Perhaps he just couldn't count very well? :-)

Or maybe Bilbo heard him wrong and what he
said was that he needed to get his teeth fixed.

After consulting Gollum's extensive dental records I can assure that he
sucked the finger off.
Hmm... When 900 years old you reach, look so good you not.

incisors and canines are useful but not critical
to chew you need opposing molars on at least one side
maybe all four wisdom teeth and two canines
(wisdom teeth cut late to replace molars rotted away in adulthood)
Does this mean Gollum was from West Virginia? He might have too many teeth for
that state, but it was either that or Arkansas
Perhaps Gollum had six teeth in his Collection of Precious Things, but a
full complement in his mouth? Gold teeth, forged by the Dark Lord Sauron's
dentist, inscribed in the Black Speech, giving Sauron the power to dominate
hard-to-eat foods like apples and corn-on-the-cob.

he was a bit of a gum boy??

The most baffling thing is that accoding to Tolkien, those six teeth were
gleaming *white*.

I suppose we can rule out caries or old age as a reason why Gollum had
only six teeth. In this case, the remaining teeth would also have been
affected and would have broken off on Frodo's finger.
I suppose the Ring caused physical changes to Gollum. Remember, it
made his eyes glow in the dark. So I think there may have been more
changes to improve his hunting abilities.
Orcs have fangs, so I think fangs are necessary for "evil" creatures.
Four of Gollums teeths were probably canines. To bite fingers off,
incisors are the best choose. Perhaps the Ring had caused a growth in
parodontium, thus melting his incisiors into two "mega-incisors".
Four plus two = six. What about chewing? No teeth left for molars. I
suppose they fell off and were replaced by an extremely hardened
palate which served the same purpose. Not a very elegant explanation,
but it works.

Of course, we have to remember that JRRT was not a dentist, but a linquist.
He wasn't an architect, a military officer, an economist, or a farmer,
either.

Well actually he was a military officer.

Oops, so he was. My memory eluded me, once more.

So we can trust his statement that Gollum's tongue was long and grey?

This is why we fans today, with all of our puny knowledge, have to
explain problems like this :-)
