Growing business brings couple full circle
They buy Mount Airy plant where they once worked

MOUNT AIRY - Alicia and Gabriel Torres moved to Mount Airy from a
small town near San Luis Potosi, Mexico, in 1986. They were looking
for work in the tobacco fields.

They spoke no English, and by 1988 had found jobs at Spencer's Inc.
Infants and Children's Wear, where they worked for nine years making
baby blankets. They deposited money into a savings account, only
spending enough for food, rent and other basic needs.

The couple were making enough to get by, Alicia Torres said, but
wanted more for their growing family. They eventually would have four
children, and wanted a house and a better car, she said.

So, in 1997, Gabriel Torres quit Spencer's to buy his own business.

With the $10,000 they had saved, he bought a carport business from a
man in Mount Airy and hired one helper.

He and his helper did everything - sales, manufacturing and
installation. A few months later, Alicia also quit Spencer's. They
called the business Eagle Carports Inc. and put nearly all the profits
back into the business to make it grow, hiring more people and
expanding into different states.

Slowly, the tiny business they ran out of a mobile home in Mount Airy
began to take off.

"I think when he started working, he never stopped working," Alicia
Torres said of her husband. "Even though sometimes he would have a
little bit of problems, he never stopped. We went forward. That has to
do with success. You will never say no. You just go forward."

Last month, the Torreses did something they never dreamed they would.
They bought the baby-blue, brick Spencer's building just off U.S. 52
where they had both worked and saved. They have plans to open their
eighth manufacturing plant next year inside the empty textile plant.
According to the tax stamp on the deed, they paid $700,000 for the
property.

Spencer's pulled out of Mount Airy last spring as four other textile
plants were also closing. Altogether, 1,000 people were left without a
job. Spencer's was a homegrown business begun in the 1940s and once
was the largest employer in town, with as many as 1,000 employees. But
in 2006, it began to sell its inventory, and this year, it quit making
infants and children's clothes all together.

"Most of the folks here are real happy to see something going into
this vacant, empty building," Mayor Jack Loftis said.

For the Torreses, it's a dream come true.

"I asked my husband, 'When we were working so hard and making a little
bit of money just to live, did you ever think you would be the owners
of this building?SSRq" Alicia Torres said. "I never thought we would....
It's a good feeling."

They eventually moved the business from Mount Airy across the state
line to Cana, Va., off a busy stretch of U.S. 52. There was already a
single-wide mobile home on the property, which they bought from
another carport dealer, Torres said.

Five years ago, the couple became U.S. citizens.

About three years ago, they built a two-floor office building in Cana.
Though the couple had started with the money they had saved and then
used profits to expand, this time they borrowed money from a bank,
Torres said. They have also borrowed money to expand to other states.

Today, Eagle Carports is a multimillion-dollar business with six other
manufacturing plants in California, New Mexico, Texas, Georgia,
Tennessee and Pennsylvania.

The company expects to make an initial investment of $300,000 to
$500,000 in the 132,000-square-foot Spencer's building as it adds
equipment and make improvements.

Eagle Carports is headquartered in the office building in Cana, where
about 50 employees work in the office and in manufacturing. The
largest facility is in Nacogdoches, Texas, where 20 people work making
the roofing, framing and other parts for the carports. There are five
other plants in California, New Mexico, Georgia, Tennessee and
Pennsylvania.

The company employs a total of about 800 workers and sells through
dealerships in 30 states.

Across North Carolina and the nation, small businesses such as Eagle
Carports is where growth is at, economists say.

"Small businesses are often where new innovations and new services are
developed," said Michael Walden, an economics professor at N.C. State
University. "Simply put, big businesses start out as small businesses.
Small businesses are also easier to start, so they provide a gateway
for fresh entrepreneurs."

And historically, small businesses have been vital for immigrants as a
way to move up the economic ladder, Walden said.

Alicia Torres says that the growth comes from perseverance.

