The truth is, the Mount Doom lava consisted entirely of molten osmium,
with a density of 22.57. Hence the ring correctly floated. One of the
few things where Jackson was *forced* to be truthful - in fact, he
*wanted* to heretically alter physics by making the ring sink quicker,
to save another 3 seconds for his battle scenes! So he ordered a
rather fat camera assistant to sit on the ring and push it down. But
the assistant burned his butt and threatened to sue Jackson, so there
was no other choice to just watch physics take its course.
Now you ask what happened to Gollum. The truth is, Gollum was entirely
made of CGI. Because CGI is just a cloud of swirling computer bytes,
it does not have mass and can pass through matter. So Gollum didn't
"sink" in the lava. He simply fell through.
