I have read 2 John Saul novels one in the 80s and a 2000 novel called
The Right Hand of Evil. Both novels were lousy. i wrote why TRHOL was
lousy in another thread. But i considered after i wrote the post that i
may have misjudged him. He isn't a best selling author for nothing. So
has he written good novels and i jut picked two lousy ones? The 80s
novel i believe was called The God Project.

I could never understand Saul's success. I read some of his stuff twenty or
so years ago (something like "Suffer the Children" and such subsequent ilk)
and when you compare him to early King/Herbert, Barker's "Damnation Game",
most of Ramsey Campbell's works, Ellison's "American Psycho" and the guts of
Jonathan Ayecliffe's ouvre, he pales by comparison. <Phew! That was a
mouthful -gasp!->

But, compared to the likes of Richard Laymon....<shakes his head at the
later> ... he's very literate, if a bit long winded. Mediocre, by long past
experiences, to say the least.

John.

God, I read that...it was one of those books my sister had lying around when I
was in high school.

And no, to answer the titular question.

His earlier novels are much better. They are also more disturbing in
context as well.
Try:
Punish The Sinners
Suffer The Children
When the Wind Blows.

I know nothing about John Saul except by reputation. Why don't you read a
third and see if the trend continues?

From Amazon:

_Nathaniel_ by John Saul -

"For 100 years, the people of Prairie Bend have whispered Nathaniel's
name in wonder and fear. Some say he is a folktale, created to frighten
children on cold winter nights."

Around Helsingor, they had the same problem with some SOB named Grendel
in years past.

Didn't he write Ghost Story? If so, I liked that one. But I would
definitely agree that he is long-winded.

That was written by Peter Straub.

So I'm not the only one puzzled by Saul's success.

I actually loved one of his later books entitled "Black Creek Crossing". If you're looking for innovation, then the horror genre is not the place to look. However, Saul weaves a terrifying story in this particular novel. I also enjoyed "In the Dark of the Night" which is a far more creative exploration of possessed relics from America's most famed serial killers. I can't guarantee you will enjoy these titles but if I remember correctly, they're much better than the two you have listed.
