Now, I was called and told this. "The Best of Show you saw was for the
youth division. The Ribbon for the best of show in the adult division
has not arrived yet so it has not been put on the Adult Division picture
that won. And the big Rosette Blue Ribbons usually put on the pictures
have not arrived yet so we have to use small ones til they come in."
I just laughed. It's just an art show, I realize that. But those things
submitted were "pieces of people". I know my heart just fell when I saw
the Best of Show ribbon on a picture that a child did. Bu they did not
explain, "Oh, this is YOUTHS division Best of Show." All anyone would
believe is that that was the best picture of the show.
Boy, they really screwed up this year. Their biggest screw up was not
dividing youth and adult division. I've entered every year and have
never seen it organized as poorly as it was this year. Oh well!

It seems more than a pinch of salt is needed to accept that phone call !!!
Wasn't there a deadline to get your work in for judging ?
Very odd <g>

Sometimes things that are ordered aren't delivered on time. Sometimes
they weren't ordered soon enough. I think it's more than possible, but
a darned shame, that they didn't arrive in time for the fair.

I read your post wrong Janie, I thought some of the work hadn't arrived, not
the ribbons... sorry.
Though I do wonder if they were waiting for someone 'special' :-((

I will say the Fair has been very nice about it. The chair person called
me and we talked quite a bit. I told her that I had seen entrees dwindle
over the year but this years, it was ridiculous. She said,"We can't MAKE
people enter their thing." I said, "You publicize the rides and the
animals but never the arts and crafts. You don't even put signs up that
there ARE Arts and Crafts. If you would do that, you would get A LOT OF
THINGS." I told her I understood about the ribbons because that kind of
stuff happens. It's understandable. But I told her you NEVER mix Adult
art with Youth art and expect them to compete. I worked all year long
and lost out to an 8 year old that made something from a kit.
She said that the Best of Show ribbon I saw was for Youth and the one
for adults Best of Show hadn't arrived yet. I said, "Mam, don't pull my
chain. The volunteers did not receive any direction this year and the
person running it was not an artist and had no experience in this. (I
just barely buy the ribbon story)."I said, "Why was there a Best of Show
ribbon for youth and not adult? And why did I have to compete with an 8
year old? It was REALLY messed up this year."
I think next year may be a lot different because of this. I sure hope so.

There are a lot of unanswered questions its year, Toddy. Over the years,
when lots of people entered, it was very political and it was always a
member of the "clique" running it that won Best of Show. They always won
in candy making and cakes to. But, I just kept entering and hoping. But
this was the worst year of all!

May I speak out here...not to cause any hard feelings but am just
looking at this fair business at a different angle.
Hooray for the 8 year old that received best of show...whether it be
from a kit, from an imagination or from someone actually helping the
child. This definately shows that someone has put some very positive
thoughts and instruction into this mere child. HooRay!!!!
So many times children try so very hard and never get any recognition to
which they finally become despondant not caring of their performances in
what they are contributing to.
We can assume there wasn't any directions to the volunteers in how they
made their awards. Goodness, maybe even they didn't know there was an
adult division separate from a child's division. They may have when
choosing the best of show considered the "art piece, the age" and
determined for young in-experienced hands this was absolutely amazing.
Then again maybe someone else did the work and entered it under the
child's name and age, but regardless....it will make such an impression
on this young child and this will remain with her until her end of life.
These are the incentives that need to be handed out to produce dreams
and goals for our future generations.
Janie, you have received many rewards in your life, if not from the
shows you entered into, from this group! You have mastered your art and
its interruptation even having your work shown, placed and prized into
other people's homes and life. Your neighbor's have raved over your
beautiful flower garden. These compliments, these gestures are far more
valuable the prestigious than anything you could have ever received
for your art work. Bathe in these rewards, as you are truly an artist
of importance and graciously pass other acknowledgements of society's
volunteers to credit and mentor the up and coming artist's of our
tomorrows. Your work at the fair encourages many that you never
realize, without a ribbon, without a notation, without - to give the
incentives to others changing their dreams into goals of fulfilling
their artistic desires.

Janie, your story parallels something that happened here some years ago.

There was a poetry contest in the newspaper. All schoolchildren were
encouraged to enter an original poem. A lot of entries were printed
before the final winner's poem, and all sounded very original. The poem
that won was one I had memorized in childhood, had been published before
in a book, and had been recited in school. The judges should have
known. I wrote the newspaper a letter and cited the original, and said
I thought that was unfair to all the other children who had entered. I
got a letter back saying that it is hard to tell what is and what is not
original. But the contest was never repeated in subsequent years, to my
knowledge. And the newspaper adopted a policy of not printing any
poems.
