Brother fax machine question

We have had a Brother FAX-575 for a couple of years and we still have not
been able to get the machine to do what we want. Maybe someone here is
familiar with Brother fax machines and can help.

First of all, we have Bell Canada answering service which cuts in after 4
rings.

What we would like the machine to do is to *automatically* recognize if the
incoming message is voice or fax and to receive and print the fax without
our having to physically answer the telephone. As it is now we have to pick
up the telephone when it rings and if we hear a fax signal hang up the
telephone and the fax machine takes over. Which is no good because it means
that we cannot get faxes if we don't happen to be at home to pick up the
receiver.

Any help with the settings will be greatly appreciated. We have written to
Brother Canada Ltd. a number of times and never got a reply.
