Then, I moved on to Make Up For Ever. I thought I'd die for it. I still love
MUFE. There are still things there (e.g., Star Powder 919, blue mascara,
"naturals" palette) that I couldn't stand to live without.
But now, alas, I have found a NEW obsession. I was quite a fortunate soul, in
the right place at the right time (which oddly has happened quite a few
times... remind me to tell you how I got front row at Alan Jackson, and how I
met my ex-rock-star-luvah, yada yada yada), and I got to attend a party thrown
by Body & Soul to kick off their line at Fred Segal in Santa Monica. Stevie of
Beauty Buzz was my ticket in (sure I'm a name dropper!), and I owe her. Big
time.
The Body & Soul line is *truly beautiful.* I'll be honest -- the colors are
*great* but not necessarily anything earth shattering that hasn't been done
somewhere before (although maybe not all in the same place). It's like a small
collection of the prettiest eyeshadows and sexiest lipsticks out there.
Now, the powder -- THAT is a different story. I kid you not -- this powder
makes LeClerc feel GRAINY. I know this for sure, because LeClerc was right
behind the Body & Soul display. Well, I think LeClerc is superduper, don't get
me wrong. But wow, B&S really did impress.
I shall continue my report as time goes by. They gave me a bag of presents.
Yay!! Here's what I got:
- Nail polish in "Fortune," which is a sexy cranberry shade. I polished my
left hand, but haven't ventured to the right yet. It dried really quick and
went on nice and thick. No chips yet, but, uh, it's only been 7 minutes.
- "Perfect Face Powder" in "blonde," which looks like a great light shade that
I can wear (Miss Pasty 1999)
- Lipstick in "Jewel," which makes me look like the sexy hot momma that I am
(inside). It's vamp-ish and beautiful. Truly.
- Eyeshadow in "Diamond," which I thought was the best color they had. A
steely silvery gray.
Also in the bag was a perfume sample by "Creative Scentualization." I met the
maker and she was a charming sweet lovely person. The scent is called "Perfect
Veil" and I dig it majorly. I'm not a perfume person -- I love it but can
NEVER describe it. This one smells like Play-doh, which to me, is a GREAT
thing.
There was also the cutest thing you ever saw. A mini flower pot with little
fabric violets... and each stem is a *bobbie pin*!!! Can you STAND it!? It's
adorable. "Bobbe Pots," they call it.
To top it off, I got to step over to the custom fragrance blending area at Fred
Segal and the sexiest girl I ever saw mixed me up a little vial of whatever I
wanted. Purr! I got a mix of "China Musk" and "Devon Violet" and it smells
just like that weird violet gum... some people do NOT like, but I luuuvvvvv!!!
Now, I would be remiss if I didn't mention the PACKAGING. Body & Soul has some
big hit products, sure, but the packaging is truly stunning. This is one for
everyone who adores girly beautiful sexy fabu smashingness. Bettie Page is
recalled, somehow. Each little package is special.... the eyeshadow is in a
metal pot and the powder is a big flat plastic disc... both in aqua, with
glamorous "vintage" style paintings atop. The lipstick is brushed steel with a
keyhole pattern on top, and the nail polish is in a skinny little oval bottle
with a silver lid. Tooooo beautiful. You'd be very proud to whip this out at
any social gathering. I always thought MAC had nice, sexy packaging. This
puts it to shame.
Now, perhaps this is not your style. That is okay. There is something for
everyone. For example:
eBay
item 66288065
Well anyway, I hope this public service announcement has been of some good to
someone. Did ANYONE read this far?! Noooo, surely not! Well if you did,
you're a peach. You get a free smiley from me. :)
Ta!

I have no Body and Soul anywhere near me, and it sounds so beautiful. I'm a
sucker for packaging.
And, as if I wasn't hooked already, you had to go mention Bettie Page.
Evil evil evil you are, Jennifer :o)

Thanks for the lovely description of your evening! I am especially envious
because I just fell in love with Body & Soul last week after checking it out at
Barney's in NYC. The line is my new obsession too. And now that I know what
your goodie bag contained, I'll have to go and check these things out next time
I'm there.
Glad you had such a wonderful time!
BTW, to the person who asked, the pricing for the line is pretty similar to
BB's. Eye shadows are $16.50, as are their lip glosses. Or right around that
price, anyway....

Ah, I feel for you! Any packaging-freak will surely be in pain until she
procures some of her own. I have shown off my little powder compact at several
opportune moments over the past few days. Everyone fussed!! Even two guys who
have no interest in makeup (or me!).
I re-thought the Bettie Page thing. Something about the whole scene was
remniscent of her, but looking at the packages again, it's more Deco. Still,
hot.
From EMiriamD:
>Body and Soul is carried by Barney's in NYC.
Ah, yes indeed, and at the other locations too. I never met the MA who covers
the NYC store, but one of the B&S employees was raving about her, saying she is
not just an incredibly talented artist, but also a genuinely nice and friendly
person! Imagine! At Barney's!!! Wow...
From Diane:
>What's the price point on this line? Comparable to Chanel, Stila,
Clinique...?
Oh suddenly I feel very selfish... I didn't even bother to look at the prices.
I took it for granted that the goodie bags were gratis!! Ughhh. Well thank
you to Laura, who replied that the shadows are $16.50. Not terribly
unreasonable!! Especially for a sturdy (yet delicate!) metal pot!
From Tansmets:
>Does anybody know if they have a shadow very much like
>stila fog- or any copy of fog? I looked all over
>yesterday for a sort of light warmer grey- shu, mufe,
>etc and couldn't find anything ! (i'm bored of stila).
I haven't seen Fog (what kind of Stila fan am I?!?) but I can tell you what
Diamond looks like. That was the color I received. I wore it last night (to
the Skybar!) and I thought it was fantastic. It is a light, shimmery gray that
can be used all over. I should also note that I *love* eyeshadow but am I
full-on dolt when it comes to applying it. This was light enough to hide my
mistakes, but also very soft and blendable, so I was overjoyed.
From Audrey:
>Time to rethink an alt.fashion gathering in Los Angeles.
>I tell you, Jennifer has the inside track...
I don't! But I'd gladly do an LA gathering. Lisa in Dallas wants to do one
too; we really should. I would still feel more comfortable planning NYC 1999
-- I know more people and places there!!

Yay!! A fellow drool-er. Please let me know what you get and what you think!!
From Marilynn:
>That has got to be *the* most entertaining review I have yet to read!
Well thanks! I tend to ramble, though. As evidenced by this 3,000-line reply.
Anyway, now that I have discovered Fred Segal, maybe I will review some more
things!! I can't afford anything right now but that never stopped me before.
All in the name of research. :)

>where is fred segal located? i will be staying at the holiday inn at

>about fred segal, i've never been there
It's pretty close to the Santa Monica shopping mall on 3rd Street
Promenade. There are two Fred Segal structures on the corner of 5th Street and
Broadway.
