So the DC/VA/MD area AFW folks decided to get together, and twmr.
Becky volunteered her house. Julia volunteered to run a SW
role-playing game. Renata baked a rhyscate ver.2, I brought ice
cream (chocolate, duh) and Shannon brought salad (I think, she was
already there when we arrived). There was pizza, there was
laughter, there was more laughter, there was laughter until our
sides ached, and there was the game, that made us the pilots of a
newly-formed X-Wing squad--more on that below.
To soothe the Prophetess and comply with the New Republic
regulations on such gatherings, photos were taken by Becky and
Renata, which I believe they'll make available in time. Also in
compliance with the aforementioned regulations, I'm providing AFW
with the report.
We were, with one exception, all female pilots. Becky played a
Twi'lek named Jor'essah. Her son Jeremy was a force-sensitive human
called Rejenal. Shannon was Kiersey the Sullustan, and Renata was
Allya, another human. I was named Queprhia Bia, and I was--the
faint of heart should stop reading now--an Omwat.
That's right, folks. _Someone_ had to redeem the species.
Besides, the timeline was before the time of the Books That Shan't
Be Named.
As scenarios go, this was a good one for the several
complete-beginners-to-SW-RPGs people on the table: Go through a
training run on a simulation, then, for a first mission, get to
accompany a freighter to a planet for a shipment of supplies,
including nerf milk, to the base.
The rest of the game is best expressed in the quotes, noted down
mostly by Renata. Some of them are uttered in-character (numbers 1,
5, 7, 12, and 18 forex); the others are obviously out-of-character
:-). You are free to guess who said what.
AFW-DC: The Role-Playing Game: _Bacta Basics/Got Milk?_
1. "We're _Pink_ Squadron?" \begin{farmboy mode} "Can we change our
name if the first mission is successful?" \end{farmboy mode}
2. "We all need target practice!"
3. "Wait, how did _I_ get to be the flight leader?!"
4. "That Blue Chick whom we do not discuss..."
5. [Tycho, as a NPC, after several busted 'take-off' rolls]
"Wes! _Put your shirt back on_ until the girls leave the hangar!"
6. [First briefing, as soon as Capt. Celchu greets us, to the GM]
"Do we have to roll to make a move on Tycho?"
7. "I named my astromech Tycho, and if he finds out about this, I'll
have to hurt somebody!"
8. "Swallow, _then_ breathe."
9. "I tell you, I can _break_ things!"
10. "All right, if we rub our Force points together..."
11. "It's called cover fire. It makes them scatter and duck
their heads."
"And it makes you feel good."
12. "All right, now the stormies have an X-Wing staring at them and
a crater [created by the X-Wing] between them and the
X-Wing. Do they make a wisdom roll to turn and run?"
13. "I can talk to her astromech now without using the complink,
since he's within screaming range..."
14. "I just named my astromech! It's "Bail", as in "Bail me out!"."
15. "We're turning this [The DM Screen] around, so _I_ can see the
cute guys."
16. "I'm screaming at the droid--Get the shields _up_ _now_!"
[die roll: 2]
"He doesn't like getting yelled at."
17. "I need bacta, lots of bacta."
"We'll put you in next to Hobbie. It'll be very romantic."
18. "I didn't think you'd make it back..." "Neither did we..."
19. Unit commander-in-acting: "Recommendations: Her, to the gym.
Her astromech, to upgrade. Me, to therapy."
20. "A blushing starfighter?!"
You see, folks, that "milk run" ended up involving a shootout with
stormies on the ground, three tries to get a wounded teammember in
her cockpit, eight TIEs against three and a half functional
fighters... and an unexpected Guardian-class cruiser at the sight of
which we performed the basic and recommended maneuver in all such
cases very promptly.
I believe the technical term for the maneuver in question is
HBOT-N: "Haul Backside Outta There, _NOW_."
At the end, we accomplished the mission--the milk-laden freighter
was the first ship of ours to perform HBOT, actually--so we get to
redesignate our squadron. Several alternative unit names and logos
sprang from our adventures, and Becky is busy scanning them around
now, I think. The choices that come to mind are Dicey Squadron
(obvious reasons), Rouge Squadron (no, I didn't typo, and we _did_
start our as "Pink Squadron"...), Target Squadron (We did get hit
by, gasp, stormtroopers) and Bacta-Basics Squadron (Pun alert.
Back-to-basics, bacta basics, all good. Besides, bacta is pink.)
We decided that we'd put on the scans online, and let AFW decide
what our squadron should be named. The URL will be available soon,
at which point we'll ask for your ideas...
Thus it transpired, thus was it reported, and twmr.

Oh, I've been posting there probably longer than I've been posting
to alt.fan.wedge. I started reading that group around the same time
I started reading RASSM; from RASSM I graduated to AFW but I never
left RASFWRJ.
Funny, "I didn't know you posted to RASFWRJ" was my first thought
as soon as I saw your name on the thread lists there ;-).

Um, what? In what context?
The only splines I've used are mathematical splines, related to a
techniques of approximating a function, but if I start discussing
them here, I rather suspect I'll have rabid Ewoks let loose on me
pretty quickly...
I don't see any splines in "There Was Much Rejoicing"?

"What's a spline" means "I should know this, but I don't. Help me
out?"
Thanks.

Oh, and I posted for a while about a year ago, but left. I'm trying to
slide back in; if I can avoid "insert foot A into mouth B" again I'll
be OK.

My vote goes for Rouge Squadron. Think of the possibilities! :)

Yes, that's right, AFW is Usenet on E.

Oh so long ago, I came up with a campaign idea. Everyone was a rookie
pilot and got word they had been accepted to Rouge Squadron. Of course,
everyone misread their packet and thought they were in Rogue Squadron.
Much fun ensues.
I should run that someday.

Good, good. You make me proud, my children! And this looks like a great
time! Very hilarious!

Fabulous! Scans of photos and related graphics would be appreciated, for
posting on the AFWCon page; or, alternatively, if they all end up on
someone's site, I can just put up a link to them. :->

I'd be happy to send the scans of the sketches to you. Just let me know what
e-mail address to send them to. I've got them on a page, but it doesn't link
from anything the way I've got it right now. I don't care if you link to it,
though.
Once pictures are developed, I'll send those scans too.

You and me both sister! And I'm in the VA area too, but I happened to be out
of town that day and couldn't make it. I've been mildly depressed reading
about all the fun I missed out on, but then I look at my new stuffed puppy that
I bought on my trip, and named Wes, and a smile returns to my face.
And after I named my puppy Wes, I read the name on the tag that he came with,
which was Biscuit. I couldn't help but laugh at the thought of calling Wes a
biscuit. :-D

She got me a stuffed puppy too (for being airport transportation) and named him
Tycho before giving him to me.

Tycho's tag says Buddy. I think that works. :-)
