Everyone,

The initial arguments over casting have petered out, but here's your last
chance to suggest any nominees for our second AFW Casting Poll. I've gone
through the Dramatis Personae lists and added people we haven't yet cast
in this thread--not surprisingly, they're mostly nonhuman. I didn't write
down *everyone*. Feel free to add if you wish.

A few additional notes:

For the nonhumans, I suggest, instead of trying to think of people who
would be good in a suit, try to think of people who would be good as the
human equivalent of the nonhuman character. Don't know if that will work,
but...

The old casting poll is, of course, up on Classic Threads at
AFWCentral. This includes comments we got from Mike and Aaron. There is
no problem with repeating any of these nominations--in fact, I already
did, for a few of them.

Go ahead and argue these out, if you'd like. I have no problem with you
stating your reasons for your choices! Also, if there's a preference for
actor based on time (old vs. young Wedge etc), I can create dual
categories.

I'll run a vote in a few weeks or when there's no more dicussion on this,
and it will be chad-free. (oy, even I'm not beyond them!)

The nominations are still open and this is how they stand so far:

Wedge: John Cusack, Ewan McGregor, Noah Hathaway, Denis Lawson

Tycho: Robert Duncan McNeill, Sean Bean, Joseph Fiennes

Wes: Noah Wyle, a younger Gerard Depardieu, Steve Irwin, Jerry Doyle,
Nicholas Brendan, RUSSELL CROWE, Guy Pearce, Ben Affleck, Freddie Prinze,
Jr, Michael DeLuise

[did you really think I wouldn't try to influence *that* one? I happen to
quite like my idea...]

Hobbie: Jason Statham, Bill Mumy

Corran: Christian Slater, Seth Green, Nicholas Cage, Joseph Fiennes

Bror: Matthew McConaughey

Erisi: Winona Ryder, Clare Danes, Sarah Michelle Gellar, Eliza Dushku

Lujayne: Sarah Michelle Gellar, Angelina Jolie, Gwyneth Paltrow

Inyri: Angelina Jolie, Michelle Yeoh, Eliza Dushku, Gwyneth Paltrow

Gavin: Christian Bale

Phanan: Nicholas Cage, Edward Norton, Chris Barrie

Face: Colin Firth, Joseph Fiennes, Robert Duncan McNeill, River Pheonix,
Rupert Everett, Joaquin Phoenix

Kell: Casper Van Dien

Tyria: Denise Richards, Clare Danes

Falynn: Clare Danes, Winona Ryder

Myn: David Boreanaz, Russell Crowe

Lara/Gara/Kirney: Kate Winslet

Shalla: Bianca Lawson, Michelle Yeoh, Jessica Alba

Soontir Fel: Jean Reno

Uhh...

How DARE people suggest someone other than the mighty Denis Lawson?!

It is now impossible for me to consider anyone other than Crowe in

An older Seth Green.

Hrmm. A younger Bruce Willis.

All over the shop there ;)

The women seem to suffer from repeat nominations. Understandable in
the case of the Forges, though. The same actor should probably do
both, with slight cosmetic alterations while in Lujayne's role.

Chris Barrie! :)

My god. That's going to change my reading of the novels forever.

Leonardo diCaprio! :P

Someone blonde and weathered here.

Tim Zahn of course.

Butt kisser. :-)

The saving grace of it is the frequency with which the name Eliza Dushku
appears. Whew... Is it just me, or is it getting warm in here?

No, she played Carmen. Dina Meyer played Dizzy. See also "Wild Things."

LOL!! I would never have thought of it, but it's brilliant! Of course that
means the movie has to come out on July 4th weekend...

John Cusack. He was born to play Wedge.

Ooh, Ben Affleck! But the seaQuest chick in me can't get over Michael
DeLuise....no, Ben Affleck. (I always loved Tony.)

I'm still totally lost as to who this Russell Crowe guy is...which is
probably grounds for flogging, right, Kristy?

