I love pastels, though they may not be altogether suitable for my Asian
complexion. I was wondering if wearing liner with pastel eyeshadows is
'too much' for the Spring look? The Lancome Candide model doesn't appear
to be wearing liner, just mascara. At least, not the usual dark (eg.
black, brown) liner; Lancome has blue and green Artliners out, but I
don't use liquid liners. Suggestions?

I just bought their tabac liner (taupe) and think it would work well with
these pale shades. Also, stila rain.

what i have been doing is lining my eyes with my L'Oreal Sky Blue. I have
this great CG black eye pencil with a sponge eyeliner pointed tip on the
other side, it is like so great for lining with powder. The Sky Blue
stands out and looks great. I do this with a lot of my GB Metals Kit also
and it looks really good.

Yes its new, in the Air group i think, It is just the perfect pastel blue
with a touch of shimmer. I think its the only good shadow consistensy out
of the Air colors. The efferesvence (sp?) and the Pink Breeze do not show
up very well. I use them also with this look by putting the Efferesvence
all over lid and smudge up to just below the brow bone, and then the Pink
Breeze heavily on the lid and a little on the brow bone. but it is a very
light look since the Sky Blue is basically the only one that shows up very
well.

The spring look is definitely without eye liners AND without lip liners.
At first try it is hard to do this especially since we are still wearing
dark winter clothes. When you try the spring look wear a white or pastel
blouse or sweater. If you use pastel shadows, try transitioning by using
plum, gray or navy liner lightly. If you use pencils, Mac and BB have them
in these shades. The new spring look also gets away from black and brown
mascara to colors and the color on the lashes provides the contrast that
liner previously did. rjudith

Not only that, but it doesn't feel much like spring right now :(. As for

I love colour mascara, but have had a hard time finding one that will
show up on my lashes. I recently bought one from HR in an electric blue,
which would certainly provide much contrast to the pastels! Is colour
mascara just on the tips still the acceptable way of wearing it? I worry
about this 'shortening' my lashes.

Rjudith, you provide expert and practical advice as always. Thanks!

Sky Blue is a new color in L'Oreal's "Air" collection. It is a very pale
baby blue. It is very cool toned and somewhat sheer with shimmer. Worn
alone it is almost whitish or silvery and not much blue shows. L'Oreal ads
which are beginning to appear in some March US magazines show it worn in
the inner eye corner. It supposedly is useful for a variety of skin colors
and tones and advertisements show it with 2 different models, Mill and
Vanessa Williams. rjudith

Thanks. I can't get it here, but I have any number of pale silvery blues
from Bourjois, Shu, Mary Quant, and MAC. I'll try those. I'm thinking of
lining the eyes thickly with a wet liner brush, like a Longo MA showed
me. It should show up more, and perhaps approximate the pastel
artliners.

Similar to the palest cool blue from Mary Quant, or the lighter shade from
the Rimmel blue duo from last fall. Also 5S has a comparable color so I
suspect Shiseido may. Don't know of a Mac comparable but will look
tomorrow. Mac has far more pigment. rjudith

If you want to really just add a little 'something' in the way of
effects to it, I suggest finding a liner a similar color to the pastel
shadow. When I use a pastel green shadow, I like to use a sparkly
light green Nat Robbins liner I have, just to add to it. I chose the
green after testing every liner I had. This effect gave me the softest
look, but not as soft as no liner. For me, no liner looked washed out.
So, this idea may work for you too!

I think on the tips might give the appearance of shortening lashes and
doesn't work so well without using black as a base which is too harsh for
spring. This season it appears that colored mascara is used on the entire
lash and since there is no darker liner and the lashes are set against
pastel base colors show up a bit. But not as much as you would think and
do not look "freaky", I have the Christian Dior new mascaras in violet,
green and rose (there is also a lovely blue) and Estee Lauder in turquoise
(also disco violet and magenta, royal blue and blue green from holiday @
Nordstrom). I am just beginning to experiment with these and they are
pretty against pastel colors. rjudith

Lancôme has several of these in the foam tip pens that you purchase the cap
which holds the color. They are perfect for lining the eye with a pastel,
and I know they have sky blue and pale green.

