What's the story behind the video for Sweetest Thing? Saw it on MTV,
and it's like the whole thing is an apology to someone... banners going
by saying I'm sorry (one on an elephant!), Bono looking shameful a lot
of the time, and at the end the guys put a halo over his head. Don't
get me wrong, I like it! Very amusing! But who's it for? (maybe no
one, maybe I am thinking too much)

Oh, just saw something on
http://student-kmt.hku.nl/~allard/sweetest.html
about Bono forgetting Ali's Birthday. Yikes!

Could be, but maybe there is another reason: During the Mexicoconcert he
dedicated One to Micheal Hutchence. He said: ,,I'm sorry... I'm sorry, for
Micheal Hutchence.'' In the Sweetest Thing-video there is a marching fanfare
which wearing the same clothes as the boys on an albumcover of INXS; there
is a group which is play the violins like in a INXS-video.
Maybe this is only a coincidence, but who knows...

The marching band in the video are the Irish Boys Band of which Larry used
to drum in so I think that it is a coincidence that INXS used them on the
album cover "Welcome to wherever you are" (or whatever it was called. I
heard on MTV that Bono was saying sorry to Ali for forggetting their wedding
anniversary. But who knows...?

Alex.

Hey thanks for the hint but an ANSWER would be more helpful. I don't
have time to sit around and watch videos all day to see the beginning.
I have to go to *work* and *school* and stuff. So whenever I catch it
is when I am flipping channels, and it is already halfway through. So
enlighten me, would ya?

Hi Allison,

I believe Bono is saying sorry to Ali, his wife. He missed her birthday
once, and wrote her the song to say sorry. And Bono is saying sorry to,
*possibly*, Michael Huctense, saying sorry alot like at the Mexico POPMART.
I also think that the band they used in the video are dressed up like the
members of INXS were on one of their album covers. Hope that helps...

most times I've seen the video they cut off the beginning because it's too
long, so you don't see Ali

Bono is apolgizing to Ali. If you see the begining of the video, you see her
kinda disgruntled as she sits down in the horse drawn carriage. Throughout the
video you see banners that say I'm sorry..I'm Really Sorry..I'm really really
sorry.. and so on. Also, one of Ali's favorite groups, Boyzone, is also in the
video doing that "whooa the sweetest thing" chorus. If you actually want to
take the word of the newspaper, I think it was the Union-Tribune (san diego)
that said it was made for Ali, and she requested some of the stuff you see in
it. I hope this helps to answer some questions

Too long at exactly 3 minutes? They're just sods, that's all. It's nothing to
do with length.

Aha, thank you for confirming what I thought. When I saw that band in their
uniforms, I wondered if it was the same band that INXS had pictured on their
Welcome To Wherever You Are album.

This is quoted from the ET interview at:

http://www.etonline.com/html/Interviews/2404.3.html

Except they think Ali is his daughter! Doh!

Bono is sorry for missing Ali's birhday party in 1989. He wrote the song
as an apology to her. It is not an apologetic song but the theme comes
through very well in the video.

If he wrote the song as an apology for missing a 1989 birthday...

Then why was it originally on a 1987 single (Where the Streets Have No
Name)???

Hmmmmmmmmmmmmm?
