With the exception of the apparent new poster in the ninth position, the top
posters are more or less par for the course.

And I got seventh this month, which is a surprise to me; I didn't think I
posted *that* much.

I'm at #3? *Between* DQ and Katherine? (0.o) And I seem to recall
that I had 20 posts last month in January, too.

The stats thread has more than twice the posts of the next runner up.

If you drop the "u", you get a fan group for Akio.

Akio: What are you talking about?
Laurie: "alt.fan.unigroper". Universal groping?
Akio: *hmph*

Still need to work to get back to our pre-holiday levels.

Then Ute's a cross-dresser. Ute Lemper came to my town last year, for a
performance. She's a singer. There was even a photo of her in the
paper; a rather attractive woman actually.

Hee. It was in my head that day.

Actually, now that I think about it, I more imagine Ruka singing it to
Jury (that or "Miracles" by Jefferson Starship)

I'm painting a loosely-Utena-themed Warhammer 40K (if not familiar,
think Gothic Intergalactic Sci-Fi done with minature figurines) army.
Maybe I'llpost a pic of Sister of Battle Utena up when she's done.
We'll see how Utena in a battle suit works out.

(Nanami works very well in a battle suit, btw--I've already done her)

(Incidentally, I would never build a Warhammer army if someone else
weren't providing me with the models. They're damned expensive!)

Mmm. Maybe. If I actually liked the Gundam series I'd consider it, but
I'm not a big fan.

But talking of other anime-to-Warhammer conversions, I'd like to do a

It is. Basically, NXE is Eva done *better*, IMO. None of Hideaki Anno's "fsck

I'm not one of the "infuriated and awestruck", quite the contrary. But I do
recommend NXE - it's actually better than the anime it's derived from, IMAO.
"Symphony of the Sword", on the other hand, went a little too far with the
Kitchen Sink approach. I didn't stick with it long enough to get to the Utena
parts.

I guess I should qualify my comments on UF/SotS. I thought UF was funny and
kinda cute, even for a massive multiple self-insert fanfic. With the exception
of Taco Night on the Klingon battlecruiser, though, the rest of it was just way,
way too overdone. It would be like yours truly doing a self-insert into the
Utenaverse and winding up as Juri's one-and-only by the middle of the second
season...after having discovered that she's actually the great-granddaughter of
Pallas Athena. You get the picture.

Saionji: *raises one eyebrow* As if that's not what *you're* here to
see, too.
Laurie: Maybe he was here to steal Katherine away.
Saionji: Then Mikage will be all alone, and lonely.
Laurie: Right! You're his friend, you should do something about that.

Laurie: So, Katherine, does this have to be an open-faced samich, or
what?

It is old, but it's pretty good, really. Basically "Girls With Guns" or
"Babes In Battlesuits". "Bubblegum Crisis" is the full title. Was one
of the earlier titles to be commercially brought over to the US.

Ah. I think Anj has mentioned this; I know the title. Outside of Kimba,
Speed Racer, and Marine Boy many years back - my anime started with Utena.
Well, actually, it started with Fatal Fury but my first subbed, *good* anime
was Utena.

Spammer who sends out "Make Money Fast" chain letters. I ran a Google
Groups search on him and found that he was very popular over on
news.lists.filters. Here's the Google link to the search:

And here is the link showing how many times he's spammed this group *alone*:

BTW, all the recent messages come from Rogers Cable, which is in Ontario,

One of the few male movie actors that can make me melt. Ever since I
was a teenager and he swashed his buckle so engagingly in "Willow"...
what is it so tempting about a roguish swordsman?

Saionji told me. That's what he said he saw when Mikage took him on a
tour of the crypt. He was amazed that Mikage just left them there, and
that he knew the names of *every* slot.

I'm so glad I found my news server in Germany. BTW, they're now called
"news.individual.net" if anyone wants to sign up. It's still free.

"Bubblegum Crisis", "Project A-Ko" and "Vampire Princess Miyu" were some
of my earlies anime that I actually knew were anime. I did watch
"Princess Knight", "Star Blazers" and "G-Force" (Gatchaman?) at earlier
points, but hadn't figured out why they were so different from "normal"
cartoons.

Well, we Sag's love that - too much of the same old, same old and we run for

Juri, or I, would complain if we actually were in a serious relationship.

Yeah, hard dollars are difficult to argue with.

Touga: All of my dollars are "hard", and I've got a lot of them,
bay-bee.

So what does it mean that Nanami and I have birthdays one day apart? A

Laurie: Sure, it would mean she laughs at things that don't prompt most
people to laugh.
Saionji: I guess that follows. What about you, my Prince?

Babes in battlesuits indeed, doing serious ultra-violence against the oppressive

Laurie: Have fun, bye.

