Having recently finished the said novel by Tom Robbins, I felt distinctly
sick. Not that I didn't love _Half Asleep In Frog Pajamas_ and _Even
Cowgirls Get the Blues_, the only two of his novels i have previously read,
not that I didn't chew the cud of his meta-philosophical smorgasboard, and
not that the coloquial style didn't impress and wear off on me, but the book
still seemed ultimately.... mangled. Mutilated.
Any similar sentiments? I mean, i'm not going to argue about whether the
book was "good" or "bad", so no one needs to defend on the rational (3rd)
circuit what is probably buried a little deeper down and therefore doesn't
listen to its superego, but i really would like any comments about emotional
responses evoked by this and his other books, maybe a compare and contrast?

peace, love, and light.

What can I say, SLw/W is my favorite Robbins novel ..The concept of choice
still
rings in my cauliflower(s) every day.

I do actually like "Still Life..." better than "Half Asleep..." -- but I
couldn't tell you why. Sorry, I guess that wasn't much of an insight. Oh,
well...

And the new book kicks ass:)

Read "Skinny Legs and All" and tell me if you still feel the same way
about "Still Life."

An aside, who liked "Even Cowgirls" the movie, and who didn't?

Insanely curious,

ps: Oh yeah, one final thing. Does anyone out there happen to remember
which one of the Wilson webpages had the goddess eros embedded in
ascii in the source behind the page?

I had it bookmarked for a couple years and now that I wanted to show
someone I can't find it.
Aargh!

Skinny Legs and All is much better. Although some of the early Can o Beans
scenes do tend to drag on a bit.
I'd have to see the "Cowsgirls" movie again. But I don't remember hating it or
anything. I think Uma was perfect for the part.

Is the movie by the same name as the book? What year did it come out? Does
anyone know the chronological order of Robbins' books, and can one see his
development through them?

Oh... and i think the reason why i felt sick with _still life with
woodpecker_ was the abortion stacked upon the miscarriage stacked upon the
deafness. Kind of a lack of respect for the body, not so much for creating
it in a novel but for not bringing closure to it like in the _cowgirls_ and
_frog pajamas_ (at least in my opinion...)

Still Life was the first novel of TR's that I read, and reread, but I must
say my favorite TR novel has to be Skinny Legs and All.

While I could appreciate the wit and cynicism applied to American families
(I grew up in an upper class family with a red headed younger
sister/princess), I think Skinny Legs... really spoke to my spiritual side.

I guess that's why we all like different things for different people. Still
Life With Woodpecker was very enjoyable, but I think my spirit was yearning
for a novel like Skinny Legs and All.
