Hi again,

Yes, I know I said I'm busy, but I find I want to share
this. "This" is rather sentimental, bordering on mushy stuff; if
that bothers you do not proceed, you have been warned.

In the AFW FAQ, it is mentioned that the title "God" is reserved
for John Williams by musical Star Wars fans. How right a statement
that is. How much does he deserve the name.

You see, I've been spending many hours reading books on CMOS
technology for the past couple of days (don't ask) and that means
I'm chained to the desk, with my Discman for company. And a copy of
RoTJ soundtrack, disc 2, inside.

What's more, I took the time to zip through _Jedi Eclipse_ in the
middle of the week, accompanied by the same soundtrack.

At that time I found myself returning and returning to track five,
the opening of which is the music for the opening for the Battle of
Endor. To me, that piece of music have always been what symbolized
our pilots--their theme, if you will, in the Wagner-esque leitmotif
structure of Star Wars music. Specifically, the part between 50
seconds and 2 minutes 26 seconds into the piece. In the part
between 1:05 and 1:20, I can _hear_ them--"All wings report in...Red
Leader standing by... Gray Leader standing by... Green Leader
standing by... Lock S-foils in attack position."

That's always been one of Williams' strengths--coordinating his
music with the action, so musical phrases weave around and underline
what's on the scene and characters' words. The little appearance of
Leia's Theme when her hologram first appears in Luke's garage, for
instance, or the music describing the same sweeping arc with the
_Millenium Falcon_ is it turns to dive into the "hidey hole" on the
large asteroid; large invasion ships landing on Naboo, or the Force
theme swelling in time with Luke's X-wing rising from the swamp;
stormtroopers marching prisoners down the corridors of _Tantive IV_;
Han walking in after Luke's revelations to Leia on Endor; watch the
trilogy enough times and you can watch it with eyes closed just
listening to the music.

And, going back to track 5 on RoTJ when the same theme swells
after 1:20 with repetitions, while Rebel forces rush in and discover
they've been lured into a trap, to me it sings the song of men going
knowingly and willingly to their deaths because something larger is
at stake.

Then there's the hauntingly beautiful "Luke and Leia's Theme", the
new closing song to RoTJ that sounds to me just like what that
celebration song should be--joyful, but not forgetting what price
had been paid, so subdued. The asteroid chase. The timeless
classics of Imperial March, the Force theme, and of course, the
fanfare.

And track five, that made me read what happened at the latest time
the Yuuzhan Vong attacked a planet (no spoilers here, folks) with my
heart in my throat. As well written as that was, and as tensely, I
have to wonder how much the music contributed to my adrenaline
drifting in top notches all that time.

Star Wars fans young and old--we have been lucky.

Peace,

**** Red Leader standing by.

Wow, I just came back from watching ROTJ to find this eloquent post.
Darn right John Williams is God. I have always wanted to play a part of
the SW soundtrack in an orchestra (I play violin), especially a really
intense part, like the one Morwen described. That would be such a
thrill. Makes me shudder....

To me, that piece of music have always been what symbolized
> our pilots--their theme, if you will, in the Wagner-esque leitmotif
> structure of Star Wars music.

Is this the strings bit at 1:03? 'Cause if it is....<delicious shudder>
...I don't know Wagner enough to know.

Specifically, the part between 50

After reading this post, I had to listen to it, and...wow. <grin>

> Star Wars fans young and old--we have been lucky.

No kidding. Even the new stuff John Williams wrote for the movies is
great, the Ewok Celebration in particular--I love the theme first on
whistle, then joined by a children's choir (I think), then the violins
--because it's moderately up-tempo, but it's also in a minor key--a
reminder of how much they've lost in winning?

Agreed. No matter how many times I hear the EpVI celebration song, it send
shivers up and down my boy. Scarily, just reading about it in your post does
likewise.

I did something silly.

I read Vector Prime to Happy Hardcore.

The tempo is right up there but it only was really appropriate when
the Solo kids were running the belt together :)

I think the "Wagneresque leitmotif structure" is more to do with
particular musical themes corrseponding to particular people and/or
things. When you talk about "the Force theme" or "Luke's theme" or "the
Imperial theme". It's a style of composition that Williams uses, and
IIRC Wagner either invented or popularised it with the Ring (I forget
the proper name for the saga).

