I've been wanting to ask Michael Stackpole since I read "I Jedi" (just after it came out in paperback) if he knows Southeastern American Indians.
The story of Corran Horn in a very real way mimics my life and the life of some of the members of my tribe. I didn't learn until I was in my mid 20s that the man I was taught was my grandfather wasn't, and in my mid 30s I learned that I was really American Indian and not white. I'd encountered members of my tribe and it was from them (4th and 5th cousins) that I learned about my heritage - my family had fled the Trail of Tears and succeeded as passing as white a long time ago.
When "I Jedi" was written, it came at a time when I was dealing with the fallout from learning that most of what I'd learned about myself was a lie, and the book was a huge help in dealing with the issues.
Corran Horn's experiences so closely matched (in a way) those of many Southeastern Native Americans that I wonder if Michael Stackpole is part American Indian himself, or is familiar with us.
