I am now currently designing a palantir. I need to know what you
preconceptions are. Is it clear glass or milky, or.. what? Is there any
color? How big is it? 100, 200, 300 mm?

I found a stone I'd like. It is clear crystal and measures about 110 mm.
This is not small.. but much smaller than a bowling ball.

Also, do you think each palantir came with a stand with a motif? I am
having many problems finding a nice stand. I did see a nice bronze one
yesterday made up of three elephants (oliphants) rearing up and suspending
it on their trunks. Wasn't too bad. But it was built for a 80 mm ball. I
don't think the bronze could have handled a 110 mm ball.

Let me know your opinions.

Well, There were 7 Palantirs in all, maybe you can distinguish them by
different stands? or make a stand that creates like a flickering light
in the center of the globe. JRRT didn't really make them any specific
size, but they couldn't be that big if Pippin was able to filtch it from
Gandalf, I think the size you have is good. The problem is, when the
stones are not in use they appear dark like jet and then they start
glowing, when you scrye or look in them. The LotR111 cartoon ( from the
same guys that did "THE HOBBIT" ) showed the Palantir black, like onyx.
I hope this is of help to you.

Its too involved for me to go into here, but I've written a short essay on
all the palantir before and there is quite a bit of descriptive stuff here
and there. You'd do good to find a copy off Unfinished Tales and check out
the Palantiri chapter. There's not one set description for the
Palantiri...each has its own properties (sizes, weights, and such). There
is info spread throughout parts of the books, but I'd say Unfinished Tales
would give you a pretty good idea of what direction to go in.

"The 'lore of the Stones' is now forgotten, and can only be partly
recovered by conjecture and from things recorded about them. They were
perfect spheres, appearing when at rest to be made of solid glass or
crystal deep black in hue. At smallest they were about a foot [i.e., about
300 mm] in diameter, but some, certainly the Stones of Osgiliath and Amon
Sūl, were much larger and could not be lifted by one man. Originally they
were placed in sites suitable to their sizes and intended uses, standing on
low round tables of black marble in a central cup or depression, in which
they could at need be revolved by hand."

The best description of the palantir "stand" is in *Unfinished Tales*.
The thing to bear in mind is that they have to be oriented for viewing.
The stand might be onyx or ebony, not too shiny, with compass-like
markings. If you *really* want to go to town, I can envision this stand
in the midst of a larger stand with tiny sculpted "scenes" at the
cardinal points. The "palantir" would be frosted except for two small
clear areas. The lucky owner would look into one clear area, through
the stone, and out the other clear area, seeing the itty-bitty scene
(Feanor forging the palantiri, for example) as if it was in the stone
itself....

(Hey, are these things for sale?)
