that don't look like the
Army's.
Ronald Reagan, former President of the United States:
"Some people live an entire lifetime and wonder if they've ever made a
difference in the world. Marines don't have that problem."
General Douglas MacArthur, US Army:
". . . these Marines have the swagger, confidence and hardness that
must have been in Stonewall Jackson's Army of the Shenandoah. They
remind me of the Coldstream Guards at Dunkirk."
Admiral Chester Nimitz, US Navy, on the Marine Corps' battle for Iwo
Jima:
"Uncommon valor was a common virtue"
General Douglas MacArthur, US Army:
"I have just returned from visiting the Marines at the front. There is
not a finer fighting organization in the world!"
LtCol T R Fehrenbach, USA, in "This Kind of War":
"The man who will go where his colors go without asking, who will fight
a phantom foe in a jungle or a mountain range, and who will suffer and
die in the midst of incredible hardship, without complaint, is still
what he has always been, from Imperial Rome to sceptered Britain to
democratic America. He is the stuff of which legends are made. His
pride is his colors and his regiment, his training hard and thorough
and coldly realistic, to fit him for what he must face, and his
obedience is to his orders. As a legionnaire, he held the gates of
civilization for the classical world ... today he is called United
States Marine."
An Anonymous Canadian Citizen:
"Marines are about the most peculiar breed of human beings I have ever
witnessed. They treat their service as if it was some kind of cult,
plastering their emblem on almost everything they own, making
themselves up to look like insane fanatics with haircuts so short as to
be ungentlemanly, worshipping their Commandant as if he was a god, and
making weird animal noises like a band of savages. They'll fight like
rabid dogs at the drop of a hat just for the sake of a little action
and are the cockiest SOBs I've
ever known. Most have the foulest mouths and drink well beyond man's
normal limits, but their high spirits and sense of brotherhood set them
apart and, generally speaking, of the United States Marines with whom
I've come in contact, are the most professional warriors and the finest
men I've had the pleasure to meet."
General John J "Black Jack" Pershing, US Army:
"The deadliest weapon in the world is a Marine and his rifle!"
General Mark Clark, US Army:
"The more Marines I have around the better I like it!"
General Johnson, US Army:
"I can never again see a United States Marine without experiencing a
feeling of reverence."
Richard Harding Davis, war correspondent (1885):
"The Marines have landed, and the situation is well in hand."
A Marine Drill Instructor at Parris Island:
"Did you come here just to spoil my beloved Corps, maggot?"
A boot camp weapons coach:
"To a Marine, happiness is a belt-fed weapon."
LtCol Oliver North, USMC (ret):
"The only people I like beside my wife and kids are Marines."
MajGen J N Mattis, CG, 1st MarDiv - Iraq, March 2003:
"You are part of the world's most feared and trusted fighting force.
Engage your brain before you engage your weapon. Share your courage
with
each other as we enter the uncertain terrain north of our Line of
Departure. Keep faith in your comrades on your left and right and
Marine
Air overhead. Fight with a happy heart and a strong spirit. For the
mission's sake, our country's sake and the sake of the men who carried
the Division's colors in past battles -- who fought for life and never
lost their nerve -- carry out your mission and keep your honor clean.
Demonstrate to the world there is 'No Better Friend, No Worse Enemy'
than a United States Marine."
Eleanor Roosevelt - 1945:
"The Marines I have seen around the world have the cleanest bodies, the
filthiest minds, the highest morale, and the lowest morals of any group
I have ever seen. Thank God for the United States Marine Corps."
You do have a way with words JD, what if that do gooder was the very
person to save your life?
Not sure I go along with the description of do-gooder, although I am
sure some must be just as you describe, most of the male do-gooders I
know are neither limp wristed or politically correct, and could knock
your block off in a second.....and a good many females too. so go easy
on the generalisations......Lots of do-gooders here too dontcha know....
That General is an insult to the uniform....
Very stirring! But, surely a Marine General can be expected to have the
Yes, he should have. It was NOT the right audience for such comments.
