Creating a Make-up Artist portfolio

Dear A.fers!

Desperately needing your advice. I am a fresh-out-of-the college Make-up
Artist, ex-Beauty Editor in a major glossy. But here in Toronto I have to
start from a scratch.

What is a best way to build up a decent book of fashion shoots, as I'd like
to specialize in fashion (stills-runways-*anything*)? My instructor says I
am pretty good and definitely fashion-oriented - well, after shooting all
the backstages at major fashion weeks for 3 years in a row what else could I
be...

Anyway, is there any photographers who might be interested in make-up artist
for free - well, for pictures? Is there any place I could volunteer or
assist or apprentice?