Muah, ha, ha! Who knows what evil lurks in the heart of snAFU? ]:-}

More seriously, old habits die hard, including being the newsgroup

Objectively, Val Kilmer (Say, DQ, didn't you like him as Bruce Wayne/Batman,
too?), as the rest are anime groups. In terms of which groups usually show
up here, Bubblegum Crisis. Two people are responsible for it being here
when it usually isn't (Google search shows that there was a 1-year hiatus in
crosspostings between the two groups)--Jeanne Hedge, who was looking for
Fanfic panelists for Anime Central (Laurie, Katherine, and Kevin are all
Midwesterners and fanfic writers--maybe this would be a good opportunity for
you!), and Gaza, a known anti-otaku troll posting under two of his aliases.
The first person, IMHO, was legit; the second was trying a rather
over-intellectual troll, which failed--he aimed too *high*. My experience
indicates that being overly intellectual only works as a troll on a very
lowbrow group. That's *not* our problem!

I can go farther back. I watched Kimba on the first US station to show it,
KHJ in Los Angeles, back in 1965 or 1966. I also remember Astro Boy,
Amazing Three, Gigantor, and 8th Man (in black and white!) in addition to
the ones Katherine mentioned. Even as a 8- to 10-year-old, I could tell
there was something different about these cartoons compared to American
ones, but somehow they were all similar to each other. They handled serious
material in a way that was understandable to children but didn't condescend
to them. The women were also consistently prettier (some things don't
change). I could certainly tell that they were *not* produced by
Hanna-Barbara, Filmation, DePatie-Freleng, Rankin-Bass, Bob Clampett, Warner
Brothers, Disney, MGM, Terrytoons, Fleischer/Famous Studios, Harveytoons, or
Jay Ward! I remember one day when I was watching Kimba the White Lion
(*cough* Jungle Emperor Leo *cough*) and made a point of watching the
credits to see who produced it. Much to my surprise, I recognized all the
names as Japanese and then saw that the studio responsible was *not* any of
the American ones with which I was familiar. I thought, ah, those are all
*Japanese* cartoons. No wonder they are different! More than 30 years ago,
the seeds of my fandom were sown.

I didn't start my current phase of watching then (late 80s/early 90s), but I
was a member of Don't Panic, the University of Michigan's Science Fiction
and Fantasy Club. A major branch of that club run Animania and raved about
their anime showings all through the 90s on the club's message board. I
don't know about Don't Panic, but Animania is as vibrant as ever, and my
daughter and I are regular attendees. BTW, I have my daughter to thank for
bringing me into anime fandom. She can thank Cartoon Network for showing
Sailor Moon, Tenchi Muyo, Outlaw Star, and Dragonball. Hey, we all had to
start somewhere!

I watched Star Blazers every weekday at 3 PM when I lived in Boston during
the summer of 1981. It was my soap opera. And, yes, made a point of
watching it *because* it was Japanese!

Now, all we need is for Scortia to show up.

I'm not that well-known a fanfic writer - most of the stuff that's mine that's
finished and published online is actually "Space:Above and Beyond" fanfic if you
measure by quantity. On the other hand, "Shojo Kakumei Ukyo" dwarfs all three of
the S:AAB fics, so...I dunno. Either way, I don't really feel qualified to be a
panelist.

Unlike most folks who watch anime, I didn't care that much for Speed Racer, but
Kimba was okay. It was obviously foreign, but it didn't make enough of an
impression for me to seek out and watch other anime...I did see a copy of "Space
Cruiser Yamato" in '78 which I thought was hideously cheesy, but after that I
didn't see any anime until I was forced to sit down and watch "Castle In The
Sky" and "El Hazard" sometime in the late 1990s, at which time I was well and
truly hooked.

*ahem* certain areas?

Well, that's more dependent on the circumstances for me. Quick on the
uptake on certain things, I'd say probably yes. In other areas, I can
be pretty darn clueless.

Touga: Yes, but that just adds to your charm. *smile* And so you're
charming... and it just so happens that I'm charming too...

Touga: *procures crumpled piece of paper* And look how much she spends

Touga: *raises eyebrow* Mmm hmm. And weren't you talking with
Katherine that one time about how you love to flirt? What a
coincidence, I love to flirt too.
DQ: Stop it! I'm nothing like you! I'm... I'm NOT popular, and I don't
do kendo, and I don't string gaggles of girls along like they're toys!
And I... I... well, dammit, I bet I'm about three times more
masculine!
Touga: *tosses hair, nonchalant* Was that meant to be a low blow?
DQ: You wouldn't feel it if it was!
Touga: *tsks* Are we afraid of our true nature?
DQ: True nature my bum! Fine, we have things in common. *smiles,
suddenly very engaging* You into roleplaying?
Touga: *surprised, then gives sultry smile* Sure, I'm willing always

I had a dream once about meeting a "real" Shiori. She was... very
interesting. ^^ The dream-image was very vivid though... I can still
very clearly picture her, same eye and hair color but "real" 3D
proportions. I can see the face clearer than I can remember some real
faces... it's very weird. I think if I ever saw that face in real
life, I'd lose it.