The next question is - how and why do I know this? One of those random
bits of information you pick up I guess.

Cheers,
Nick.

*nods in agreement* I have always admired John Williams, so much that I
have nearly every one of the soundtracks of movies he has made.

*ick on the CMOS tech* I prefer ESB disk 1 myself. And you should
mention that this is ROTJ:SE soundtrack. I have all seven disks (ANH,
ESB, ROTJ & TPM) as mp3s on my computer at work and listen to them all
day. There are certain tracks that seem to instill a powerful working
force. I get more work done.

Good choice of composers there. I also hear much Stravinsky (Rite of
Spring, second movement) in "Little People at Work" from the ANH
soundtrack. Beethoven, Brahms, Mahler. John has used many popular works
to influence his writings. And he has influenced other, such as Danny
Elfman.

Every piece of John's music invokes visions of whatever movie from which
the music was taken. The SW soundtracks nonwithstanding, I can hear Indy
charging across the desert in the Raiders soundtrack. I can see huge
herbivore dinosaurs in the Jurassic Park soudtrack. Two notes played
over and over have given many people a fear of the ocean (Jaws). Can you
watch CNN without thinking of John? He did, after all, compose their
theme song. And what about the Olympic theme? Ever since John composed
it for the LA olympics, it has been used at every subsequent games.

Absolutly... and sometimes it doesn't take that many times watching over
and over....

A whole lot, I'm sure. Too bad we can't get John to write a soundtrack
for all the books.

I bought the sheet music for the SW trilogy and am (ahem) *attempting* to
play it on my violin. It is pretty cool, especially Yoda's theme, the
Luke/Force theme thingy and the Princess Leia theme. However, my measly
Grade 5 playing does no really do the pieces the justice and beauty they
deserve...
I would love to play the music in an orchestra - we have played other John
William's soundtracks though - Hook and ET. I loved it!

I've got the flute version of that, I think. Somewhere. I can't seem to
find it anymore. It's not with my music at school so it has to be at
home somewhere. Gonna have to do some digging next time I'm home...

I bought it after having played a few SW pieces in marching band my
freshman year...the flute sheet music isn't nearly as cool as the
arrangements we had in band, though. Of course it's hard to play an
arrangement by yourself, but anyway...there *was* that lovely flute
solo in Leia's Theme. Which of course I didn't get to play, being a
freshman.(And you know there are *never* flute solos in marching band
music. For good reasons...)

Now, the cantina band swing song--*that* made for a very cool feature
tune. :-)

Hey! You've got the violin music, and I've got (assuming I can locate
it) the flute music. We've got an orchestra of two! *G*

My sight-reading is probably as bad as yours, Kristy. I tend to play by
"ear". I can do the clarinet, bass clarinet, well, just about anything
else actually. 3 1/2 years as a music education student. I can play it
all (not well, but I can play it *g*).

I wrote a computer program to play written music on a PC speaker (not
the sound card - the internal speaker) as an assignment.

I added phrasing into it, just so I could get it to play the SW theme
(the lack of chords is a bit of a problem though).

Coolness. :o) Too bad "Rakish Rebel Scum" is taken.

Err, it can't actually read sheet music... you have to type it into a
text file (pitch, duration & phrase markers). The PC speaker doesn't
have a volume control either :P

It was fun to play with it though

As for conducting, I can direct choirs, but it's not the same thing...

*raises hand* I can conduct. Got A's in both of my conducting classes,
and a B in my choral method's class which included conducting. That and
I used to be a religious watcher of the Boston Pops (when John was

Was listening to ROTJ soundtrack the other day ( yes, *again*), and I
think there actually is a bit of piano--you know, the rumbly, low-end
sort--on one of the Battle of Endor tracks, I forget which one.

Ready and willing to add yet *another* violin to the mix--I'd volunteer
my services as cello, but my bass clef is *way* out of practice.

I've got also Emily on guitar and Sci on trombone.

