Hello! I've been lurking for a while and posted a few times, but never
really introduced myself. I'm allowed to check this only periodicaly (my
parents punish us by taking away computer priledges). My favorite books have
to be the Wraiths ones, as they have the funniest characters. Wes Janson is
my favorite character.

Okay, I've bored everyone enough, you can get on with your lives now...
--

On your way back, I'd like for you to repeat the "Life with Sarah" mantra:
Sarah is always right. I will listen to Sarah. I will not ignore Sarah's
recommendations. Sarah is God. And, if this ever happens again, Sarah will
personally rip your lungs out!

"It's like I've always said. You can get more with a kind word and a two by
four than you can with just a kind word."

NOTE TO SELF: Non-flammable is not a challenge.

It's a slight revision of the "Babylon 5 Mantra", from episode #119, "A

original version.

She's proven in the past that nothing is enough of an incentive for her, not

Have you played Battle for Naboo as well? If not, you should. Slightly
improved rendering, no crashes when I run it at low-res with the expansion
pak, the high-res doesn't choke anymore, and more variances between the
ships. Plus two space missions.

I've only played the N64 version, but I'd guess that the controls would seem
more natural for it - I'd keep trying to hit the buttons for the X-Wing

OTOH a PC screen isn't 320x240 with 'hardware anti-aliasing' - screen

Hello!

Yet another newbie.
I decided to check this group out after someone on alt.fan.pratchett
suggested it. Is that Someone hanging around here?

I'm actually not as much a Wedge fan as I am a Corran fan, but from what
I've read that doesn't really seem to matter.

Now when I say Newbie I do mean Newbie. the only way I've figured out how
to post is by replying to other posts. This may have something to do with
the fact that where I am I can only read mail and newsgroups on a UNIX
terminal. I'm a lifelong Windows user. My knowledge of coping with UNIX
can be about summed up by the words: If you type pine you can read your
mail.

Feel free to flame, but help would be more appreciated.

You can read newsgroups on UNIX? Wow...

Um, that's not much help, is it? Sorry...

However, we like Corran here, so feel free to talk about him, too. Really,
we like all the rebel pilots, which is probably why Kristy, i guess, chose
www.rebelpilots.com as the home of our archive (www.rebelpilots.com/afw to
be exact, although the main group has a fine collection of pilot related
stuff, including what may be the finest fanfic ever -should it ever be
finished- in Alisa Choate's Return To Innocence. And no, I don't get
commission when people read that, I just think it's great)

Anyway...

Welcome to AFW, the freindliest group on Usenet, and allow me to present you
with your first newbie gift, a brand new, freshly pinted voucher for a go on
my X-Wing sim, with new Naboo based mission

Hi,

It was Thu, 26 Apr 2001... Majick spoke words of wisdom:

> > Now when I say Newbie I do mean Newbie. the only way I've figured out how
> > to post is by replying to other posts. This may have something to do with
> > the fact that where I am I can only read mail and newsgroups on a UNIX

> >
> You can read newsgroups on UNIX? Wow...

Um, er, like, yes.

Check my headers.

There are several newsreaders--I've heard people swear by slrn, by
tin, and by trn (to run them, you type their names at the command
prompt). Your system might have any and all of these installed.

Me? I use pine. For news, too.

Any UNIX purist will mock me mercilessly for reading news on pine,
but I have my reasons:

1. I'm so used to its controls that we are merged at the
Han Solo--Millenium Falcon level. I could use it
with my eyes tied, except reading the mail and
posts to form intelligent replies would be a little
difficult in that case.

2. I don't know what's _wrong_ with it, actually. It can't
do threading--yet, it's in the works for new
versions--but I have managed splendidly without.
It _can_ organize according to subject line, author,
date, or whatever. It snips .sigs, attributes
correctly on multiple levels, linewraps correctly
(as opposed to _seeming_ to linewrap), has a good
folder system, and allows one user to have multiple
"roles" each with their own headers and .sig files.