NEMURO HALL

Katherine: *answers door, while still lacing up leather shirt* Touga? What
. . . *lowers voice* It's Friday, the one night I can get away without him
noticing and you're here? I'll be there soon enough. Once all his little
gaming buddies arrive.
Touga: Er . . .well . . . you see . . . I'll be here tonight.
Katherine: What?! Are you crazy? He's not all there alot of the time but I
think he'd notice you.
Touga: I won't be with you. I'll be with . . . them. That's why I'm here
early. I need to talk to the mushroom about this gaming thing.
Katherine: You. Must. Be. Joking. -_-
Touga: Well, um, DQ sorta' tricked me.
Katherine: Oh? This should be interesting.
Touga: So . . . Is he here?
Katherine: Touga Kiryuu, in about an hour my basement will be chock full of
nerds and I intend to be far away from here. If that means I'm going out
with Saionji, or bowling with Juri, I will do so. And I sincerely doubt
Mikage will take the time to explain this . . . PGR (~_^) thing to you.
Touga: Maybe you can explain?
Katherine: Are you kidding? I'm still trying to understand it all and I go
to DQ when I have questions. You couldn't charm it out of her?
Touga: Well . . .

Katherine: Mmm hmm. Even though you don't.

Katherine: Nothing! Hey, you're early, aren't you?
Touga: Yes you are!
DQ: I need to go over your character sheet with you. You've listed
some skills that don't exist.
Touga: *crosses arms* The skills were inadequate to describe what I

> too?),

He was of course good, but I prefer him in the more roguish roles of
his earlier days. Yum.

Batman as a character doesn't really turn me on in the least, so his
sexy affect was muted for me.

As far as being able to play Batman, I preferred Keaton in the role...
but then I also overall liked the Burton flicks a lot better than what
came after.

Interesting. I grew up with Speed Racer, Voltron (Go-lion) and
Robotech (Macross)... I liked Robotech a lot but thought the others
were pretty cheesy (granted, all were edited quite a bit). This is not
to say I didn't like them. ^^ I think I was at the time far too
enamoured of the Superfriends (itself in recollection very cheesy) to
think of anything as better. And I thought the people with the giant
eyes looked funny. ^^ I did learn later that was "Japanimation" but
didn't think much of it as different from anything else.

I didn't get into anime or really even understand what it was until
college when the pres of the anime and gaming club used to have
showings every once in awhile, and I caught bits of Ranma 1/2, Legend
of Arslan, Crying Freeman (three very different anime, but all made an
impression on me) and some others. Then I realized retrospectively
that all the stuff I'd watched as a kid was anime too.

My anime _obsession_ didn't really begin until a few years ago, when I
got sucked into Tenchi Muyo! (via Toonami) and then later there was a
fateful day when a friend of mine sent me an mpeg of the first episode
of a show called Revolutionary Girl Utena.... also around that time I
was in grad school hanging around with a LOT of people who were into
anime, so I got exposed to a lot over a short time period.

Recently I've inherited a friend's old anime VHS collection, including
a lot of older anime like Burn Up and Patlabor.... some aren't quite
my cup of tea but I'll have some fun catching up with some of the
"classics."

I saw Kimba the White Lion at Otakon last year. I thought it was
pretty hokey. ^^ It was the LA tv station version tho--apparently all
they could get their hands on.

Ryouga Hibiki from "Ranma 1/2". Also known as the "Lost Boy", because
he's got the world's worst sense of direction, and can't find his way
from or to anything. So he ends up in closets and such because he
thought it was the way out.

Hanazawa's too Hurt?

Rui Hanazawa is rather hurt and broody in "Hana Yori Dango". He's the
guy that the heroine has a crush on for a large part of the story.

Mikage: Oh, do join us, Snookums, please. *smirks at Touga* This will
be fun to watch.
DQ: *clears player throat* Undue player hostility!
Touga: *surprised* Thank you. *smarmy look at Mikage*
DQ: *catches look* That goes for you too! *sighs* Touga, this isn't a
competitive game. No one can lose. You can't win.
Touga: *confused* This is a _game_, right?
DQ: Yes. It's just a game where you're not competing against the other
players. They're... *searches for comparable word* They're all on your
team.
Touga: Then who is on the other team?
DQ: *thinks* I guess that would be me. I present the story to you,
which includes the challenges and puzzles, and you have to _work with
them_ to solve them.
Touga: Ah! So we're competing against you!
DQ: *sighs*
Mikage: Stop trying, Death Quaker, it's beyond his limited form of
comprehension.
Touga: *tosses hair* I thought we weren't supposed to insult one
another. We are on the same _team_ are we not?
DQ: Mikage, since you're here... *shows him Touga's character sheet*
Do you think this ability would fall under "Use Rope" or "Craft:
Leatherwork"?
Mikage: *eyes widen* People actually try to develop _skill_ in that?
Katherine: *peeking over their shoulders, cheeks reddening* Touga... I
told you I don't understand this stuff, but I'm pretty sure they're
not playing that sort of game. *pauses, slowly smiling* Now, if you
ever wanted to try some of..
Mikage: Snookums!
DQ: Forget it! Look, Kiryuu, you're not worming out of this, not if
you want me to keep the tiny scrap of respect I have for you--you are
at least a man who keeps his word, are you not?
Touga: *solemnly* Of course. A chivalrous man would do no less.
Mikage: *stifles a laugh*
DQ: Mikage! *hands on hips, in her firmest voice* You are going to
treat Touga with the respect a fellow party member deserves. Miki,
stop reading Touga's character sheet, your nose is going to start
bleeding. Katherine, I would be delighted if you joined us even as
just a spectator, but you of course can do as you please. Let's head
downstairs. I'm sure Utena and Anthy will be here soon anyway.
Touga: _Utena's_ playing?