Hm, we're kind of weak still in the brass section. Any
trumpets/euphoniums/tubas out there? And we could stand to diversify
the strings a little. Any string players other than violins and
guitars? As for the woodwinds, we could use an oboe and some
saxes...oh, and some low woodwinds, we've got the bass clarinet but we
still need contrabass and bassoon. We might need some more
percussionists too; don't want Shanon to go crazy trying to cover all
the parts! :-) And oh! we need a choir! For those voice parts in the
Emperor's theme and in the ROTJ-SE victory celebration song...

I also play the viola so we've got one of them as well as two violins. We
really need a few cellos and maybe a double bass. The brass section consists
of a french horn, a cornet and a trombone so we might need a little more
players there.....help! Don't forget the nice choir bits in Duel of the

Does it really matter if I don't have a particular speciality for singing? I

No problem. Okay, here's what I've had experience with: French Horn, Cornet, Eb
Horn, Snare drum, Bodbran, Bongos, Tin whistle, Recorder, Flat top acoustical
guitar, (cymbals in marching band), harmonica and last but not least, my favorite,
I have a Wedge shaped suspended drum. I've also sang soprano and alto, though my
voice is not what it was many moons ago. Opps, I have a gourd rattle and bells
all over the house too. Does that help?

The order from top to bottom:

Soprano I
Soprano II
Alto I

Tenor I
Tenor II
Baritone (Bass I)
Bass (Bass II)

There are also other parts, but, not real important.

Wow. OK, when there aren't any particularly vital Cornet or French Horn
parts (no way we're letting you away during Leia's theme ;-), you
should probably be helping Shanon out in the percussion kingdom...

Oh, btw, since we're doing multiple instruments per person now, I've
got a little piano experience. It's what my mom (pastor's wife and
pianist extraordinaire) calls "evangelical style," as in "ready in
season and out"--basically just lots of chording and such. Other than
that, I've blown into a trombone and an alto sax before, once each, and
that's about as far as my non-flute winds experience goes. *G* I do
sing second soprano though (which means you can put me on soprano or
alto as needed. But alto's generally better).

LOL

Actually I myself feel that the brass is what really tends to lend the most
mood to the music, more or less with the percussion but the brass by far lets
us actually feel the music in the mood its intended.

I see Wes playing trombone, Hobbie either french horn or percussion.
Tycho... hmmm... trumpet? Wedge is conductor, but if I gave him an
instrument, I'd say sax. Iella, flute. Mirax is trumpet too. Face would
be a trumpet player or a sax player. Myn, percussion. Shalla, percussion
or trumpet. Piggy, percussion. Runt, bassoon. Ooryl, tuba. Inyri, flute
or clarinet. um, I just went brain dead. I'll add more when I think of
them.

That'd be my guess for him, too. Partly because he seems to fit the
trombone personality (and such an...interesting...one that is) and
partly because the guy in my marching band that reminds me most of Wes
happens to play trombone...

That reminds me. Was it Richard Strauss or some other composer who
said "Don't look at the trombones, you'll only encourage them"? Too
true... *G*

> Hobbie either french horn or percussion.

Percussion? Hm...I don't know about that. That's another of
those "attitude" things...I could definitely see Plourr on percussion,
but I don't know about Hobbie. French horn sounds good. Or maybe
contrabass clarinet, or string bass. He seems like a bass-y sort. :-)

> Tycho... hmmm... trumpet?

That's what I was thinking, too. Same thing as with Wes - the guy in
band that reminds me most of Tycho (though not nearly so much so as the
trombonist reminds me of Wes) plays trumpet. :-)

> Wedge is conductor, but if I gave him an
> instrument, I'd say sax.

Hm, that works.

> Iella, flute.

Cool by me. :-) I was trying to think who in the GFFA would make a good
flutist, and couldn't come up with anyone...Iella fits, though. I bet
Hallis would be suited to the flute, too. Maybe even alto flute.

Of course in my Rent a Rogue story I was trying to make Tycho a
flutist. Didn't work out so well. :-) We should probably leave him on
trumpet...

> Mirax is trumpet too.

