What are you interested in? Newsgroups are heavily topical. This isn't
reddit where there are 3000 subreddits dedicated to general stupidity.
This is usenet where there are 934509834598 newsgroups dedicated to
specific stupidity. j/k

One newsgroup that I am pleasantly surprised with is
rec.arts.books.tolkien. It doesn't get a whole lot of traffic, but there
are several people monitoring it and enjoy talking about LoTR.

Hello! Just saw this group mentioned on reddit. Kind of looking forward
to posting to a discussion group on usenet although, frankly, right now
I have nothting substantial to say. :D

comp.misc has a decent and steady amount of traffic. I beleive most of
the current regular posters there came in from an organized effort on
slashdot a few years ago. I think the mood at the time was frustration
with web based forums and a sort of "back to nature" push to take
things back to usenet.
