BC seems to run in the female issue of my mother's side of the family.
Five in Mom's generation and the next generation and two of them have
had BC.
Mom had her most recent checkup last week: 4 years, 8 months (and
counting). No recurrence. She was somewhat fortunate in that she got
it when she was over 70, at that age hormonal therapy is generally
both quite effective and tolerable.
One of my cousins came down with BC after Mom did. She's had a battle
with it (surgery, radiation, at least two courses of chemo, and
hormonal therapy that bothered her) but she's still going. She has had
her share of problems over the past few years, including a horse
riding head injury that left her having seizures.

take heart: a friend of mine survived breast cancer five years ago.
they caught it early and she didn't need a mastectomy. she did
radiation, but no chemo.
be sure to ask your oncologist about Lymphedema - it's a swelling
(usually in the arm) due to pooling of lymph. usually when a
lumpectomy (or in this case, mastectomy) is performed, many of the
lymph nodes are removed as well. your lymph nodes are what circulate
lymph throughout your body. without the lymph nodes, there's no
circulation of lymph. my friend who survived breast cancer does dry
brushing on a daily basis to keep the lymph circulating. if you send
me your physical address, i can send you some information on
Lymphedema, and how to do dry brushing, and even what type of brush to
buy.
i'm hoping you have a swift recovery!

Just saw your post and David I very much appreciate your note on the
possibilities of lymphedema. Clinical studies indicate that between
25% and 48% of cancer survivors (I am one also - two lymphomas) will
develop lymphedema.
There is treatment for lymphedema that an make a dramatic difference in
the condition and your quality of life.

going through, but I can relate a particular case that I am familiar
with that will hopefully give you some comfort at this time.
A lady I once went to church with was diagnosed with the same not too
many years ago, and, of course, it was quite terrible for her when she
first learned it. However, in the following years, she had the
procedure, endured the chemo, and she has handled it all marvelously!
To the best of my knowledge, it is practically like it never happened.
Furthermore, most everyone seems to have largely forgotten that she ever
went through it in the first place. And it is all because her recovery
was so complete and she was able to camouflage the physical changes
sufficiently that she really looks no different than she did in the
past. As I understand it, such recoveries are not at all uncommon; and
I sincerely hope that it will also be the case with you that your
recovery is swift, thorough, and that any negative outcome is entirely
manageable.
Just keep your spirits up and keep treading steadily toward the day when
you will be able to look back on all of this as nothing more than a past
trial that you have since overcome.
I'll keep you in my thoughts.

Sending love and support your way! My mom is going on close to 15 years
since her masectomy, and I had a suspcicious (thankfully benign) lump
removed 10 years ago. The good news is, breast cancer survival rates
are better than ever. So hang in there. Also, on the fashion front,
there are tons of good options nowadays, so don't fret about that part
and just take care of yourself right now.
I highly recommend Dr Susan Love's "The Breast Book."

messed up her golf swing.

while I know there's no cure for her particular type of cancer I'm
finding it very helpful to get as much info/feedback regarding

Nutritional counselling
Herbal medicine consultation
Hands-on healing
Mind/body/spirit therapy (this is quite similiar to life coaching where
you approach cancer diagnosis as a real watershed and make goals and
decisions in tune with such a life changing event)
Reiki
These are all one-on-one sessions with a trained therapist and are
completely free of charge (thank you Prince Charles! This charity is
run by The Prince's Trust) These are ongoing sessions that will take
place over the entire course of my chemo and then follow up after my
surgery. In addition, I've signed up for the following group classes:
Yoga
Pilates
Qui Gong (A gentle form of Tai Chi)
All taught by breast cancer survivors...
and finally--
Support group for women 40 and younger. Apparently over 40% of the
Haven's clientele comes from this age group. Am also looking into the
guided meditation classes but don't want to overdo! Even the lunch is
free, provided by volunteers who cook meals that are totally organic
and carefully chosen to aid cancer recovery.
I can't tell you how lucky I feel having had access to this centre, as
it's made a huge difference to my state of mind already...

Even if none of this has actual theraputic value, it should keep you
amused, distracted, and occupied while awaiting the next sessions of
chemo, etc.
I'd say: drop any of it that doesn't provide sufficient entertainment
value, and go shopping instead ...

you probably don't recognise my signature, since I seldom post here
(busy, hectic life), but I have been reading alt.fashion for over 8
years, and your posts are always a pleasure to read!
Whenever I have the chance to read this group, I look for your
contributions - in particular since you've moved to England, given that
I am also in Europe (Portugal) and do not have easy access to several
american brands nor am I able to follow all american discussion topics.
I haven't read AF in a couple of weeks, and was very sad to learn your
bad news - in fact I was surprised by how much it touched me, given
that we don't know eachother in "real life", nor have we even exchanged
private mails.
All I can say is that the positive attitude and inspiration that I have
seen in your posts are the best weapons you could have. I am sure you
will handle this situation well and overcome it with the same grace you
always show.