3. It doesn't have a killfile, true. Or it has something
called filters that are a little complicated to
learn, and I never bothered.

Welcome to the madness.

Nope, not at all. Lately we've been having quite a few Wes fans post.
Sometimes it seems this group should be named alt.fan.wes. As a fellow
Corran fan, I welcome you to our group, and invite you to check out the link
in my signature.

Hey, I spent my entire college career using that. Even after I got Outlook
Express and a service provider outside of my campus, I still telnetted to
the unix account a friend kindly let me use and used Pine to read this
group. It's only recently I started using OE. Using Unix by no means
denotes a newbie.

A very good point. And given the the joystick for my computer isn't all that
great I'm leaning towards N64. But from what I've found the N64 version costs
more. What's a girl to do.

Is that your way of saying a PC would get better resolution? Or is my
universal translator not working properly. (opps - wrong galaxy) ;-)

Thanks for the input.

I come down heavily on the side of the PC, because I really hate the
N64 controller and can't see spending more money for the same game.

Yes. That's my way of saying the PC will give better than twice the
resolution. :)

It's OE for Mac... slightly paradoxical, and somewhat better put-together
than the PC version, or so I've been told...

The fact it actually does everything you want it to tends to suggest so...

I've never had -major- problems with OE, but when I tried Forte Agent after
a system wide dying last year, I couldn't work out why it wouldn't let me
access Usenet. So I'm, for once, on Big Bad Bill's side

Hiya, Iris! We're glad to have you. Several Pterry fans around here...we
even had a Pterry thread once and it was archived for posterity!

Speaking of which, in-jokes and wierdnesses explained:

Nope! This is really just Pilot Central.

In pine you can set your newsgroup settings and read them just like
mail...hit "'compose" to post, etc...I would elaborate, but I'm sure
someone already did. :-) (If not, I'll be back.)

Good to have you around! :o)

Yes--and the fact that it was a cool site, and Jim gives me free hosting,
because he's awesome that way.

It would be better if it was added to! (Allisa, you out there? ::g::)

--Prophet Kristy
that was just a jab. It really is a great story, though.

I did - i just hit reply to sender instead of reply to newsgroup...

Cheers,
Nick.

Actually, Pine works quite nicely for usenet.
http://www.washington.edu/pine/ is, of course, the Pine site o' power...

Just because I'm feeling like wasting bandwidth, here's how to set Pine up
for newsreading from their FAQ: (note: you need to know the name of your
ISP's news server)

1.Choose the "S Setup" command from the [M]AIN MENU.
2.Select "C Config".
3.Use the down-arrow-key to select the option nntp-server.
4.Press "A Add Value" to this option. Type in the name of the news
server for your site, then press Return. You will need
to get this information from your local computing/network support
staff. A typical news server name would be:
"news.nowhere.edu" (this one is fictional).
5.Press "E Exit Setup, save your modifications; you are returned to the
MAIN MENU.
6.Press "Q" to Quit Pine; then restart Pine. This is necessary to have
the above configuration change take effect.
7.After restarting Pine, choose the FOLDER LIST screen by pressing "L
LstFldrs" from the [M]AIN MENU.
8.Select "News-collection" (you can press the spacebar to move to the
news-collection, which will be the last item in the
FOLDER LIST (COLLECTION LIST in Pine 4) screen.)
9.Press Return if you see: [ Select Here to See Expanded List ]. If you
have used a different newsreader
previously, you probably already have a news subscription file with
your favorite newsgroups listed. If not, you need to
add some...
10.Press "A Add" to add more news groups to your news subscription file.
If you know the name of the group you wish to
subscribe to, enter it at the prompt and press Return; otherwise, use
the "^T To All Grps" command. Select the
desired group and press Return. Repeat to add more groups.
11.Once you have newsgroups displayed in the FOLDER LIST, you may select
them just like mail folders.

Oh. Pffft. Well, now there are some instructions here on the NG, too.

Nope. I even sat down with my computer god friend who swears by Forte Agent,
and he took me through the setup procedure. it just didn't like me