((sorry I keep making these kinda long... *volleys the fic back before
she gets carried away*))

And my heart rate goes up as I struggle to stay within the realm of this

terrified and happy. ^_^

Katherine: Utena's playing? But . . . I thought cool people didn't game.
DQ: -_- Thanks.
Katherine: You know what I mean.
DQ: I do?
Touga: I'm thinking the same thing. If Utena's playing, maybe this gaming
thing can't be all that bad. *tosses back hair* Well, I'm sure she'll
appreciate my skills. Miki, give me my sheet. You, mushroom, rewrite these
for me.
Mikage: Exactly to whom are you speaking?
Katherine: Touga, I told you not to call him that. Especially when you
need his help.
Touga: Right. *winks* Please Mikage, I would appreciate your assistance.
Make sure I'm cool.
Miki: Aren't you already?
Touga: Well, yes. But in this gaming thing . . . Utena must find me
irresistible.
Katherine: Well, I can see I'm not wanted.
Touga: But, you're my Prince.
Mikage: *My* Prince.
Touga: Mm. Of course, that too. So, bay-bee, you can sit next to Utena
and signal me when I'm impressing her.
Katherine: How soon they forget . . .
Touga: *pulls her close, gives the full bishounen of your fantasies look,
softens & deepens voice* How could I forget you?
DQ: Great, she and Miki have both fainted. *kneels by Miki, lightly taps

Mikage: What have you done with my Snookums? *takes Katherine's limp form

Touga: Don't you know her name? It's D_Q_
DQ: "DM" stands for "Dungeon Master"--or I guess in my case Dungeon
Mistress. *blinks* _That's_ got all kindsa wrong connotations, doesn't

Touga: Are you sure my skill list was inappropriate? *smirk*
DQ: I don't want to think about this! Speaking of "dungeon" let's go

Touga: As you will. *smirk* Mistress.
DQ: *ignores him, patting Miki on the face* Come on, kiddo, let's go.
Miki: *blinks* What's going on?
DQ: *giving him a hand up* We're going downstairs. Mikage is the room

Mikage: *poring over Touga's sheet, making marks here and there* I
asked Mamiya to set it up before he left for the evening.
Touga: *raises eyebrow* Oh? Of course. And where did Mamiya go?
DQ: Shouldn't you be rousing Ka- er *quickly corrects her choice of
words* -just pick her up if she hasn't come to yet.
Mikage: Why didn't you ask me to?
*DQ and Touga both raise eyebrows*
DQ: No offense, Mikage, but you're just not as... athletic as Touga,
okay?
*Touga flexes, poses. Katherine, about to come to, faints again*
DQ: You're not helping!
Touga: Apologies. *smirk* Mistress.
DQ: That's it! *grumpily* I'm going to the elevator. Anyone who wants

Whoops! I missed this when I did my other reply.

*feels silly urge to try and explain RPGs again* Do you play Final
Fantasy (or just lust after Sephiroth ~_^)? It's sort of like that
except people are acting out the story bits, and the game master is
essentially the "computer."

Anyway, glad you're happy about the challenge--and don't be too
terrified. ^^

Just as a Game Master I expect the players to run off with the plot,
so here I'm expecting the characters to manipulate their way into
something completely unlike--and perhaps having nothing to do with--a
normal gaming session. ^^ (Of course I'm not sure there is any such
thing as a "normal" gaming session, but I digress...) So in other
words, the sky's the limit.

Roll with it (no pun intended) and have fun. I'm curious to see how
far this can go before one or both of us goes mad.

Oh. Too late. ^^

I wanted to add that _I'm_ very nervous because I am just jumping into
the AFU-d-fic-version of the Ohtoriverse... you folks do some
characterization I am not used to (and I have no idea if I can
characterize you/your avatar properly) so I am really playing it by
ear! I already know I'm writing some of the characters too stiffly or
too sillily (that is not a word but it should be)... but I'm hoping to
get the knack of it. Thanks for bearing with me!

