I wanted to like it. Really.

From my posts, many of you may know that I am on a foundation quest for a
more inexpensive 'daily use' alternative to my perfect dream foundation,
Versace ECC. The latest reject is the Zia Oil free-liquid foundation. I saw
this in Whole Foods in Houston, and was intrigued as the lightest shade (0)
appeared to be a good match for my NW15 (yes I am that pale <grin>) oily
skin. The bottle was $16 for 1 ounce, not too bad. Well, I don't like this
stuff at all. The foundation turns orange on my skin, it has poor slip
quality, and it has a terrible odor! I am truly disappointed, partly because
I am getting weary of spending money on foundations, but mostly because I
really like their skincare line and I had hoped this product would be just
as great..

Back to the drawing board. Foundation suggestions welcome!!

Of course, YMMV.

Well here come my logic...
I really like both Vincent Longo's Water Canvas and Liquid Canvas and
they are about $40/$30 a pop, respectively. I figure I am actually
saving money by not buying other foundations in search of a cheaper
one. Well in theory anyway.
Yes the Versace is $40 but if you buy three more foundations at $16 in
your search that's $48 and you could have bought another Versace to
have on hand. Basically that searching adds up.

I am a W15 so I understand the pale factor in a search for
foundations. Don't know if you have checked these out but here are
some cheaper, drugstore, alternatives....
Maybelline True Illusion in True Ivory both liquid and powder. The
powder is really great for pale folks.
Maybelline True Wear in True Ivory, I think. This is a very nice pale
shade.
L'Oreal stick in Soft Ivory which I found to be a tad lighter then
their liquids.
Revlon Alabaster which I think is in the Age Defying series? not sure
Neutrogena Classic Porcelain

Then there is Shiseido Extra Light Ivory, UDSS in Apparition, Clarins
Fair Ivory, EL Enlighten in Arua, BB stick in Porcelain(why can't she
make this color in a liquid?), MAC and a few others that I can't think
of at the moment.

A really good foundation to try that's not very expensive is L'oreal's
Mattique.

Kris-
I like your theory and I have thought this several times! I just can't deal
with the thought of spending $40/month (that's $480/year!) only on
foundation on a continous basis, (given my current fun income level as a
grad student). My hope is to find something that works for everyday, and
then use the more expensive stuff as a treat - stretch it out, like I do
with my bottle of Fresh Milk Lotion. I would even pay $40 for a foundation
if it would just last a little longer than my versace does - making the cost
per use less. I expect a bottle or package of foundation to last me
generally 3 months with everday use. The search is somewhat costly, but I am
hoping that eventually I will find something that fits the bill that will
save me $ in the long run. Foolish dreams!!! When I figure it out, they will
discontinue it , pronto!!

I, too, love the Versace EC and hate the price and the fact that it uses up
so darn quickly. What I ended up doing was buying more of it at beauty.com
while the various discount codes were still valid. That means although I
bought 3 more compacts before I've completely finished my first one, I got
each of them for at least $10 off (one was for $15 off!), and was also able to
use the MC card (since my first was bought at NM, and I had to use cash there
- ugh). Now I'm stocked up at a discount, and have no excuse/reason/need to
buy others to try out.

Michele, who still went and bought the Merle Norman Luxiva powder foundation
on a whim last week <sounds of smacking myself in the head!>

My resolve not to buy this weakens every time I read another rave. And I
actually like the packaging too. :)

Ok, so what color is best for a WC Soft Beige, MAC NC15/NC20? The 2003
looks yellow enough (I cannot have pink tones in foundation and slightly
more yellow than neutral works best), but is it light enough? The
lighter shades appear too pink on eve.com, but I am not sure how
accurate those swatches are. TIA!

Well I tried, I really did but even after I wrote I thought even I
wouldn't buy that logic. *shrug*
This is what is keeping me from trying the Versace. I really, really
wish they would make it refillable. Why didn't they? This really
confuses me.
Good luck on your search Becky and if I come across any good
inexpensive foundations for us pale folks I'll let you know!

This is exactly why I decided not to buy the Versace -- I refuse to
spend so much for so little product, then not have the ability to buy
just the refill. I almost bought LBD pressed but decided it was just
too yellow, and slightly too dark, on me *sigh*. I bought the
Shiseido Liquid Compact, but have only gotten to try it once, since I
just came down with the flu and am makeup-free...

Which color did you try and what is your coloring? I have been
thinking of trying this because of the raves but I am really pale so I
am a bit leary.
Might want to try some Elderberry as well as Echinacea.

I'm NC15, very neutral-toned with quite a bit of pink in my skin, and
got the lightest shade, Fairest Ivory I believe is the name. It's
actually juuuust a bit lighter than my skin at the moment because I
did get some sun in Fla. It's not extremely yellow, and should work
well for you. It gives really nice coverage without being heavy. The
only complaint I have is the smell! It doesn't really have a scent;
it's more like this weird non-scent, if that makes any sense. Kind of
ecchy. Nevertheless, it's worth it, and topped with medium Blot
Powder the finish is flawless! Yeehah!

Oh man, I can't hear "Elderberry" without thinking of the French
Taunter from "The Holy Grail"...

"Oh, yes, it's verry nice!"

<Gulp>

Well, I bought it with my $10 off and so far I haven't seen what all
the fuss is about. It was okay but my coworker (we've both been on
the perfect foundation hunt and critique each other) thought it was a
little bit yellow (V2000).

I'm going to keep it until summer and try it when my skin's oilier.
Maybe I'm doing something wrong.

A note if you want to try the Shiseido Liquid Compact -- you can just
buy the refill for $25 to try it. I did buy the compact later (an
extra $10) but I really didn't need it since I don't take it anywhere.
The only issue with the refill is that there's no place to put the
sponge. But I'm using the foundation brush anyway.

I'm a NC15, Shiseido Very Light Ivory, Bobbi Brown Warm Ivory...etc, etc....
and I find the V2000 in the Versace EC to be **perfect** in a way none of
those quite were (though they are all pretty close and the NC15 was the
closest of all before I found Versace).

Michele, pondering a huge foundation swap-off in January now that the EC has
pretty much won my heart (and wallet)

I'm such a dork! I meant the LBD mineral powder and what color you
were trying. Doh! Sorry for not being more clear!

I bought EC months ago. Honestly, while I did like the packaging, it was just a normal powder foundation on me.
Not especially fabulous and expensive at Sing$55. I have normal skin with a shiny Tzone and it didn't leave me
matte enough.Truly a YMMV product, please don't buy without trying.

Maybelline Great Wear Foundation in Ivory is my favourite foundation (even
compared to high-end products!) It doesn't clog my pores, provides
light-to-medium coverage depending on application, and the makeup that collects
around the inside of the lid is perfect to use as concealer. HTH,
