What can I say Ben. I first read Still Life in 1980 when it first appeared
in the UK and it still ranks as one of my favorites of all time. As TR
himself has said, it is the simplest of all his books but is absolutely
exquisite for all that. What Mr Robbins is capable of doing, a rare gift
indeed (Marge Piercy can do it as well!), is to make you fall in love with
the characters so that they become a part of your life. All I'm prepared to
say for now is that I'm couldn't do better than the blurb of the paperback
edition which says if my memory serves me right, "A sort of love story
which takes place inside a packet of Camel cigarettes. " It also reveals
the "purpose of the moon" and illuminates a very puzzling children's bedtime
story.

I envy you. I wish I had never read it (or any of the Robbins oeuvre)
because then I'd be reading them now instead of re-reading them.

Have fun
Richard

Sure thing...it's a love story that takes place entirely inside of a packet
of Camel cigarettes. Oh, and the usual fun with explosives, redheads,
pyramids, Arabs...ya know, the usual.

It's about the Carter years, pre- Iran hostage crisis. Ralph Nader,
Twinkies, redheads, outlaws, how to MAKE LOVE STAY (inspired Dan
Fogelberg to write a big hit single), people who dress in black, space
aliens, just like any other seventies novel. All inside a pack of Camel
regulars.