"We were always hard-working people. We weren't afraid to work," she
said. "We are grateful to this country. This country has given us more
than we could dream about."

Neither has any formal education. Alicia Torres, 38, finished middle
school in Mexico. Gabriel Torres, 45, completed six years of
elementary school before going to work for his father manufacturing
plastic grocery bags.

Gabriel Torres was in his early 20s when he decided to go north to the
United States. An older brother, Benny, had come to Mount Airy and had
told him about the small town and that it was a good place to live and
work.

Later, Gabriel Torres went back to Mexico and made a return trip to
Mount Airy with his wife.

They began working at Spencer's about the same time as Benny Torres
did.

Benny Torres was the first to get into the carport business. Benny
bought several carport dealerships about a month before Gabriel and
Alicia, from the same man.

Benny Torres' company, TNT Carports, is also thriving with several
plants in other states, as well as dealerships throughout the United
States.

Alicia Torres calls it a friendly competition.

Recently, Gabriel and Alicia Torres have created a spinoff company
called USA Steel Buildings, which makes the same carports and storage
buildings but will be owned by their 21-year-old son, who is still in
college. USA Steel Buildings has manufacturing and sales in Florida,
Georgia, California and Arkansas.

They have three other children: a 15-year-old boy who is in high
school, a 9-year-old girl who is in elementary school and an 8-month-
old boy.

The Torreses' carports and buildings range in price from $695 for a 18-
by-21-foot carport to as much as $50,000 for a 40-by-100-foot storage
building.

A few years ago, Eagle Carports sold and installed a storage building
at an airport in Connecticut. They also sold a 12-by-26-foot building
that was installed at President Bush's ranch in Crawford, Texas.

"I remember that order because we saw the name on the ranch," Alicia
Torres said. "It was for his bodyguards, for one vehicle."

The company manufactures the pieces for each carport or building at
its plants, and then puts it together on location.

The expansion into the old Spencer's building is still being
discussed. The family knows that there will be manufacturing but is
still deciding whether its offices will also be moved there.

Eagle Carports will hire workers for its new plant in Mount Airy, but
it's not clear yet how many, said Tim Gammons, the company's general
manager.

Gammons smiles when he tells the story of how he also used to work at
Spencer's. He was with the company about 25 years, he said. He left
five years ago to work at Eagle Carports.

"I used to be Gabriel's boss," Gammons said. "He used to work for me.
Now, I work for him."

Doesn't say whether they immigrated legally or illegally.
If they came legally, God bless and congratulations on their success.

NO...... that's not the REAL question. Historically most all first
generation immigrants were not documented in the US.
The right wing white racist use the word "illegal" to promote their
real agenda of racisim (or specically their fear some red indian
decendent will mitigate their power). It's baseless but its their
fear.

That's a very nice story, Richard. What you failed to even note was the
fact that they were LEGAL immigrants, not a couple of lwbreakers who
broke into the country. That is not such an unusual story when you look
at the LEGAL immigrants into the country. What you can't seem to fathom
is the fact that those who come here ILLEGALLY are CRIMINALS, not worthy
of doing well. Get real, jerk.

the country's immigration system was set up those who chose to come into
the country without going through the proper process became criminals.
Try doing that (please!) down in Mexico and see what happens. Their
immigration laws are far stricter than ours will ever be and they aren't
right wing, white OR racist. You are not telling the truth, as usual,

Nobody"s straining to make any case, except you, you pathetic excuse for
an American. The fact that they were immigrants of the legal variety
just makes my point that immigrants are hard working people. I have no
question about that. The question arises from your persistent yammering
about all immigrants, legal and otherwise, being hardworking. That has
absolutely NOTHING to do with anything. The question is whether they
chose to do things legally or to violate our laws and demonstrate their
contempt for this country by their actions. Of course, a bleeding heart

first. Faith's mini-bio is mostly true, but I'm no saint. I do get
frustrated occasionally. I don't really bite, but my style might seem
sometimes confrontational when I'm just being me which is not to try and
take things too seriously, or, at the very least, see a humorous side.
And, I still believe that how or why are always good questions. How else
to learn and grow, or, God forbid, change your mind and conceptions, or
someone else's...