*G* Definitely! No doubt about her! Yikes, scary, her and Corran both...

> Face would
> be a trumpet player or a sax player.

Hm...I don't know about Face. Trumpet or sax sounds fine, I can't think
of anything more suitable.

> Myn, percussion.

*G* That works. What about Lara? Hm...maybe violin or clarinet or flute
or percussion or...I don't know. You could almost pick a different
instrument for each of her identities, 'cause they're all so different
in personality...

> Shalla, percussion or trumpet.

I vote percussion. Or actually, she might make a good flutist, too. Has
that "cute-innocent" look but is actually deadly, and all that...No
wait! That would make her the piccolo player! :-)

> Piggy, percussion.

Good one! Voort, King of Rhythm...I would certainly be happy having HIM
on snare or quads. At least we know we'll be keeping time well.

> Runt, bassoon.

That works.

> Ooryl, tuba.

That, too.

> Inyri, flute
> or clarinet.

I don't know about flute...I think I'd sooner put Lujayne on flute than
Inyri. I might put Inyri on sax.

Hm...how about Elscol on French Horn with Groznik on Tuba?

Dllr...I bet he'd be the consummate pianist. Or the faithful audience
member, being such a music-lover and all...

Gavin I'd put on sax, largely because the pseudo-Gavin in my band is a
sax player. But I think Gavin fits the instrument anyway.

No way! Really? I never would have thought that...I mean, have you
ever heard of anyone tearing up over a trombone solo? The brass and
winds are most definitely louder than the string section, but volume has
*nothing* to do with mood. A cello can make anyone cry, as can a viola.
I mean, just listen to ROTJ soundtrack, track 2 (Luke and Leia). It's
the cellos that really get you right there.

Maybe I'm biased, since I'm a string player....I dunno. All I'm saying,
I guess is that strings are *expressive!*

I thought Wedge would make a good violist (Viola Power!). We need more
low-end strings in this orchestra!

I like that.

:::looks through pilot roster::: It kind of sucks for the string
section, because all our pilots really do have that band-ish attitude.
None of them are mellow enough to be string players (except Hobbie).
But since I'm biased, I'll shut up about the strings now.

No, don't! 'Cause I for one, having only ever played in string-deprived
band ensembles, have practically no idea whatsoever of the sorts of
personalities that would fit the different string instruments. I know
maybe three violinists in real life: my aunt, her daughter, and a girl
that's been in some Latin and English classes with me. Not a broad base
of examples for psychological studies. :-)

Anyway, what about the non-pilot SW characters--others in the GFFA who
are somehow connected to the flyboys/flygirls? What about Luke, Leia,
Han, Mara, Winter, Booster, etc...anyone in the broader galaxy who can
round out our string section?

> the cellos that really get you right there.

Mm...I would have to say that *all* the instruments lend mood to the
music--it's just that each one is particularly suited for a *different*
mood or moods. In Luke and Leia, it's the cellos, sure, but what about
the french horn and flute solos in Leia's Theme? They play the exact
same melody, but there's a subtly different mood from the horn's
version of it to the flute's version. Or, for example, brass is perfect
for a rousing, spirited, proud mood--like the little "Rebel fanfare"
motif that crops up often in the SW music, especially whenever
something happens that just calls for cheering. :-) Flutes, on the
other hand, are great for anything light, playful, whimsical, dancelike-
-like the melody in the Ewok theme. (And there's much more they're
perfect for, says Becki the flutist, but we won't belabor the point
*G*.) And so on...each instrument has that certain area in which it can
be used to the best effect.

And that, for me, is what's so marvellous about John Williams's music.
He's got a perfect sense of *when* and *where* to use each instrument,
what sounds best lend to what moods, what events should be highlighted
by what style of music.

...And now I realize that I have been in band *way* too long, and it's
an awfully good thing I am an English major. (Except of course for the
fact that all this about the sound/meaning connection sounds
suspiciously like something I've read in a literature class somewhere.
Probably Poetry. Eep.)