Jump in, the water's fine. As to "us" - well, "I" tend to be a tad
clueless and a huge flirt - obviously - I adore Mikage but lust for Touga &
Akio. If you'll notice, Laurie's character is a lot more on the ball,
intelligent and stable. As "you" - well you just write "you" and we'll go
from there - again, I have no idea how to write "you" except as also being
someone who catches things and isn't charmed by Touga. Tho' I think I'm
giving you a darker wit than you prolly have. I think Laurie & I have set
it up that at least Mamiya's, er, other self is known to our characters and
Mamiya is aware that we know.

But - hell - run with it - it's writing practice - there's very few rules
outside of following the rough story set up - ie - we're in Nemuro Hall,
Saionji's naked and being tortured and I'm lovng it and suddenly Saio's in
the Kiryuu mansion being seduced by Nanami . . . hmmmmm . . . I like both
of those ideas . . .
Saionji: Do you mind?
Touga: Dude, touch my sister and you're dead.
Saionji: I didn't _touch_ your sister - she scares me!
Touga: What? My _little_ sister? She's an angel!
Katherine: *mutters* of death.
Saionji: I heard that!
Touga: What?
Saionji: Your sister's an angel of death.
Touga: That does it! In the dojo. Now. I'm going to kick your ass.
Saionji: I didnt' say it - _she_ did *points to Katherine*
Katherine: *big blue eyes at Touga* Would I ever say something so mean
about your little sister?
Saionji: Yes! You're the -
Touga: She's my Prince, you know.

Oh - there's more to it than lusting for Sephi? #^^# I've played/watched
the FF games but that's the closest I come to RPGs and even so - I only like

relative. ^^ I'm an old RPGer myself, but I'm thoroughly enjoying
watching this one develop under your able pens. I guess "me" and "my"

Please join in! I'm floundering with this one. You'll present a

looking good. But, then, Akio is free if Anthy's coming over w/ Utena

Katherine: You're so right Touga. *pouts* How could I ever do or
say anything that could upset you?
Touga: Exactly. So, old friend, despite what your Prince, er, *keeps
a wary eye on Laurie* mis-heard . . . I think you owe me an apology.
Saionji: *sputters, practically apoplectic*

We'll see, if I get any inspiration before you two hare off on strange
tangents again.

Laurie: That depends entirely on whether I "mis-heard" or not.
*rounding on Katherine* Did you, or did you not, mutter the phrase "of
death" right after Touga declared his sister to be an angel?
Saionji: Yeah, we both heard it!
Laurie: And if not, then just what did you say? Because you did say
_something_.

Licking Touga's chest seems quite normal for me.

But, truly, when there's more writers, who follow the story somewhat, it's
always more fun and challenging.

Katherine: *plays with buttons on Touga's jacket* Well, I might've. But
honestly Touga I meant she'd be the death of me if she ever caught us.
Right?
Touga: Well . . . That's true. Nanami can be a bit . . . possessive.
Saionji: That's _not_ what she meant! *faces Katherine* Tell the truth.
For once.
Katherine: I always do. Since I'm a Sagittarius, I'm just not very good at
expressing myself. And, truly, *adoring gaze at Touga* Touga _does_
fluster me. He's so brave and strong and good looking. *faces Saio* And
you're here, all angry and what not. Well, it's intimidating. *pouts at
Touga, flutters eyeslashes, sounds hurt* Truly Touga, your friend is scary
sometimes. And, yet he's here saying your little sister, who's at least a
foot shorter than you, is scary. How could he think that? Do you think
it's because he knows he can't hit her, like he hits Anthy? Do you think
because he's intimidated by her, he might want to hit her?
Touga: *glares at Saionji* You want to hurt my precious Nanami?

That's true. I'll have to review what you two have already done.

Saionji: No. I want her to leave me alone. Which she normally does,
and we're both happy. _You_ were the one who suggested otherwise, not
me!
Laurie: And notice who brought up hitting. Projection, anyone?
Touga: I suggested no such thing! I was warning that you better not.
Saionji: And I haven't. And I won't. And it was _her_ *points at
Katherine* who concocted that ridiculous scenario in the first place.
Touga: Ridiculous? That Nanami might want to seduce you?
Saionji: But I don't want--
Touga: Don't want her? How dare you insult my sister!

*nod* I've only played FFIX myself. FABULOUS story. Wonderful
animation. Decent soundtrack (for cheesy synthesizer music). Mediocre
game.

But it's a console RPG... and console and PCRPGs were once upon a time
based on/inspired by pen-and-paper ones... just there's less actual
"role-playing" and the GM can be pretty dumb sometimes. ^^

Laurie: Utena! Anthy! I'm not late, am I?
Utena: *laughs* You're never late. I've never seen you be anything

Anthy: I'm sure none of us are late.
Utena: You didn't bring Saionji, did you?
Laurie: Of course not. You know he doesn't like to game.
Utena: *hmph* He'll do anything to get near Anthy.
Laurie: Except this. For some reason the whole setting makes him
uncomfortable. So he's out doing other stuff tonight.
*Utena pulls open the heavy door for them*
Utena: Hey, where's our escort?
Laurie: Yes, usually Mikage is here to guide everyone downstairs.
Anthy: *peering down a side corridor* The elevator is going down.
They must have gone on ahead.
Utena: Oh, great. He better come back for us.
Anthy: I could guide us.
Utena: You could?
Laurie: Your cousin been showing you around?
Anthy: *mild smile* Yes, that's right.
Utena: *to Laurie* Are you okay with that?
Laurie: Perfectly. I'm sure that Anthy's learned these halls as well
as Mamiya has.
Utena: Then let's get this party started!