Ed Norton Is Hobbie Klivian!!! Another guy who was born to play a
Rogue. I have *very* strong feelings about this one.

Tom Cruise. Only he could pull off the arrogance.

I would think he's not aristocratic enough, what with the accent and
everything. Of course, I don't have an actual nomination, so I should
just shut up. Oh wait! Whatshisname....Jude Law!

No, it just takes you to a picture that says "FREE JEFF K.".

It used to link to a really funny page about the FBI arresting Jeff K
for running a hacking website.

If you've been looking through Cliff Yablonski's shit, that's your
fault. I stay the hell away from THAT. :)

Charlie Sheen.

River Phoenix is dead; can we cast dead people? Actually, I want to

dead, then we can play with time and DL can stay Wedge) Otherwise, Ian
Richardson

If we're casting the dead, please accept the following for cameos as
Imperial officers: James Mason. For the living, throw in Judi Dench
(who wouldn't make a bad Mon Motha), and Ian Richardson.

Kristy doth spake ...

>The nominations are still open and this is how they stand so far:
>Wedge: John Cusack, Ewan McGregor, Noah Hathaway, Denis Lawson

No problems with any of those ;)

>Tycho: Robert Duncan McNeill, Sean Bean, Joseph Fiennes

Edward Kerr

>Wes: Noah Wyle, a younger Gerard Depardieu, Steve Irwin, Jerry Doyle,

>Nicholas Brendan, Russell Crowe, Guy Pearce, BEN AFFLECK, Freddie Prinze,
>Jr, Michael DeLuise

Well, Ben Affleck of course. I'm sorry Kristy, but aside from Crowe being
too old, he just doesn't do it for me, I think he's a great actor, but I
like Dennis Quaid so much more and after he took Meg away I just can't vote
for him in anything, I'm too heartbroken. - lol ;)

>Hobbie: Jason Statham, Bill Mumy

Matthew Modine, I 'altered' a pic of him and put him in a NR uniform,
lightened his hair a bit and it really works- check it out on the casting
couch page of the WEBsite ::plug plug:: :)

>Corran: Christian Slater, Seth Green, Nicholas Cage, Joseph Fiennes

Michael Shanks- also up on the casting couch page- He plays Dr. Daniel
Jackson on SG-1 and aside from being a 'hottie', is a great actor and can do
drama and action very well.

>Kell: Casper Van Dien

That one is just so perfect, I can't even imagine any one else.

>Tyria: Denise Richards, Clare Danes

Denise Richards? Isn't she the one from Starship Troopers that can't act?
I'm gonna have to go with Claire on that just to vote against Denise.

>Myn: David Boreanaz, Russell Crowe

We have some great ideas on Myn- from George Clooney (back when he had hair
all one color- lol, to Wes Bentley and even Chow Yun Fat. But I think I'd
like to nominate Tom Eplin for Myn- dark, brooding, cranky...lol works for
me! :)

>Lara/Gara/Kirney: Kate Winslet

Ok ok, throw rotten tomatoes if you want, but since Myn and Lara had a
'thing' going and I like Tom for Myn, I have to vote for Anne Heche here- if
you only know her as "Ellen's girlfriend" you're missing out on a great
actress who started out playing twins on a soap opera with Tom. She was so
good at the different personalities, you could tell when one twin was
pretending to be the other without her saying a word.

>Shalla: Bianca Lawson, Michelle Yeoh, Jessica Alba

Gina Torres!!! Nuff said. Meee-yow! :)

>Soontir Fel: Jean Reno

As yummy as Jean is, I see Kevin Smith (the Kiwi, not the american director)
as Fel.

>Nawara

I'd throw Gary Oldman down here rather than as Karrde

>Iella

Who's good enough for Wedge?

>Winter

I've been convinced by some stellar artwork that the only person right for
Winter is Michelle Pfeiffer. :)

I loved the Lucy Lawless suggestion on this one, Plourr is one of my FAVE
characters and she'd have to be tough tough tough!