Maybe the car was already here if stolen.

Very well, if you insist that I called you a name, consider it so! You
have not seen name calling yet. Your "question" was phrased in such a
manner as to intimate that you were in possession of knowledge beyond
that which you actually had and were insulting JD. If you were not,
then so be it. When I first joined this group, many years ago, I had
the good common sense to sit back and watch other posts before making
comments. If you wish to stay here, that's great. Just don't be too
thin skinned about what people say to you or you are likely to not be
happy. It can get rather viscious around here at times and if you are

Yep, a real shame. There is a debate over here as to whether the
cops tactic of chasing stolen cars is justified, in view of the risk to
life and limb of innocent bystanders.

Folk have been killed due to cop car chases in the UK, and it just ain't
worth it, nor is it worth the life of a pet animal.

Sorry, I did not see the other post explaining where you live. As mostly
every regular here knows, I live close to the border of Mexico and have
some property even nearer to the border. While many people hundreds and
even thousands of miles away make flippant remarks about the mexican
invasion of our soil, we continue to have severe problems here with the
criminal element that runs in and out of mexico. Nobody seems to give a
damn about that. Also, please consider the enormous illegal alien
problems in the city of L.A. and surrounding cities.

The car being chased by the cops was from the state of Nuevo Leon,
country of Mexico. I live on a quiet country road that has a 40MPH limit
and it's generally not considered a road one would "accidentally"
travel. There is NO QUESTION whatsoever that the operator(s) of that
vehicle were of the criminal element otherwise they'd not have been
traveling at a high rate of speed trying to get away from the cops. In
fact, this has become very common and is at epidemic proportions now.

We had an incident here that didn't generate any affection for Latinos.

A carload, driven by youngish male Mexican came around a stopped school
bus and killed a little 7yo girl as she stepped out. .

After much debate it was decided to make them get driver's licenses
marked For Driving ONly, not ID On the theory they would have to learn
out driving laws and what the shape of the road signs meant.

Then more debate when it was discovered aliens from all over (N Y C
etc) were coming here to get driving licenses. Then a DL office clerk
died under very mysterious and suspicious circumstances, fiery car.
Further debate. I think now they stopped the DLs.

Since Ignorance of the law is no excuse, what difference does it make?
Illegals don't care about th law as evidenced by their illegal entry.

How do you feel about the thousands of US jobs that are lost with the
removal of Levis manufacturing facilities to non-US locations?

Well that's OK then. You wont be too worried by the number of lost jobs.

Yes. It's sad what our "Global Economy" has become. They claim everyone
wins, but it seems to mostly be a ploy for 3rd and 4th vacation homes
for the "Captains of Industry"....

That is not what I said at all, I didn't like the product so never bought
myself any, my boys did and I sure brought a lot of them over the years.
Don't try to make something that wasn't there.

I've heard a alot of wimmen say Levis aren't cut right for them. I
wore the same style boot cut 517s for YEARS and had no complaint.
Once they went out of country, the fit is completely different. I'm
no longer a Levi's customer.

Oh, yes...I totally agree, especially in comparison to what I wore in
high school. They say they use the same weight fabric for their 501s
but it's just not true. The ones you could buy in '66 for $4.95/pair
would stand in the corner on their own. They were so stiff when new
you could barely bend your knees. Not so anymore...not for a long
time. I had overlooked the aspect of having to clothe children. Nice
to be that far removed from that reality. Kinda sorta. ;-]

Some Wranglers are still made here. Look for the label that says so.
I've worn Wranglers since the late 80's because they seemed to fit
better that the Levis I knew as a younger man. The 501's and later the
517's were my only choice in jeans.
