When and why were you speaking on TV? Or are you just alluding to
someone who had them in the background?

I've noticed it's the standard backdrop for pols, lawyers, doctors,
educators, and all other types that want you to think they really know
what they are talking about.

Have you noticed that if it's written in a book, even hand written,
everybody will believe even the worst of lies?
Yeah, I guess you have noticed.

Richard, I have a great idea for you. I got it when I went to an art
exhibit in an anti-bellum home that a lawyer had just renovated for his
office near downtown.
On the first floor, he had his office and the art exhibit, and a combo
playing, and wine and cheeses.
Being of the IN group, some of us went upstairs to see the renovation of
the second floor. He had a whole wall of books--but they were only the
spines of some the designer had bought at the flea and cut. There was
ornate molding where the edge of shelves would have been. The books had
been cut off about 3 inches from the spine, so they would all be the
same width, and fitted in to look like bookcases with books in them.
Then, for a surprise, there was one place where a piece of rope stuck
out. He pulled it, and part of the wall twisted and a opened like a
door, so you could go into another room.
(Maybe lawyers need this sort of thing.) Then inside the other room,
which had windows and took up the other half of the second floor, he had
an enormous poster bed and an oil painting hanging over it. It was of a
young black woman all dressed up in a ruffle-skirted dress, posed in a
very compromising position. I tried not to stare. We congratulated him
on his innovative decor and his clever designer, and went back
downstairs. Then fled.

Maybe you want to copy the book wall part? Miss Annie might like that.

Designers are a good source of sales for books you can't give away.
Those books go for a nickle apiece. Pity, as some of them are
interesting--but there isn't enough storage space for all the old books
that nobody reads any more. Youngsters think everything should be
stored on a disc, and lots of them can't read beyond sixth grade level.
It's gotten so that the best sellers are sex books, cook books and
religious books.
(BTW, I don't think I would want to hire that lawyer.)

Yeh, Richard, I got it the first time around. I think this lawyer was
supposed to be gay, and his partner was the decorator. I am guessing
that the huge oil portrait was bought from a house down on Mulberry
Street, when they tore that down during Urban Renewal--Kennedy's baby.
But, of course, it's only a guess. I was more surprised that he invited
a group in to view his private bedroom, when he could have put it in
with the rest of the art exhibit. Of course, back then, it wouldn't
have been PC to do that.

We havin' a big flap now about the final graduation exhibit at the
college of art here. One work was removed as not proper for general
viewing. Then, after the newspaper got into it, it has been put back in.
The prez of the college won't comment, the paper said-- but said he
replied in e-mail that if the newspaper would print a photo of the work
in question, he would be glad to discuss it.

Relatedly, I just heard a piece on how used book stores aren't
doing too well, and one of our good old ones is about to close its
doors. They blame the availability of books via the internet--and
the fact that people (presumably mostly younger) are just not so
book-oriented now. Sad. I love browsing through book stores and
reading books. I will never get the same visceral pleasure from
reading on some screen.

I share your pleaslure with old books, Jean. Independent new book
stores have long since yielded to the chans. But when the used book
stores can't make it, that's the end of the line.
Some of the saddest passings are the old books that describe life in
earlier years, without all the political correctness of today
interference. I think back to the Depression years, when reading was
everyone's pleasure and recreation, and writing had to be pretty good,
or nobody would buy the book, and books were cheap. I came in late on
that, but a top notch novel was maybe $4.95. People had to save to buy
one. Most passed them along to friends, and swapped out.

Makes me want to run out and save the old books single-handedly!
I wonder whether I can find some lists of books that have some
real flavor when they describe times of yore both here and
elsewhere. I love such books, and their loss would be a real
tragedy.

Going a bit farther afield, I also don't like libraries with
closed stacks. Not speaking of the really old holdings, but, say,
current NF holdings. Boy, was I unhappy to encounter this when
Leah and I were looking for some books. How on earth can you
browse through the books and find some unexpected treasure this
way? You can't. To me, that is just awful.

I think I'll stick with your interpretation for now.

My mother had a book on bee keeping from her uncle --must have dated
back to at least 1870--and I loaned it to a friend who never brought it
back, and couldn't recall borrowing it when I asked. He's dead now, so
I'll never know what happened to it

I hate the closed stacks, too. I am told that thieves will cut out rare
pictures and pages using a thread, so it's not obvious that they are
missing. Libraries are subject to shoplifting, too. You'd think
libraries could use hidden cameras and make folks wear ID's or
something. Our library has been using a scanning system for years, just
like the airport.

Ouch about that book, Blake.

Rw the libraries, we have scanners too, but they wouldn't catch
those pages. I like the idea of the cameras.

I don't know what he's talking about either. I doubt that he does.
