If Quiara were here, she'd be dragging out the soapbox; I do it
now.
<climbs on soapbox>
I was going to answer some of the 2978340 posts that I came back
after a two-day hiatus and saw and was dumbstruck with, but I
decided it is wiser to put everything I wanted to say in a single
post. This is addressed to a lot of people, some of which I will
address by name: DBG, Jim, Kelly Grosskreutz and active Bousshers
please read on, especially.
First, darth Bluegum.
Good courage to start the subject, except the suggestion it took
courage isn't one I agree with, and I don't like the implications of
it. This newsgroup doesn't bite. If you think you've seen flames
here, go to rec.arts.sf.written.robert-jordan ---they glass-factory
people there for half of your stylistic choices or saying "a lot of
silent people support me in e-mail". I mean it. That's the way
things work in large newsgroups. But AFW isn't large, its whole
atmosphere is different, and that's why I love it. As long as we
don't abuse it.
You're entitled to your opinion, I might agree with some parts of
it, but your way of putting it is nothing less than horrendous.
Making the subject line "You self indulgent facististical
Hitleristic Egomaniac" (I'm assuming you're trying to say "fascist")
isn't the way to put your opinions out on a public forum. On a more
formal newsgroup, that title would end the discussion right there
and then by invoking Godwin's Law. "Fear the wrath of the Sith" and
"I know where you live" _would_ result in you going home crying for
Mommy if you _did_ actually find me and said it in my presence. I
mean that, too.
Grow up and learn how to discourse civilly. End of that
discussion. Read on, I've more to say to you.
For the other points you've addressed, I don't really know what
started the rant, but I suspect it was a piece you wrote for Boussh
not getting included in the archive. Well, guess what, I'm part of
the Boussh mailing list and get about 20 _organizational_ e-mails
there per day [1]. This has been public knowledge for a while that
there's a underlying structure to the madness and that people are
trying to make the madness more organized. I'm sorry if you weren't
aware of that. I also suspect scifantasy wasn't very tactful in
explaining this to you, judging by your reaction, and I'm sorry
about that too.
But "I used to have fun here" and especially "There are no threads
now that I want to read" sound the error buzzer. If there are no
threads you want to read, you start one. It's been like that and
will always be like that since USENET first crawled out of the
woodwork. If you want to sit back and have fun reading what others
have written for you all the time, you buy a magazine.
Jim and Kelly and the others in "anonymous discussion" in ICQ and
the chat rooms, and the semi-regulars who share those views:
I agree with you, partly. The thing has grown very large. On the
other hand, it's clearly marked, and it's thirty seconds of fiddling
with your newsreader to ignore it, so I wasn't complaining about
that. It's not smothering the newsgroup, not killing other
discussions, and from what I have been able to follow, it's actually
winding up.
_But_ if you had spoken up earlier, instead of complaining
privately amongst yourselves, this current screamfest wouldn't have
happened. Both of you are people I know, respect, and I know you
are capable of putting your views civilly. I'm guilty of this too.
I was expecting this reaction about Boussh from someone sooner or
later. Since I was at least nominally part of the writer line-up,
maybe I should have spoken up about the feelings and readings I was
getting from the non-Boussh people. I'm regretting this.
Non-communication and expecting others to be sensitive to your
feelings/thoughts if you don't reveal them openly. I've seen so
relationships ruined because of that fundamental error it isn't even
funny. Here's another commandment for us all. "Thou Shalt
Communicate."
(And, starting other threads about things you want to talk about
works, you know.)
About Mike and Aaron being silent recently. I don't know about
Aaron, but if you read the personal news page that Mike has, some of
his recent silence comes into perspective. Add to that the fact
that last I heard, February--this month--was going to be the
deadline for turning in the _Fortress Draconis_ manuscript, I don't
think he's been doing newsgroups recently at all. We've had periods
of silence from them before. We've posted fanfiction before. They
know what to avoid, since the thread is marked very, very clearly.
I wouldn't blame Boussh for their absence.
Active Bousshers:
Many people have been left out, many people dropped out, many
people are not able to follow the storyline any more. None of these
are facts that can be denied.
You are also having a lot of fun doing this, and I've actually
seen some of you developing your ideas about Star Wars, about
writing, characterization and plotting through Boussh--I'm willing
to bet Vickie, for instance, has a whole new and detailed outlook on
the Jedi philosophy now--and how big a plus _that_ is cannot be
denied either. That side of it everyone else is missing, however.
And the whole scene does seem a little elitist because the
underlying organization isn't clear on this. That's why the project
is under bombardment, currently.
The project will have to take the bombardment. Taking defense too
far only results in hurting and wounds everywhere. Now is where we
turn the other cheek--even though we might feel that it's an unjust
accusation. Yes, this _is_ in fact me extending the olive
branch. It's the shortest way to avoid ill-feeling.
I love AFW, and seeing it hurt because of this makes me hurt
worse. Also angry, though I'm trying to suppress it.
Besides, if I'm not mistaken, the story's already almost over
anyway.
But I wouldn't know for sure--I wasn't able to follow it recently
:-).
<doesn't get off the soapbox. She's waiting.>
[1] Confession in case other Boushhers didn't know this: I'm not
reading them. I'm not really part of the timeline even though I'm
present as a character. I've left my fate in others' hands and am
happy with it--I just don't have the time.