Hey, now here's a question for you. Suppose that Lucas, having
experienced an epiphany of the TAWG and realized the superiority of TGO
over all other story threads in the SW universe *G*, decided to follow
up Episodes I-III with a series of Rogue Squadron movies. Of course,
following the well-established and highly fortuitous precedent, he'll
have to call in John Williams to compose the music for this new RS
trilogy. Williams, in his usual masterly style, intends to approach the
RS trilogy as he did the Classic and Prequel trilogies: by composing
musical motifs to associate with each of the main characters, then
weaving those motifs into the music to highlight those characters'
parts in the movies.

In other words, just as we had Luke's Theme (aka Main Title) and Leia's
Theme, now we're going to have Wedge's Theme, Tycho's Theme, etc., etc.

So, what would those themes be like?

What instruments would convey the right mood for Wedge? For the others?

What style of music? Heroic fanfares for Wedge? Taanabian dancing tunes
for Wes? Something that sounds heavy-metal yet suspiciously *royal* for
Plourr?

Any comments? :-)

~Becki, who honestly is glad that marching and concert bands are over
now. Only basketball band remains. Go Sycamores!

Ooh, Leia would be a cellist! She's just got that cello air about her,
if you know what I mean. And for some reason, I see Winter playing the
oboe. Booster's easy: percussion, cymbals in particular. All I can see
is him slamming two Borsks together....hee hee......

I strongly agree with Wedge as Viola...partly because that means I get to
sit next to him <g>
The other reason is (In my own personal opinion) Strings rock..
(Plus he could fend off all the nasty jokes about violas by challenging them

Actually, havibng just finished off my Inyri fanfic (hint, hint) I'm
inclined to see Inyri playing the violin, simply because they always strike
me as the ones who get the least credit in the orchestra, and yet they're
the ones who I always hear above the rest, which spookily parallels my
feelings for Inyri. Of course, that may say more about me than her.

Well, Tionne (sp?) plays that shoebox/broomstick contraption. I imagine Mon
Mothma plays the piano. Is that a string instrument? Jacen I can see as a
violinist, while Anakin is a drummer, and Jaina a flautist.
Rostek Horn on oboe, Hal Horn as a pianist, Nejaa Halcyon on guitar, I
think.
Luke would surely play saxophone, Mara the drums, Han's a born trombonist,
while Chewie does a mean duet on keyboards with Lando.

Not for me to write it, but:

Winter to have a theme similar to Leia's, but lighter, more languid.
Wes has to have a calypso beat.
Hobbie's would be lot's of strings, with a single clarinet wailing away.
Wedge would have something stirring -Here's a Leader, follow him!- that
would be based on the clebration theme from the ANH awards ceremony theme.
Tycho's would have a hearkening to his Imperial past, occasional bursts of
the Imperial March, but generally calm, almost cold.
Corran's would be all energy, impatient strings leading the brass section
along.
Gavin's could be a reworking of Luke's farmboy theme.
Inyri and Lujayne would have *very* similar theme's, more hard edged for
Inyri, though.

That's my opinion, but as I stand in the midst of a cluster of musicians
with more practise and familiarity with arrangin music, I shall bow to wiser
leads.

Yep, think a *big* tambourine, about 40cm across, only it doesn't have any
cymbals around the side. You get the sound by drumming it with a small duble
headed stick, or the flat of your hand, and you can rum pretty much any part
of it.

I like that. Makes sense, with all that Leia-doubling business. I would
see Winter's theme being very regal, though, since growing up she was
the more "ladylike" of the two, maybe kind of formal-sounding.
Renaissance style, maybe, or Victorian, or something.

> Wes has to have a calypso beat.

*G* That could work...every time I consider Wes's theme, that image
from SoA of him walking away from the blastsword duel, whistling a
Taanabian dancing tune, comes to mind. I wonder what Taanabian dancing
tunes are like?

> Hobbie's would be lot's of strings, with a single clarinet wailing

Ooh, I like! And in a minor key. Minor's so good for that mournful
tone. :-)

> Wedge would have something stirring -Here's a Leader, follow him!-

I definitely agree on the need for a stirring theme for Wedge. I think
it would be good to mix in more mellow parts, though, since he always
seems to be reflecting on the responsibilities life throws at him and
that sort of thing...and maybe just a little bit of a capricious touch,
since he's always going off doing something "Roguish" contrary to the
expectations of both his superiors and his enemies...