That's exactly what the Longo MA I mentioned taught me! Except she used
the same colour dry all over, then wet thickly as liner. I've been wary
of 'spoiling' my shadows, but now would be a good time to experiment.

To test things out, I applied Bourjois Nacre Bleue shadow all over, then
silver eyeliner on one eye with a Sephora pencil, and the same Bourjois
wet with Trish #41 on the other, finishing off with HR Magnetic Ocean
mascara.

Silver liner is definitely more subtle, though this may be because of
the particular pencil that I used. I'm not a big fan of eyeliner
pencils, and may try lining with a silver shadow, wet and dry.

Using the shadow colour as liner really emphasises the colour, giving a
'frosted' effect that I really like, though it's not to everyone's
taste.

As for the mascara, I wished it showed up more. Perhaps I should have
bought the turquoise instead of this electric blue. Or I could get a
white one to use as a base.

It's astonishing how pastels can be made to look more dramatic than
darker, stronger colours! Not in the least 'insipid'.

Trucco had (has?) a nice silver liquid liner; Urban decay has a good silver
liquid - spare change; Revlon and Streetwear have silver liner pencils;
Prestige at Sears has a gray with a slight shimmer and I think Hard Candy
may have a silvery pencil. Lancome had silver liquid liner with the fall
Rouge collection but I do not know if that still is carried. rjudith

I am always careful to only wet around the edge of a powder shadow, just to
avoid the "spoiling" you mention.

Also, if the spring look calls for pale eyeliner I would still put a line of
dark powder shadow *in* the lash line, using Trish #33 brush or similar. This
punches up the lash line, no matter what color mascara you're using, and even
if you're not using any eyeliner at all.

So true, when I did the makeover on Saturday and used the very pale colt
(reddish brown)
eyeliner, it just didn't get it. So, I took a very
fine tip eyeliner brush and put just a very very
fine line of the dark green cake eyeliner
immediately around the eye area. You still had
the effect of the light, but still made the eye the
focal point. Very good point EMiriam!!!

Thanks, Kelly!

These cost a lot more here, about 6ukp for the applicator pen, and 6
again for each colour cap; you have to buy pen and 2 colours all at
once. Too expensive for a product I still have doubts about; I worry
about the colours drying up fast. I also considered the new YSL pencils,
but I would prefer to invest in an all-purpose silver, rather than one
of the pastels on offer.

I really am interested in getting a silver liquid liner, but I lack a
steady hand :(.

Trish #33 is the same as #11 except it's slanted, which makes it much easier to
use in the inner corner. The technique is the same: "push" the powder shadow
into the lash line. I never go without this line--the eye looks pallid and
would look even more so with pastel shadows and silvery/shimmery liners.

Rimmel has a silver liquid liner that's cheap and has a pretty good brush. Not
easy to use, but not harder than any other liquid liner. Practise ;)

Oops!! You're right, there's only the blue and lilac. I've been
looking at green eyeshadows lately, my subconsious must be trying to
tell me to stop looking and buy!!

Actually, now that you mention it... I'm building an eye based of of the new
Azure for today (not done yet w/ the makeup). It looks like it will be Azure
all over, a bit darker in the crease, with a bit of Prestige Studio Copper at
the inner corners, and PS Velours wet as a liner, and then over top that,
L'Oreal Lovey Dovey Superliner. So those of you trying the new spring
shades... dig out your Winter L'Oreal stuff, and see what ideas you come up
with for using the two...

<<Also, if the spring look calls for pale eyeliner I would still put a line of
dark powder shadow *in* the lash line, using Trish #33 brush or similar. This
punches up the lash line, no matter what color mascara you're using, and even
if you're not using any eyeliner at all.>>

Yes, yes, yes!! I totally agree with this. I tried doing a very pale, pearly
liner ( Trucco Watercoulour in "In Pale" ) and I felt compelled to go back in
with the little Trish brush and darken up the lash line. I felt like I was
cheating! Glad to hear someone else does this , too.

Ahhh...this sounds very pretty Emily! I hadn't thought of using a copper
with the azure...but will try it out, thanks to your suggestion!

Another possible eyeliner with pastels. Yesterday, I picked up Lancome's
liquid eyeliner in Iced Black. Don't let the name fool you...it's a
shimmery cafe latte color. Tried it today, and liked how it looked.
Gave good definition without looking harsh.
