I went to Bloomingdale's the other day, and saw the cutest summer
dress. It was DKNY, and it was $270.00. Maybe it's just me, but I think
that is the biggest rip off. Every time I see DKNY clothes, I walk in the
other direction, because I think it's way overpriced. It's funny because
I can bring myself to buy a pair of $150.00-200.00 pair of Charles
David shoes, or a $150.00 Calvin Klein dress, but I don't think DKNY
is worth the extra $50.00- 70.00 dollars for a summer dress, or $260.00
for a pair of sandals. What makes their clothes so expensive? I'll admit
most of it is really cute, but I can't believe how much it costs!
If you know, please tell me I'd love to know!

Bloomingdale's shopper!

Get this--I was at TJMaxx last year and saw this gorgeous wild Donna Karan
jacket, MARKED DOWN to $325 from something like $825! I almost choked! I
agree--who has the money to spend on stuff like that? $825 is two month's
rent for me! Now a $150 pair of shoes is different because shoes get worn
quite a bit but not so with a dress (I had a friend who used to do the
"cost per wearing" thing--you might spend more money, but if you wear it a
lot, it costs less per wear). It's all in the name--your paying for name
recognition and prestige. They are also made better, but unless you're
buying something for the Oscars (AND you've been nominated) pretty much
everything else can be bought more cheaply--you just have to do your
shopping. For those of us who scrape by for a living, designer clothing
is merely a pipe dream. I'd love to have even 2 or 3 great, well-made
designer pieces, but unless they get marked down 90%, there's no way I'dl
be able to afford them! :-(

My personal fav is when they knock off 'street chic' DKNY did a bright orange
quilted nylon vest a few years ago for $450. The San Francisco Chronicle reported
that you could buy the same item at a military suplus store for $15. Honest to
God it looked exactly like what crossing guards wear.

When Lauren went "western" I was in the Ralph Lauren Store in SF wearing a Pendelton
Indian motif woolen jacket, turquoise and silver jeweler, boots and jeans (hey I'm
from Texas!) and the sales clerk went wild over my 'ensemble' She asked if the outfit
was 'ours' and I told her no, my jacket was A. authentic B. 100% wool and C. total cost
was less than a pair of 'their' jeans.

Even the DKNY outlet has very high prices. I bought one sweater on
sale about three years ago basically due to the label and came to the
realization that it was too oversized and bulky, truly not flattering.

You pay for the label, hon! Hate to admit it...but it's true! DKNY is a designer label......which are generally more expensive. Some think it's worth it, some don't :)

I love some of the DKNY stuff, but it's overpriced if you pay full retail.
I wait till it goes on sale. Even the outlet is high, but some of the
items are really great. Not everything, though. Some of the stuff is
very basic and not at all worth the price.

You'd have to understand that in certain economies...these prices are
considerd very reasonable and even cheap! Singapore/Indonesia and Hong
Kong for example.......the women/rich are so rich that labels like
Gucci,Chanel,Prada FLY off the shelves before they even get displayed!

I had to wait 2 mths for a Gucci shirt i ordered for US$600 and there
was a waitlist for another 35 women if i didnt want my shirt! It's true
that many women & men cannot afford to spend on designer clothes..but
then there are again many who can and Do that's why designers can
afford to stay afloat and in business. Asia is becoming progeressively
richer and people become style and stautus conscious.

For eg.... things are A LOT cheaper in the US/Europe.....

a normal prada bag is about us$800-1000 compared to about half the
price in Milan.

lipsticks are about US$25 a stick! or more!

chanel clutches are at least US$2000...and they are all sold out or
booked well in advance!

i buy loads of dkny,ck,bcbg, prada, gucci, bisou but mainly classic
non-fad items which will last me ages. more value for the money i
spend.frankly designers do make better clothing that lasts longer and
wears better so i dont mind spending more for it......