This is what happens when you sort according to subject, read the
thread names that seem most suspicious, and blow up.
A lot of my "speech" is now irrelevant, since apparently AFW
balanced it out in itself afterwards--which I'd missed among the 322
unread posts.
As an excuse, I should mention that both the speed and the strength
of my reaction arose from a deep, deep concern--I really love it
here, I really love most of the regulars, and a rift threatening
also threatened to tear me apart. Fear _doth_ lead to the dark
side, as I've learned now.
DBG, I also saw your apology post--very well-written apology
post-- late, and I'm sorry, since you got the brunt of my earlier
rant. You have proven yourself capable of civil discourse, and I'm
sorry again.
_Now_ I can climb off the soapbox.
I'm proud of y'all who stepped back, however, and reconsidered and
reposted. Consider this my reconsidering and reposting. If I knew
how to cancel the original, I would.

I'm glad that you don't have a way to cancel it, friend Morwen.
I was glad to see that you have been around and doing well. Reading your
observations has given me clarity to a lot of things. I stayed out of the
whole thing largely because I am known to blow up unneccesarily and I
recently posted that nobody seems to reply to my posts. I suppose I should
have responded, yet logically and not emotionally. But as they say, *whack*
"That is in the past."
However, I must say, after the hundreds of posts from the past two days,
today has been rather quiet. Is it not strange? If you will make note, I did
make a non-Boussh, on-topic post today. Aren't you proud? ;) Maybe it will
bring people out of the woodwork like this "altercation" has. Boussh is
slowly, but steadily coming to an end (my prediction is within the next 2-3
weeks it will be fini). After that, I hope we all can just get along as we
used to.
I took about a 6 month hiatus from the ng last year. Why? Because there
wasn't anything grabbing my attention. When I came back and read Boussh, I
just had to get involved. It seemed perfect for me. Through Boussh, I have
made many new friends. I'd like to make friends with you non-Bousshers. But,
I suppose that will come in time. I hope we continue to have topics that
will grasp my attention even after PB goes away.
Anyway, that's enough of me spouting bs.

This is correct. I'm horribly busy and probably will continue to be so,
and thus only occasionally communicative, through August, if not later.
I have a kill filter set up for Project Boushh posts, not out of

That's great news, Aaron. For two reasons. 1 - you're not staying away

No - Isard being the Emperor's mistress.

Josh.
This one should get Mike covered in DMIGAs.

It was Wed, 14 Feb 2001... Josh Nolan spoke words of wisdom:

Yup. I wasn't thinking about the Vong scenes because those are
disturbing, but not Disturbing-Mental-Image disturbing.
However, _this_ certainly qualifies in my mind...
I think Janson's naked backside in Solo Command DEFINITELY earned him a DMIGA.
As to something in Michael Stackpole's writing... Plenty of puns, but nothing
to make me go "eww..."
Oh! Erisi. That should be enough.
Hmmm... Now that I think about it, if Erisi alone didn't get him a DMIGA, think
of the charred corpse scene in I, Jedi...
::shudder::