If I think of any more, I'll let you know :)

I don't know...though I'm guilty of the Noah Hathaway nomination. We're
looking for a younger Wedge, I think, and Denis would be better for NJO
Wedge.

I have a feeling I'll be splitting categories here, young vs. old Wedge.

Talk to your fellow males about that one. ;-)

I should note that we're not limited in time and space here. Nominate the
people you think fulfill your vision of the characters. At any stage in
their lives (so younger and older versions of current actors are legal),
and the same actor may end up being cast for more than one role. This is
just an exercise in imagination, anyway--where would we get the money to
hire these people?!

at this point. The election will be later.

No, I'll forgive you, as long as you run out and rent Gladiator this
instant. Russell's in that, and The Insider (Oscar nominated!), and LA
Confidential, and Proof of Life. And Gladiator.

Someone already said Jessica Alba for Asyr, but I think she'd work as Shalla.

hyper-intelligent? No, not really. ;-) I love Tom, but he's

Denis *is* Wedge, no question... the question is which actors could play the
character :)

Just a few of my ideas/votes (anything to avoid the 400lbs. gorilla that has
become Project Boussh)

Wedge: (Young) John Cusack (Old)Denis Lawson
Wes: (oh what the hell) RUSSELL CROWE
Erisi: Sarah Michelle Gellar
Phanan: Nicholas Cage
Face: Dirk Benedict (whoops...wrong Face)
Tyria: Denise Richards ( I don't care where, I'd vote for Denise Richards
for anything)
Falynn: Clare Danes (Winona's just too cute to play Falynn)
Myn: David Boreanaz
Iella: Whoever nominated Gillian Anderson, I second it.
Winter: Michelle Pfifer

Okay, wait, I have to mess things up again. Brendan Fraser for Wes. Or
maybe Pash. He's not too bad at drama, & we know he can do comedy! I
can see him sneaking around nekkid after an escaped Ewok...

I reiterate: TIME MACHINE! Denis Lawson as Wedge; young/X-wing/NJO,
doesn't matter...the man was BORN to wear orange!

And if we can nominate dead people, James Mason as any icy, high-
ranking Imperial Officer anyone cares to name...(except maybe Isarrd).
Ian Richardson as runner up. (He's not dead, thank heaven). (Maybe
Mason could be General Cracken?)

I am completely stumped on Pash. I can see him in my head, but I can't
think of any actor that matches the face & attitude.

In Brad's case, it's impossible to imagine or consider anyone else for

Can I recommend Rick Worthy for Runt? He's not terribly well-known, but
he's a wonderful actor, has great, expressive eyes, and he's worked in alien
makeup for Star Trek. When I think of the side of Runt that approached Kell

Worthy.

I was pretty happy with that one (Couldn't remember here name - IMDb is
great).

Hmm, maybe you can link the person's name to a relevant URL when you put
the nominations up at AFW Central. Either IMDb or a fan site for movie
actors, and a TV show or fan site for TV actors.

(Interesting - www.tvdb.com has a "future site" place holder. Could it
be a TV equivalent of the IMDb? We can only hope...)

Shooting isn't inevitable. After all, Josh, Corran or Vickie could cleave
him in two (I love the word 'cleave', by the way).

Other than that, the only possible alternative is in him being captured by
Thayer and the rest of his group. Atner cannot be tried in a New Republic
court, nor would the UN believe any of the charges we could lay against him.

Personally I go for the Isard option: Lock him away for a long, long time.

A democracy, on the other hand, has (or should have) checks against the chosen
leader being oppressive or otherwise nasty. The trade-off is, of course, that a
good leader won't be able to do quite as much because of those same checks.

A good monarchy is a whole lot better than a good democracy.

A bad monarchy is a whole lot worse than a bad democracy (generally, anyway...).