> Tycho's would have a hearkening to his Imperial past, occasional
bursts of
> the Imperial March, but generally calm, almost cold.

Tycho's theme might be the hardest of all to get right. There's just so
much to him. I like the idea of mixing in the Imperial March. But if it
should be cold in parts, he also could be awfully hot-tempered, at
least in the comics...I think also there ought to be the same sort of
formality and regal-ness I'd put in Winter's theme. Regal-ness seems to
be a general Alderaanian characteristic...

> Corran's would be all energy, impatient strings leading the brass
section
> along.

Oh yes! Very good! I can see (hear?) Corran's theme having a lot of
syncopation to hint at his restless energy, but also passages with a
steady, on-the-beat feel to characterize his role as an agent of
Law...Wow, how does one characterize in music a character who is
Corsec, Pilot, and Jedi--how to get all that in? How do you show his
Corellianness?

> Gavin's could be a reworking of Luke's farmboy theme.

Could be. Maybe as a sort of sweet-and-simple ballad, to highlight his
general naivete and optimism.

Good idea!

I like these ideas...anyone else have input?

Y'know, I've done some MIDI arranging. Nothing fancy--at first I just
arranged the school song and alma mater for use in an ISU screen saver
I made, later I put together a few simple tunes of my own. I think I'll
see if I can't come up with anything in the way of Rogue themes.
Nothing very complex but I might be able to at least work out some
melodies or something...

OK, night out cancelled, so here we go:

Face - hearkening back to his holo actor past, somthing similar to the
Oscars music, but with a touch of funky organ music (a la Phantom of the
Opera) to signify that this is a man with hidden beauty.
Phanan - simple piano/violin tune, (think Corr's second album) somewhat
light, but with hints of something more maudlin beneath
Ooryl - the Uber Gand (I love that) has a very oriental air to it. Gongs,
plinky guitars, that sort of thing. how that would mesh with Corran's theme
is something for some else to work out.
Kell - a brooding, sax led piece, that explodes into a hard, edgy drum solo
whenever Wes is around, and descends into sharp, fast notes when he's flying
Tyria - hints of the Jedi theme, but much more a taut, skittish piccoo
sound, jumping nervily around the scale.
Myn - a deep, throaty sound, a oboe perhaps, playing slowly, joined
irregularly by a orchestra wide cluster of echoey instruments, faintly
heard, but drowning out the oboe (a touch heavy handed, perhaps).
Kirney Slane - woodwind, slowly building to an accomapniment with the brass
section, which then takes over
Gara Petothel - languid strings, sexy, lounge room piano
Lara Notsil - constantly changing, a full orchestra taking turns to try and
match the changes in her as her character evolves.

Anyone else wanna go at the others?

Ooh, neat! Pentatonic! *tries to remember how Variations on a Korean

The question is, how do you put third-person references to oneself in
music? *G*

It would be cool for her, if we had a simple theme of some sort, and
put it through all sorts of variations to imply the different
identities/changes in her character. I'm not sure what sort of theme
the basic theme would be though.

> Anyone else wanna go at the others?

Hm, let's see. For Runt, we'd probably need multiple themes--one for
each mind. :-) Or variations as for Lara.

Shalla: Something jazzy...optimistic, confident, high-spirited.

Elassar: Now this could be fun. *G* Maybe something spooky-sounding for
all those superstitions. And a bright fanfare for "Master of the
Universe"...

What for Kettch? Something elusive, maybe, mysterious and fairy-tale-
like?

Oh, we ought to have themes for the bad guys, too. What would work for
Zsinj, Melvar, Trigit, Isard, Loor, Derricote? And how about Fel's
theme? And for that matter, Wynssa/Syal's?

Hmmm, going by U of Idaho typecasting, Wes would *have* to be a

It seems to me that the Rogues practically have their own theme in the Rogue
Squadron game. (That annoying one that is cool the first time you hear it,
but gets tedious everytime it blares out whenever you start the game). There
