The Dragon*Con 2001 Art Show (www.dragoncon.org) was the most successful to
date. We were one of the largest art show of these genre's in the world by
inventory counts (Dragon*Con had over 5000 pieces, Worldcon had just over
3200). For this next years show we are already deep into the planning stages
with many new items. One of the new aspects of the show will be a Digital
Art Section were digital artists can upload their work and then they are
displayed on high resolution screens throughout the show. Then if a buyer
wants to purchase a digital piece we will have On-Demand-Printing. This new
Digital section will allow hundreds of new artists into the show without
taking away any hanging or table space. If this is successful the Dragon*Con
2002 Art Show will unquestionably be the largest of it's type in the world.
In order to do a successful show as large as the Dragon*Con 2002 Art Show we
now have section managers who all work for me. This year we want each
section manager to build a team for their sections. These sections managers
are as follows:
Joe Yost (esi...@hotmail.com)
Assistant Art Show Director
Besides being the number two person, Joe's section is responsible for the
cashiers, artist check-in/check-out, inventory control, and bidder
registration. This section is also responsible for hanging/packing mail-in
artwork. In order for artists to get paid accurately and quickly artist
check-in/check-out is the most important to the artist. This is where all of
the paperwork is reviewed, corrected if necessary, i's dotted and T's
crossed. For the cashiers and bidder registration we use state of the art,
user friendly software on one big art show network. This makes taking care
of customers quick and easy. Volunteers for this section need patience and
are very determined to be 100% accurate in everything they do.
Todd Pell (thefo...@aol.com)
Art Show Assembly/Disassembly Manager
If it has to be built, moved, designed, and disassembled Todd's section is
responsible for it. This includes design of the floor layout, design and
assembly/disassembly of the hanging displays, and any special design and
assembly/disassembly of unique items like the new Digital Kiosks. If you
love to build stuff, if you like the feel of tools in your hand, if you love
to design stuff then build it then volunteering for this section is for you.
Anne Parise (apa...@roedlusa.com)
Art Show Program Manager
We are all fascinated by the art work at each art show but people want to
know "How did they do that?!" Artists are always searching for new methods
and attendees can better appreciate the art work when they know how it was
created. The art show programming is the way this all happens. The art show
programming has a huge variety of items for both the attendee and the
artist. The programming is located in the Consulate room next to the
Imperial Ballroom, right next door to the art show. The art show programming
doesn't just happen by itself it needs dedicated people to run it. These
volunteers are people that believe in bringing together the artists and the
attendees in a learning environment. If you are that type of person then Art
Show Programming needs you now more than ever!
John Parise (dor...@mindspring.com)
Art Show Internal Security Manager
The art show not only contains a lot of expensive art work but many of the
artists depend on the sales of these work for their livelihood.
Unfortunately, there are people in this world that don't have a problem
stealing art work and hurting people. The regular convention security guards
the doors to and from the art show but they don't work inside the art show.
To protect the artists and the art inside the art show John Parise is our
protector. John's section is responsible for the now infamous floorwalkers.
Floorwalkers not only keep an eye on the art but they are helpers to those
attendees that need help understanding how the bid process works, how to
read a bid sheet, and they run the artwork to and from the art auction. For
the 2001 art show these floorwalkers did such a good job that not one piece
of artwork was missing. A volunteer in this section is like one of those
very honorable but effective protectors of the public we've all read about
in mythical tales.
Audre Vysniauskas (au...@chartermi.net)
Art Show Digital Section Manager
The Dragon*Con Art Show charter is to host all art forms. This expansive
view raises the overall quality of the show, which has the additional
benefit of enhancing attendee experience and memorability. Most traditional
art mediums require physical hanging space, tabletop space, or even floor
space. There now exists a new art medium, digital art, which breaks away
from this physically bound tradition. Surprisingly, for as short a life as
this medium has had, it already has an enormous support base. Digital art
has literally exploded in recent years. And, unlike most traditional
mediums, digital art can look like almost any other medium so most people
aren't even aware of the digital nature of the art they are currently
enjoying in their every day life. This new medium is so pervasive, in fact,
that much of the artwork in movies, on book covers, and on T.V. is digital!
This year, there will be a Digital Art Section, created to address those
concerns specific to digital media. The Digital Art Section will enable
digital artists to show their work in its native form, and also have the
ability to sell prints, without a prohibitive monetary investment. During
the Digital Art Section, digital art will be presented at various Kiosks or
Display Stations. If an attendee wants to purchase a print of one of the
images in the show, they can have it printed on demand, and even have a
selection of not only image size, but print type: watercolor paper base, or
canvas -in either loose or stretch frame-mounted form. A volunteer in this
section will have to make sure the Digital kiosks are turned on/off each
day, trouble-shoot computer problems, and help customers that don't
understand how to buy a print on demand they see on a Digital kiosk.
We would love to have good, quality people working with us. If you are
interested in being a member of a particular team then please get in contact
with one of the section managers today. Remember, when you volunteer 20
hours you get a complimentary pass into the convention. I promise you will
have the time of you life!
