In Lost Tales 1, in the Index in the back it says:
Kosomot Son of Melko(= Gothmog Lord of Balrogs) 98
Annd on pg 98 it says:
"...and that Melko has a son('by Ulbandi') called Kosomot: this, it will emerge
later, was Gothmog Lord of Balrogs, whom Ecthelion slew in Gondolin."
Namarie,
Mithrandir
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Many are my names in many countries. Mithrandir among the Elves, Tharkun to
the Dwarves; Olorin I was in my youth in the West that is forgotten, in the
South Incanus, in the North Gandalf; to the East I go not.
No: it says '500 times have the leaves of Mirkwood fallen since then(ie the
building of the Golden Hall) ;yet but a little while it seems to us'
I'm quoting from memory too but it's followed by Aragorn saying something
like 'yet to the Rohirrim it seems so long that it is lost in the mythical
past' - interesting comparison of human & elvish perspectives.
I think the quote also clears up some pts on another thread re what was Legolas
doing for the whole of the 1st age (or whenever he was born & if anyone knows
please post). The pt is that no elf need have done anything in particular: eg
the Avari were born by Cuivienen and spent millenia simply wandering about
Middle Earth minding their own business while wars of the world were fought
and re-fought elsewhere.
Was Thranduil a Sindar ,a green elf , one of Lenwe's followers or what?

This is interesting to compare with later works as it has a whole different
conception. Although Morgoth does entertain wicked thoughts wrt Luthien
when she dances before his throne. It raises possibilities!