Putting Thayer on the throne and saying, "Yay, everything's better," is thinking
too much in the short term. IMHO, anyway. :)

Personally, I think Thayer would be more amenable to, say, bringing in a
constitutional monarchy (e.g., Britain, Canada, Australia) than Eugor. But what if
I'm wrong?

As far as the 'Prime Directive' thing goes, the NR is perfectly capable of
interfering - it's just that there'll be diplomatic repercussions if anyone finds
out. Their involvement with the Mendellian government can be justified by pointing
to the fact the Imperials got involved first. Otherwise, people back in the GFFA
who may or may not find out might point at any interference and cite that as a
reason for not joining the NR.

My two cents, anyway.

> I'm wrong?

I think you're right, actually. :-) After all...Thayer may've been
raised a prince, but he's spent the past...um, I'm not sure how
long...heading up this resistance movement, and that's put him face to
face with the people of Mendellia more often than he ever had
opportunity before Eugor's coup. And he's young enough still to be open
to changes.

All the same...it's quite a change, making a democracy out of a
monarchy. Sometimes revolutions lead to nicely ordered republics;
sometimes they lead to Terrors and Directories...and Empires...and
Restorations...and Second Republics...and Second Empires...and maybe
eventually, if you're lucky, Third Republics that last a while. :-)
(But then I've been reading too much French history lately...) But then
if the change can be made peaceably, not by popular revolution but by
the nation's leader, maybe the resulting democracy will be more stable.
And I'm sure Thayer knows his French history, too. :-)

You also have to consider the populace--whether they can handle a
democracy. Sometimes, when people are accustomed to a tyrant's rule, if
you kill the tyrant for them, they'll just find a new tyrant, rather
than taking the opportunity to find a better form of government. (I'm
thinking of Musset's Lorenzaccio. Yes, I have a French lit test today;
can you tell? ;-)

And also...who said Mendellia's government was an absolute monarchy in
the first place? :-) What they have now is a tyrant, not a monarch.
Eugor killed his brother and seized power...it may be that he seized
more power than the Mendellian Dictator would normally hold. With the
Imps backing him up, who's going to stop him? With Eugor out of the
way, Mendellia could go back to...whatever they had before. Maybe with
more precautions in place to prevent such a coup happening again.

Anyway, as far as Eugor's fate...I think Thayer's less vengeful now
than he was shortly after his father's death, but more set on justice
than ever--since joining the resistance, he's seen a lot more of
Eugor's crimes than that initial murder. He'll want his uncle brought
to justice, but that may or may not mean killing him. Actually...I'm
seeing something like a Bastille Day at the High Palace. Let Atner be
trying to escape when he realizes we're in the Palace, and let him
escape right into a mob of angry Mendellians. They can guillotine him
or whatever passes for guillotining in Mendellia. (Hm. I really need to
get that French test over with so I can find different analogies...)

Yes, I can tell. :) However, the thing to consider when it comes to the
populace is that if Thayer has a hope in hell of running a successful
revolution, he has to *convince* the people. If a bunch of Neo-Nazis staged
a military coup in the U.S., would the population stand for it? (Strictly
an example - I realise said coup probably isn't feasible, for more reasons
than just the will of the people.)

This is something Mao Zedong kept in mind in the Communist revolution in
China. By having the Communist guerillas treat the general population well,
the population provided support for the guerillas, as well as being amenable
to the Communists taking control. If Thayer is doing the same kind of thing
(which is advisable) then the Mendellian people will be looking forward to
the brave new democratic (or whatever) world that Thayer has to offer.

Maybe, but 'Dictator' sounds like a modern term for 'King' - especially with
the hereditary aspects of the office. Which makes me think - perhaps the
leaders are the ones *literally* 'bred to rule'?

But since Eugor didn't change the title - e.g. 'Dictator for Life', 'Grand
Dictator', 'Well-Hung Dictator Who All The Ladies Like' - it would seem he
hasn't greatly upset the normal functioning of the office. All of these
would point towards an absolute monarchy - but, since we know very little
about Mendellia or its history, this is all conjecture.