Looks good! I was hoping you'd join.

Quick "OOC" question, as it were--are you just joining the game or
have you been with the group for awhile? Just so the "DM" knows... I
have an idea of what Miki, Mikage, Utena, and Anthy are playing (if
you or Katherine don't bring in something first). (It's a fictional
game and I'm still worried about party balance... crazy poor obsessed
girl that I am... ^^)

I'm assuming I've been with the group for a while, but perhaps not from
the very beginning of the campaign. Since I know nothing about what
your game is about yet, I'm not clear which kind of character it would
be good for me to have. I hope you'll send along some suggestions,
off-group if you like.

My ISP has decided I don't see many posts (they've been telling me
I'll have full NG access any day now, for about 3 days), so . . . I
*have* to go thru Google for some threads . . . erg >_<

Laurie: So, you know which staircase will, erm, work?
Anthy: Of course Ms. Laurie. Now, let's take . . . this one.
Utena: Anthy, are you sure about this?
Anthy: Don't worry Miss Utena, we'll be just fine.
Utena: Hey, I think the elevator stopped. Maybe we can call it back
up.
Anthy: No need.
Utena: You're pretty sure about things, for only visiting on
occassion.
Anthy: *smile* Am I?
*noises from kitchen, they go there to see Katherine*
Laurie: Katherine? What are you doing here? Normally you're off
with... *looks at Utena* someone else, aren't you?
Anthy: Yes, what _are_ you doing here? *affects benign smile* Ms.
Katherine.
Katherine: Don't ask. As soon as the elevator stopped, I realized I
needed to make an escape.
Mikage's voice up back steps: Snookums! Is that your voice in the
kitchen? Please get some snacks! Mamiya made a tray of dumplings
with red bean paste. And I don't see them down here.
Anthy: *mutters* I said they were in the 'fridge.
Utena: Hm? Did you help out Anthy?
Anthy: Why, so I did. Help me Miss Utena?
Laurie: *sidles close to Katherine, whispers* So, why aren't you out
with Touga?
Katherine: Oh, you'll see why. *getting a bottle of rum and a
2-liter of cola* Ready?
Utena: Aren't you going to take down glasses?
Katherine: Why? This'll be easier. Take a swallow of rum, then
follow up with a swallow of cola. The pain will lessen quicker. And
if Laurie here will distract Mikage, I can attempt another getaway.
Mikage's voice: Snookums, aren't you coming down to be with me?
DQ's voice: Have you seen Utena, Anthy and Laurie yet?
Laurie: *calling down* We should be right there. I hope.
Utena: Hm?
Anthy *handing a tray to Utena*: It might be best to take the
elevator. They tend to leave us alone on Fridays.
Katherine: They can't take the gaggle of nerds either, huh? Even
with all the babes?
Laurie: Do you think they want to take on me, DQ, and Utena?
Katherine: Point. Well, lead on.