But, and I say this with all due respect, the civilian world NEVER
understands the military attitude towards combat. It's ugly. It's not
philosophical. And civilians SHOULD be shocked when they are faced
with the realities of combat. But we should strive to stop war, not
take offense at ill-timed comments made in the wrong place, to the
wrong audience, by a man whose business is combat.
When drug addicts tell their stories to non-users, the listeners are
horrified at the depravity they hear described. They cannot believe it
could ever happen to them. (and it could, and it does) And they DO NOT
understand. Same with combat. The depravity horrifies you (civilians)
but, if you ain't BEEN there, you'll NEVER understand. Let us stop
war. Thank God for the US Marines until we do.
Thanks Wolfie. My father was a Marine in WWII. He was proud of that
the rest of his life. His gravestone has the government plaque in
brass on it stating his rank and that he was a MARINE! :-) He was 29
years old when he joined, too old for the draft, leaving behind a
wife, a mother and mother-in-law of whom he was the sole support, a 4
yr. old daughter and a five month old daughter because his country
needed him. That's what a Marine is all about.
I can't see why anybody be surprised to hear the man speak as he and many of
his fellows have been seen to be doing. Given that he's made it to the rank
of General and an active command and he is not being disciplined, it seems
reasonable to take him as a measure of what the US wants of its soldiers
these days and what the world can expect of them.
But these American Generals mouth off more like Nazi generals than the
Generals of the Second World War.
And Patton was not one of America's finist generals. Calling one wounded GI
a coward because he didn't die fighting.
You're wrong, Bobbie, as usual. That General is someone to be looked up
ever save anyone's life because they wouldn't be there in the first
Going to war and winning are wo different things. It's rather patheic when a
large group armed with modern arms are being out-foxed by irregulars armed
only with weapons left over from the Vietnam war.
words. But when you see how Saddam's soldiers mistreated the
citizens, I think I understand that there could be a certain pleasure
in giving back to them what they have done to others. A sort of
revenge if you will.
Our troops kill for revenge?, I do sincerely hope not.
What Saddams soldiers did to Iraqi citizens was appalling, yet the
Powers that be sat by while our soldiers were doing just as appalling
things it to untried citizens too.....and I hate to think of anyone
deriving pleasure in killing unless of course they are
psychopaths....and I am sure there are few of those too...
I try to avoid comment on the matter, but I DO grow weary of hearing how
wonderful the Marines are. Most of it comes under 'urban legend', as the
Marines are no better or worse than the main branches of service who just go
about their business without all the hoopla and unvarnished bullshit. I
blame Hollywood and their gullible fans....
That's a mighty short list, innit. The rest is silly philosophizing that
shows why women are never chosen for combat leadership roles.
Don't get me wrong - I love women in general. They just have NO place in
combat.
I'm almost tempted to say "Rubbish" not about the women in combat but
your sneaky way of getting out of accepting that it is perfectly
feasible for a gay to Command....Got nothing to do with my
philosophising......and anyway I don't accept that women are not chosen
for combat leadership, show me. go on show me where it says woman can't
Command...
I didn't make the dizzy heights of Acting P.O. W.R.N.S. for nuttink my
man....next stop a Battle Cruiser.....;-)
Baba, Respectfully, I am, to some extent, in agreement with you here.
However, I wonder if the net result of ones moral convictions being so
severely challenged, as they certainly are in war, would be
degeneration. How many people have ever really had their beliefs
challenged? And I do not refer to verbal challenges or debates. We
all like to THINK we know ourselves. I believe it would be mistaken
to assume that someone who has experienced combat is more war-like
and/or more corrupt morally than an "unblooded" person. Frankly, quite
the opposite often seems to be the case. It is the morally deficient
non-combatents that bring us to the battlefields.
My personal military experience proved to me that male homosexuals have no
place in the barracks. Your experience may vary....
Notice I didn't say women can't command. I said they have no place in
combat - big difference, isn't it?
What did he say was wrong? We are killing those bastards because we are
in a war.