Of course, to do this from a literary point of view - let's bring out some
of his bigger atrocities to have people hate him.

His breeding licenses, for example. Anyone, man or woman, wishing to have
children has to undergo a series of taxing, invasive and downright
embarrasing tests to determine their 'genetic quotient'. Anyone who comes
up substandard is forbidden to have children under pain of death - and not
many people are apparently up to scratch.

So, naturally, people go ahead and have kids regardless - but, generally,
armed troops breaking into homes and making small families disappear -
occasionally with gunfire - is a *good* way to get a populace mad at you.

It's also a damn good way to get them as terrified as hell.

Just some suggestions. :)

Okey-dokey - I'm not a political expert, so much of what I have to say here will
sound like it's coming from an uneducated moron (with good reason, since it is).
Also, I'm using 'monarchy' and 'democracy' in very general terms. Under the
defintions given below, for example, Republican Rome would be classed as a democracy
- which it wasn't, quite. That said -

'good' government - increases prosperity and happiness of its people, doesn't start
wars without a VERY good reason, spends its money on projects to the benefit of its
people (infrastructure, e.g.).

'bad' government - doesn't care a whit about the prosperity or happiness of its
people, as long as they're productive; willing, if not eager, to use war for its
own ends; spends its money to benefit the rulers and other designated high-class
people - and no-one else.

Since 'good' and 'bad' are subjective, I thought I'd try and clear up what I mean by
those terms. (And a 'bad' government doesn't have to be militaristic - but it
helps.)

An absolute monarchy tends to work on the mechanic, "What the (insert ruler's title
here) says goes." The monarch generally rules for their lifetime. The monarch may
or may not have advisers, or a staff, but that's the general gist of it. A feudal
system of monarchy does spread the power around a bit, but the source of power is
the ruler. (I know, historically, that in most Christian European monarchies, the
Church had a hand in this - but I'm mouthing off about enough things I know nothing
about already.)

The thing is, in a monarchy things will tend to benefit the monarch and the
monarch's friends. The monarch and his/her friends will often be beyond the reach
of the law that binds most 'commoners'. This greatly increases the normal human
temptation to further oneself at the detriment of lots of others.

In a democracy, a leader is elected for a fixed term (there may be exceptions to
this - none occur to me offhand, though). Before and after that, they are
theoretically a normal citizen. They are elected by a majority of voting citizens
(again, in theory - this is dependent on the election mechanism, I guess). If they
seek to gather power for their office, they will still lose their office after a
given period (unless they can extend their term...). If they seek to gather power
for themselves, their opponents will (hopefully) use the system of government to
remove the power-seekers from office.

Major decisions generally seem to require a poll of voters. If a leader attempts to
be made President for Life, for example, the leader must convince the people to let
them. This persuasion may very well be done at gunpoint - but it's a lot harder to
pull off such a thing without looking very bad internationally.

However, in working to benefit anyone, political opponents to the incumbent leader
have a hand in blocking it. This is good if it is genuinely a bad idea. However,
humans being the lovely creatures they are, blocking an initiative may be symbolic
of another agenda entirely. Hence, it is harder to do 'good' governing in a
democracy.

It is a whole heap harder to 'bad' governing, though, which is kind of the point.

I hope this was worth the cent. :) (And if I've said anything hopelessly naive,
please set me straight.)

Josh.

Sorry about the rant, people... :)

That's what I'm thinking. I mean, really; we didn't get into this because
of any problems with Mendellia's government. We got into this because
Quiara went missing. Let's not lose sight of our goal here: to rescue
Quiara. Membership/working for the New Republic is just a bonus. If
we're going to go messing around with Mendellia's established government,
what's stopping us from doing the same all over the world?

Helping Thayer reclaim his rightful position, yes. (If only because our
goals happen to collide at this moment in time.) Changing what that
position is, I don't think so.

Cos in a bad democracy you don't have to wait until the monarch keels
over.