has a grid of 100x100 one inch squares, several dry erase pens, and
she has put several hand-painted miniature figurines onto the mat:
they include a sword-bearing woman in silvery-white plate armor with
pink and gold accents, a dark-haired man in chain mail wielding a
sword and shield with an image of a mechanical cog painted onto the
shield, a pale, elven male figure in dark blue robes carrying a staff,
and at last, a rather ugly, tall, brutish figure wearing skins and
wielding a rather large axe.*
DQ: *rooting through a small box lined with bubble wrap* Dammit,
where's Laurie's figure? Oh, Touga. *she looks up at him* You should
pick a figure to represent you in case we have to use the battle map.
*she drops a few figures onto the table* These should work for now. If
you keep playing I can custom paint you one.
Touga: *eyes the figures. They are all of long-haired foppish men
wielding swords and wearing cloaks [[[the only ones that really exist
IRL]]]. His eyes widen* Wait a minute, is that-
DQ: Wait, no, not that one!
Touga: *snatching up a figure: it is of a tiny man with long red hair,
white shirt, red trousers, wielding a sword. [[really exists; really
is supposed to look like "Medieval Touga"]] He grins* My, he looks
handsome. *smoothly* It's natural I would serve as an inspirat-
Mikage: *cutting him off* Death Quaker, isn't that the figure you used
to represent the _junior_, incompetent sorcerer we killed last
session?
DQ: *grins* Yes, yes it was.
Touga: *not about to lose his edge* Still, you painted a figure to
look like me. How interesting. *smirks*
DQ: *grumbles, turning away, muttering something about artistic
license and pulling out the last of her bag's contents, which are
several boxes of Pocky.* Touga, have you come up with a character name
yet?
Touga: What?
DQ: A character name. What is this name of your hiding,
low-hitpointed, but very very charming elven bard? And no, it can't be
'Touga.'
Touga: Oh. Well... what would impress Utena? Hey Kather- *looks
around* Where did she go?
Mikage: *looks around as well, suddenly looks very dejected* Snookums
left? *looks around some more* Snookums?
Touga: She can't leave me alone like this! With a bunch of...
DQ: *glares; it's obvious she's been around Jury quite a bit lately
and has been practicing. Touga quiets himself.*
Miki: I think Katherine went upstairs.
*a dual-snarl followed by several "eeps" echoes from the elevator
shaft*
DQ: *grins* Ah, it sounds like the party fighters have arrived.
Hopefully they'll bring Katherine down with'em.
Mikage and Touga: *simulataneously* Oh good.
DQ: *whispering to Miki* What are the odds she worms some way out of
this within the next hour?
Miki: *whispering back* I'm calculating the probablility as we speak.
Touga: What are you two talking about?
DQ: Erm.... I was asking Miki to lend you some of his dice?
Miki: My dice?
DQ: Well, you do have more than anyone. *points to a rather ginormous
leather bag sitting on top of Miki's character sheet*
Miki: I need them for statistical theories! *mutters* They just don't
act the way probability says they should... *frowns, nervously fidgets
with his stopwatch* five 1s on a d20 in a row is just wrong...
Touga: d20?
DQ: *picks up a round, many sided polyhedron* This. d20
-die-20--twenty sided die. Die as in singular form of "dice."
Touga: That's a die?
DQ: *smiles coldly at Mikage* And this is the person you gave enough
charisma-based skills to assume command as party leader.
Mikage: I did? *eyes widen* Damn...
Touga: *starts to smirk* I could be lead-
*a loud "ding" is heard and the elevator door opens. Katherine comes
out first with her rum and coke*
Touga: Hey, Katherine, what's a good name that will impress- *Utena
appears from behind Anthy and Laurie and their bags and coolers of
food* Utena! Utena, so wonderful to see you, as always. *smooth grin*
Utena: *surprised* Touga? What the heck are you doing here?
Laurie: *eyes Touga, then DQ*
Touga: *smiles* I'm here to lead the... ah, "adventuring party."

Katherine: *takes dies from Touga* So, if I kiss your dice, you'll win?
*flicks tongue over die*
Touga: Bay . . . *straightens as he notices Utena watching* Well, I don't
know . . .
Miki: *dabbing at nosebleed* It's not that sort of game Ms. Katherine. And
please don't get my die wet.
Katherine: So, Touga, you're the leader? Cool. Isn't that cool Utena?
*winks at Touga*
Utena: I'm not sure why _he's_ the leader?
Laurie: How did this come about anyway?
*DQ explains*
Laurie: So you were out foxed, eh?
Touga: *pouts* Well, I am chivalrous. I'll do anything for a girl. *winks
at DQ* Even be some sort of mini-idol *picks up figure*
Utena: Hey! That's wierd. *looks at DQ*
Touga: So, Utena *sidles close* What do you think would be a good name for
me?
Utena: How about baka?
Touga: You wound me. *charming pout*
Anthy: *mutters* If only . . .
Katherine: *sits next to Miki and dumps bag open* Oooh, pretty dice. But
they're like nerd dice with all these extra sides and stuff.
Miki: *trying to be polite as he takes up his dice* Ms. Katherine, if you
would just . . . *sigh* Why did you bring alcohol?
Katherine: Ah, if you were only a little older.
Touga: I'll have some. What about you my lovely Utena?
Anthy: I'd like to try some of Ms. Katherine's drink, Miss Utena.
Utena: Anthy!
Katherine: *mumbles* I knew some one had been into my rum. *meets Anthy
benign smile* Guess I'll get glasses.
DQ: Well, this'll be an interesting evening . . .
Mikage: My Snookums always can liven up any night.
Touga: So, *flicking at game pieces* Who's who out of all these little
toys?

