Hi, folks.

Another newsgroup I subscribe to was forwarded the following
message from Patrick Nielsen Hayden of TOR Books (combine the URL):

http://x58.deja.com/threadmsg_ct.xp?thitnum=7&mhitnum=0&
CONTEXT=963421270.1703018562

It's basically a heads-up: Apparently, deja.com, when displaying
your USENET messages in their archive, adds links to certain words.
Using the example Mr. Hayden gives, the word "memory" in your post
can become a link to a review of the book Memory by Bujold. Without
your intention or consent. Some of the links have advertising
content.

I haven't been able to see an instance of this--following the
thread "Deja.com adding unauthorized links to Usenet posts" in
rec.arts.sf.fandom, one understands that the links appear in some
viewing conditions and do not in others. Nonetheless, it's
definitely Not A Nice Thing To Do. I don't know if any of my
previous messages have been doctored so, but I don't really care
whose have been, it's still not nice.

Since the copyright of every word we post here actually belongs to
the author _and_ since there are people who read this group that
earn their bread through written word, I thought you'd like the
heads-up yourselves.

I'm off to write a similar warning to RASSM, if they didn't
receive it before.

Peace,

**** A new definition of "respect".

I'm glad I don't understand it...but what does it mean? I'm intrigued.
I suppose it's meaningless gibberish, meant as a humourous take on strange
internet shorthand used by geeks & nerds everywhere....but it does look as
if it *could* almost mean something...

Hi there,

It was Wed, 12 Jul 2000... Philip Veale spoke words of wisdom:

Hey, that's mine :-).

A Geek Code _is_ a kind of Internet shorthand, inspired by PGP
security signatures, that tells you about the owner. In my case, it
starts by stating that I'm a Geek of Engineering, MUsic, Science and
Literature; and branches on from there. If you cut it and paste it
into the decoder at http://www.ebb.org/ungeek/ it will give you the
complete meaning. Since the system is not 100% accurate it's only an
approximate Morwen you get, but it's better than nothing :-).

Peace,

It was the Prophetess' place to break the news to you, but since

*A Morning Poem*
I woke early one morning,
The earth lay cool and still,
When suddenly a tiny bird,
Perched on my window sill,
He sang a song so lovely,
So carefree and so gay,
That slowly all my troubles,
Began to slip away,
He sang of far off places,
Of laughter and of fun,
I stirred beneath the covers,
Crept slowly out of bed,
Then gently shut the window,
And crushed his f%&#ing head,
I'm not a morning person.

Sorry, sorry.....been off the Usenet for a few days. :o)

Well, this as good a lead-in as I can think of. Hey, all, Morwen and I
have worked up an AFW version of the oh-so-popular Geek Code. It's
still in beta version, so we welcome any and all
suggestions/comments/whatever. Please help us tweak it!

Go here:

And have fun with that!

Kristy- Morwen! This is hilarious. You guys did a great job with it.
Finally, a geek code that I can understand..hehee.
Of course my fave part is the "WEB" code...lol. And speaking of the
campaign- how are the polls going??
I still have a few bumperstickers left if anyone wants a set. :)

<deep bow> Live to serve, and all that.

Bringing arcane knowledge to the masses since 1978 ;-).

You know, Kristy's initial reaction to the TAWG entry was almost
the same, for some reason ;-) <bows again> You both deserve it.

> And speaking of the campaign- how are the polls going??

Polls? Can you tell that I can't wait for Quiara to get back
online?

This brings me to something else I wanted to mention--I want to
collect people's AFW Geek Codes and display them in the page. To
date, only Emily and Shanon displayed theirs in the group--do you
two mind if I grab them? And others, just make 'em up and send'em to
me...

Yah, me too. Isn't election time November or something?

I don't mind at all.
Do I need to add this:

might help? hehee If I post anywhere else, no one will understand it. Or is
that the point?? Hey, is this like a secret handshake? ;)