*Laurie, Utena and Anthy take seats at the table and begin unpacking
their book bags.*
Chuchu: Chuuu! *popping up out of Anthy's bag, scattering her dice
over the table and the floor*
Utena: I wondered why I didn't see him when we left. I should have
known.
Anthy: *setting Chuchu aside and gathering up her dice* Now I'm
missing my glittery blues.
Utena: *roots about on floor* They're here. *Stands up with the dice
and a figurine* Laurie, this is yours, isn't it?
Laurie: Yes, thank you. Here it is, DQ. *Places the figurine, a woman
with long strawberry-blonde hair, wearing a cloak and wielding a sword,
on the mat with the others*
Touga: So I know which one you are now. *looks at the red-headed
figure he selected, looks at those standing on the mat* Mine is the
only one that looks like its player, and I only picked it out tonight.
Laurie: There's no restriction that says characters look like their
players. I did that with my very first RPG character when I started,
but haven't done it since. Most other people don't either. And since
the figurines, despite Death Quaker's excellent painting, often can't
resemble the player's image, I provide portraits. *pulls a sheet of
paper from a folder. It's a close-up color drawing of a woman with gray
eyes and strawberry-blonde hair. Unlike the figurine, the woman's hair
in the drawing is bound back into a thick braid, and she wears a leather
headband.*
Touga: I see. No, she doesn't look like you at all. *sultry gaze*
But she looks like someone I'd like to know better.
Laurie: *flat stare* If you know what's good for you, you're just
practicing your role-playing.
Touga: *chuckle* Of course I am. So do I get a portrait too?
Laurie: Only if you decide that your character doesn't look like you.
A big reason I bother with the portraits is so we each can have a very
solid idea of what the other characters look like. It aids role-playing
and understanding the interpersinal dynamics.
Touga: I don't know then. *flips hair back* My looks are, after all,
already perfect.

A few "OOC" comments as it were:

1) I am now going to call my gaming dice my "nerd dice." ^^

2) I wonder if Anthy names each of her dice like she does her snails?

DQ: *groans, sets up her DM Screen (a 5-paneled piece of cardboard
about 6 inches high, obscuring her notes behind it), then reaches into
her bag again, pulling out a small bottle labeled "DeKuyper Butter
Schnapps." She looks very coolly, firmly at all assembled, tapping at
the bottle* MINE. *sits the bottle behind the DM screen.* I don't
think we're going to get through this session without Mr. Trottey.
Everyone: *stares blankly at DQ*
DQ: Never mind. ANYWAY. Touga. You. Character Name. Now. Or I'm
randomly generating. Five seconds.
Touga: But...
DQ: Five... four... three... *begins rolling dice*
Touga: Um, but what's a...
DQ: Two... one. *looks at the dice and a small booklet.* Your
character's name is Dagmar Reinhagen.
Touga: Dagmar Reinhagen? How can I possibly be sexy with a name like
Reinhagen?
DQ: *smiles over-sweetly* If anyone can manage it, I'm sure it's you.
Touga: Oh. Well, *smooth grin* that's true.
DQ: Now. *pouring butter schnapps into a 20 oz bottle of coke; several
people shudder at the idea of the ridiculous sweetness of the
concoction* One more thing. Touga, your character needs an alignment.
Utena: How about 'Neutral Me'?
*a few people snicker*
Touga: What do you mean?
DQ: *shakes head* Never mind. How about just "neutral"? That will be
easy for him to play.
Mikage: I liked Utena's better.
Touga: *picking up the brutish axe-wielding figure* Is this one you,
Mikage? It looks like it's lived among the mushrooms for awhile.
Mikage: *picking up the elven wizard from where ChuChu scattered it;
coolly* No, this one's mine, the elven wizard Morchaint the
Transmuter.
Anthy: *points at the figure in of Touga's hand* That one's mine. His
name is Thag. He's a half-orc barbarian. ^^

Isn't that what they're 'posed to be called? That's all I've ever called
them, when I go into the nerd stores. Why the nerd stores have to be the
only ones that carry anime . . . *sigh*

That's a scary thought.

Touga: Well, that was just gibberish. *tosses back hair* But, Utena, if
your friend wants to be this . . . thing, why I thing that's wonderful.
*smiles charmingly* And mushroom boy, you're what now? Morty the
Transmitter?
*ghostly snicker*
Laurie: Did I hear something?
*ghostly eep*
Mikage: Better than neutral.
DQ: Did I, or did I not, warn both of you earlier?
Mikage: Fine.
Touga: Fine.
Laurie: Wow. You'll have to tell me how you did that.
Touga: Well, I am a fair man and I am never underhanded.
Utena: *snorts* Like what happened in the greenhouse?
Touga: That was different. *charming bishounen look & soft bishounen
voice* You confuse my heart so, you know.
Miki: I need another hanky.
Mikage: Is it that dry in here? I'll have Mamiya set up a humidifier.
Anthy: *benign smile* I'll bet Ms. Katherine would love to do that for you
Mr. Mikage. I'm sure it would please her to do whatever you'd like.
Mikage: You think so?
Touga: *snort* Just tell him you don't want to set it up.
Laurie: Not that again. So, are we ready?
Mikage: As soon as my Snookums returns. I know she'll love watching me.
*silence, finally Katherine returns with a tray of glasses*
Katherine: Sorry, had to, um, check the wine, make sure it was still good.
Anthy: But you have rum here . . .
Katherine: So, drinks? Touga, did you get a name?
Miki: *snicker*
Katherine: Mic-key, are you being mean?
Miki: No ma'am!
Touga: I'm called Neutral.
Katherine: What the hell does that mean? What is everyone called?
Touga: Mushroom's called Marsha the Transmorgifier.
Mikage: *glare*
